Re:cube planets?

While it's true that cubic planets do not (as far as we know) occur naturally in our universe, nobody said these cubic planets formed naturally either. Perhaps the planet was devastated in the ancient past by a war that blew off large chunks of its crust. Or it was deliberately reshaped by an ancient race bent on bringing the universe to mathematical perfection. Or perhaps your local Bard empire decided to reshape the planet after one of their empire-wide keggers. Or maybe it was an experiment in creating artificial planets-to-order. Regardless of the reason, it's very possible to have cubic planets in this universe, even if naturally-created ones are impossible.

And the shape would have no effect on the planet's orbit, since at those distances and with the friction from cosmic particles being negligible, it's pretty much going to act as a point mass no matter what shape it is. The only real problem with living on a cube is, since gravity will still pull to the centre and not the surface normal, the entire landmass is covered with eight massive mountains, meaning a great variance in the thickness of the atmosphere.

It doesn't change the current (art) style of the game, nor does it add or subtract realism from the game. It just stays where it's always been on the realistic scale, since the release.

'cause really, are they that much worse from the storybook planets?

Maybe it's just a confirmation that the game isn't as scientific as you wanted it to be or as Maxis claimed it to be, but it's not "another step in the wrong direction". I could give hang all about style. I care about gameplay. The current gameplay is a dress-em-up, not anything emergent about the rules at all. That's what I care about. They see the market as being about making pretty things, as if that's what made SimCity or the Sims that interesting in the first place. If the Sims was simply about dress up dolls following scripts, it would not have been interesting. It was about making that Kirk and Spock, winding them up, and seeing if they did follow the slash fanfic, or became ruthless enemies who depressed each other into eventual death.

All of my creatures are, right now, exactly the same as yours with how they play in-game.

Is it that clear to you? It's indicative to me of what direction Spore is going. Not towards an emergent-ruleset interesting interactive experience, but as a supply of window dressing for a glorified curio cabinet.

And we all know how much fun Hummels are to play with.
It's just a planet shape.

But that's just the way I look at it.
The point is the planet won't play any different than any others. It won't /act/ like a truly square planet, with the interesting physics that it might entail (essentially a sphere with eight really really tall mountains). If you were on the tip of one, by rights in physics you should be able to jump a lot farther, or possibly suffocate if the mountain pokes up through the atmosphere. If you drop water on them, it should stay in a sphere rather than go cubic...

But I doubt any of that interesting stuff will happen. It is there purely for looks, and won't add to gameplay interest. Like all of the new parts in the parts-pack.
Portal guns violate conservation of energy, conservation of linear momentum, and relativistic mechanics.

By your eyes, gritmonger, portal is a horrendous game.
Okay, I will argue with some over the square planets, but this is inflammatory, and not at all what I am about. You do not know me, my arguments on this board, or anything else about what I stand for.

Portal is /interesting gameplay/. The point in that is taking something simple and applying an emergent ruleset (a set of simple behaviors that interact in a complex way). Portal, aside from the portals themselves, behaves in a physics and self-consistent fashion, but otherwise is unbounded, which makes it fun to play with. It is a twist on the real world, which makes it inherently interesting to experiment with.

Really, I'm in agreement with others that you exist on this board to make snide commentary.

And it's something that, had I known it was coming, would have warned me off from expecting much out of Spore.

I'm dogpiled now by people who, I can only assume, really like the idea of a cube planet, and take my criticism as somehow a personal attack.

As much as you don't care about my arguments, I actually care about yours.

I'm hoping Spore can be more than it is right now.
Cube planets, huh? Reminds me of The Cyberiad by Stanislaw Lem. Which is, of course, very serious science fiction, and not at all about rainbows and crystal magic... As I recall, the point of the cube planet in the Cyberiad was that it made no rational sense, and therefore was a sign that the civilization with the highest possible level of development lived there (It had "HPLD" written on it, for redundancy).

I wouldn't mind cube planets if they were storybook-world rare. It'd even make sense if the Grox homeworld were a cube.

Re:cube planets?

okay heres my view, something should be done about gas giants like an upgrade that lets you go onto one, more fun planets like a planet made out of sweets and baten berg the planets around SOL should be enlarged and made more realistic cos earth sucks at spore scale and there should be a teleport thingy that you can put on your planets so you dont have to trail around the universe jumping into random wormholes to get to your colony thats on the other side of the galaxy aside from all that cube planets would be nice if they were more common.

Re:cube planets?

I don't mind cube planets I would like a companion cube planet. At any rate though I do prefer if they would just fix the problems with the game. I cannot edit planets never could the planets always reset the second I leave its orbit. So if they are a cube, a ring world ,a hoop world diamond world whatever I can not edit it.

But I do not care about a cube planet being in the game. I ahve never seen one in game but I have screenshots of some in spore. I have a enat looking one that is a lava cube planet. It has circles of lava on the sides of the cube planet it looks pretty neat.
