Petition: EA and Maxis need to remove the limition on the number of "Total" installations.

Remember that this is not about [b]concurrent[/b] installations on multiple computers all being actively usable at the same time, but [b]Total[/b] installations. Meaning that if you upgrade your hardware, or reinstall the game four years later, you're using up one of those installations, and you can't get it back without jumping through potentially expensive or time consuming hoops with no real guarantee of success, at EA's discretion.

Chances are, a lot of you are probably on your second installation and you don't even know it yet. All it takes is a firmware upgrade, or a change in hardware.

Dear Maxis, and Electronic Arts

It is painfully apparent to all of us that you have not learned your lesson from the fiasco regarding Bioware's release of Mass Effect on the Personal Computer; there are countless personal accounts of people who have reached their final installation and are receiving an error message, such as the following:

We may, or may not be at this point of no-return, but we understand that with only three guaranteed installations, this is a looming problem that needs to be addressed for all of us.

Take into consideration the massive oversight that your company has neglected to fix, despite promises of both, two extra installations on top of our current three, and a de-activation tool, leaving us: The legitimate consumer of your fine products, out in the dark. Why are the pirates - who stole your game, allowed to play your game, but we - who paid $60-$80 USD for your game are not? The very people you attempt to prevent from playing your game have more freedoms than we do.

This has to stop. To force your consumer to re-buy a game license we've already paid for merely because of common, simple, every-day computer procedures is ludicrous. Simple procedures such as:

- Hardware upgrades.
- Reformatting a hard-drive for whatever reason we decide upon.
- Firmware upgrades.

Understand that your experiment with SecuROM has failed. We're tired of being treated like criminals, and being forced to jump through potentially [b]expensive[/b] [i](long distance phone calls to a customer support line in texas)[/i] and [b]time consuming[/b] [i](Unresponsive and often automated online customer support)[/i] hoops for the sake of remaining legitimate customers to your company.

Do the right thing - remove SecuROM, or at the very least the limitation on the Total Installations by giving us an easy to use de-activation tool that requires no jumping through hoops on the part of the consumer. Allow us to install at our discretion at our whim. It's what we paid for. It's what we deserve as customers.

Stop making it hard to be a loyal customer to Electronic Arts, and Maxis.

Well, I dunno if I sign or not. Don't get me wrong, I see your point. It would stink if for some reason you have to uninstall it and install it again, but I do kinda see their point too. They don't want someone buying the game and going and putting on like 20 of their friend's computers because that would be 19 less sales they would make and I'm sure a game like this cost them a good amount of money to make.

As soon as they allow the de-authorization of computers, this will all be moot. Unless you REALLY need to have it installed on 5+ computers at once.

I still think the only thing they should have done is required online authentication, and that's it. Then they can monitor key usage and once a key is being used an exorbitant amount, it can be disabled for future installs. This prevents software sharing, and is not a burden to legitimate customers.

I own 9 computers now - counting the ones I have built for other family members in the same house.

If I use a copy on my main machine - that's one install. If I used a copy on my laptop - that's two installs because I have two ways of using the internet.

That leaves me with none.

Add two more, it means I can let my brother play it and also my cousin. That's two more.

What about the rest of the family? Do I really think after paying 80 dollars I should have to pay 50 for the regular edition just so they can play? What the hell do they think I make a week?

So - nuh uh. No way.

Just because I've given up 90% of my hope on this game being good, doesn't mean I will back down. It's principal I stand for now. If you start to compromise your principals over a game - you should not vote in an election, run for office, or drive a car.

Edit: How do I get 9 working computers for under 400 dollars? I actually have 12 if you count every single one. The laptop is the only one I paid a lot for, and I saved for a year to do it. The others are built from scraps. You'd be surprised how many computers end up in the trash from a bad hard drive or a bad sound card. That's actually how I got a 3.2ghz P4.

Well, it's ok if they check if a key is beeing used twice or more at the same time, banning both users for lets say an hour. They just have to make sure that a key generator has no sense. Maybe by refreshing keys from time to time.

Funny you should mention, I thought Warhammer Online looked like a cool game, till I found out it had EAs name on it. Guess I'll never know.

IMHO, if it can't activate online, it should be able to play with the Spore CD.

Also if you login with a valid user name, you should be able to play regaurdless if the install is activated.

Without online access, the game is not much more than a cruel demo.

I'd have been happier with leaving the disk in the tray, as annoying as that is. This lifetime installation limit has to go. I routinely re-install old games. If they all did this, I'd quit gaming.

A few weeks ago, I wouldn't have signed. But lately I've been hearing too many stories about how the slightest change can actually eat up an installation. If they can't find some better way of doing this then they should just ditch the install limit altogether.

Plus I play games mostly on laptops now. Most of the time if one thing breaks the whole thing has to be replaced/repaired. The install limit is sure to blow up in my face sooner or later.

Signed to the OP! And QFT the above- I've been waiting a long time for Warhammer to come out. Unfortunately EA so SPORED the pooch on Spore's DRM it turned me away from buying any PC game with an EA logo. (Although, based on a lot of reviews I've read, I'm not missing much in WAR.)

Before I forget... I do not agree the petition therefor I do not sign... BECAUSE... I dont want them to remove the limitation, I want them to remove SecROM... Thats a complete other thing... SecROM doesnt do any good for the customers, EA or Maxis at all... Hell, the game is the most pirated game ever. EA already lose its face, would be better to kneel before the paying customers and give them what they want... That would boost EAs reputation a bit... And everybody got a green "++" flying on top of thier heads... Simple.

Disk in CD-Drive would be good enough for me... playing without a disk is not such a big advantage, if you cannot install it on more then one computer because this would use up one of the installs, which you will need when you reinstall your computer or upgrade the hardware...

You know, I wasn't going to respond, but the OP letter is very well written.

I understand that buying a game means I can install it on ONE PC at a time. Just because I own multiple PCs and purchase software does not mean that I am justified to install that purchased software on every machine that I own. So to the poster with the 9 PCs plus laptops... yes, EA is trying to stop YOU. And they are justified in doing that.

HOWEVER...

The limit on total installs without the option to de-install is not right. I remember an EA product from about 5 years ago which had 2 licences, but you could un-install a licence to get one back. I don't know why that technology can't be used.

To say it is to stop pirates is rediculous since pirates seem to be able to circumvent whatever copy protection is used.

So the real target of this is the average user.

My beef with this is that people who have to format a hard drive, upgrade their machine and so on will be "using up" installations. If the intention was for this to be something people will play for years (like The Sims) then that won't be possible for many consumers.

There really needs to be a better alternative to this as far as copy protection goes.

Install it in 100 PCs if you want to, but you can only play with 1 PC at the same time... Since you have to be online to have the full spore experience, it's not a big problem to do a cd-key check every 10 minutes or 15 and evertime you log on. And on match instantly kick both users...

Maybe EA don't understand their own games, but let's be clear - SPORE IS AN ONLINE GAME.

Yes, it's single player, but without its sharing feature, the game is a shell. It's the same way starcraft works -- you may like the campaign, but you keep playing for battlenet. To play on battlenet, you need an unique cd-key, and that's why starcraft sold so well. Since we already have a cdkey verification system already, the problem of illegal copies are solved. Anyone who really gonna play SPORE[u] will buy their own copy[/u], just so they can use the online features.

SecuRom is REDUNDANT and bug-ridden software. I know, because I have seen at least a dozen thread a week in Help Forum pleading for help, because SecuRom Screwed up Spore (or worse, screwed up their computer). I can understand the need to protect software, but for online games with cdkey registration, DRM is not necessary, so please get rid of it. The only result SecuRom has is reduce sales and increase Tech Support cost.

SecuRom is the cancer that kills Spore.

I'm afraid this kind of plea - a petition on a forum, doesn't matter if it's official or not - won't work, and the thread will get locked soon. But in case I'm wrong, and I really hope I am, I sign. I love the game, and to be honest I wouldn't mind getting the expansions as well because I know a good part of that money [i]would[/i] go to the people who made the game, and they deserve to be paid for their work. That is, if this SecuROM nonsense gets patched out or at least fixed. If not, well... you get the idea, no need to repeat what hundreds of people already said.

The only people this punishes are the loyal customers. DRM and securrom have not even put a dent in the pirating community. In my opinion EA should take a page from the elder scrolls oblivion instead of fighting a hopeless battle that has caused this loyal customer to turn away completely.

this is my first posting to the spore forms, and it seemed like a good place to start. so heres my issue. when i started playing spore i had a decent Empire going and the game crashed to the point that i had to uninstall and re-install. now at the time i thought nothing of it, yea i lost my saved games but all my accomplishments and creations were still downloadable so who cares right?. well after reading this post im more concerned over it. what if it happens again? then not only do i have to re-install but ill also have to buy a fresh copy of spore all because of some game bugs? thats the lamest thing i ever heard of...........

You mean 4 second uninstall and 1 hour 59 minutes 56 second reinstall?

Because I've 'never' seen anything uninstall as fast as SPORE. It worried me. Usually they make uninstalls slow so you can think about it. It's almost like SPORE knew people would uninstall it .

People get new computers and may want to try it at friend's houses. I think consecutive installations on one computer should be limited. However, there should be no limit on the amount of computers you can install the game on.

Well I guess I sign it, but with slight hesitation. Only because of my issues I have had with the game and how I was helped through customer support.

For anyone who hasn't followed my story, I have the game installed on three computers (my daughter's, mine and my hubby's). I think that's fair. So saying that we can only run one person on one computer at a time with an many installs as you want isn't going to work. Also, saying leave the CD in won't work either. At least not in our case. This was one of the reasons we didn't mind paying $80 for Galactic Edition. We felt we were getting a good deal by being able to all play at once.

As for SecuRom, I think it sucks. So I sign to get that crap off of my computer. I guess the best solution would be to have some type of de-activation.

A call to EA help lines in which they may or may not actually give you another activation, after you spend 2 hours on the phone, racking up long-distance fees or cell phone minutes, depending on which you use. Seriously, you change your hardware, have to reformat your harddrive, there's another install down the drain. My laptop is on its way out after a little over a year (do NOT buy HP...), and I had to install three times just to get the program to work. This leads me to wonder if I will actually be able to continue playing the game once I get a new computer.

...and I'm NOT buying a new copy of the game. It will be sad, because I will no longer be able to access the editors, which are quite fun, but I refuse to support this business practice any further with my money. I'm a poor college student, I can't afford to fork over more money even if I wanted to.

I will boycott any future EA games if this continues. Which is a shame, because I quite enjoyed the Sims and Sim City.

No need for this petition maxis are already correcting the issues. You now have 5 activations, reinstalling on a machine that has not changed it's configuration does not use an activation so technically that's unlimited installs. A de-activation process is in the works which would allow you to de-activate if you are installing to a new machine or changed you current one, so once again unlimited installs. The only thing you are limited on is the number of machines that are activated at the same time ie: 5.

The fact that you have to go through that is reprehensible. So, what do you do? Deactivate every time you install new drivers or reformat your hard drive? What if you're unable to deactivate for one reason or another? (No access to whatever tools there are because your computer died, for instance)

This isn't fixing the problem. This is just giving us a little more leeway. The truth is, by limiting our number of activations, we do not really own the game, because someday in the future, whether that's soon or years to come, it is very likely you may run out of these activations. And then you will probably have to fork over more money for another copy when there's already going to be far too many expansions, some of which simple part packs rather than truly furthering the game when it was already robbed of its complexity. (Cute and Ugly, anyone?)

If they really want to prevent pirating, they should disallow access to online content unless you have entered a valid code (that is NOT limited to install), because there's really no point to play Spore unless you can play with the online features. Not only would EA not lose its customers, but it would NOT be undergoing a lawsuit over SecuROM right now, it would NOT have such a low rating on Amazon, and there would be a lot of people much much happier.

I refuse to even recommend Spore to the most casual gamer because I will no longer support EA financially as long as this ridiculousness continues.

Back when i played Starcraft, and even now when i occasionally get one, Activation Keys allow you to play single player alone, but once you go online it will not allow you to even go as far as the login screen if you don't have an authentic CD-key. Which i recommend would be the best thing to do.

I hate the mentality that "There is nothing wrong with what they're doing, they own the game not you (as if I paid to borrow it, they own the [i]rights[/i] to the [i]intellectual property[/i] contained on the disc, [i]I[/i] own my copy of the software), Hey it hasn't effected me yet so how bad can it be?". It's this kind of attitude that allows companies to push the envelope further and further against basic consumer rights. If someone buys the game and installs it on their own computer for personal use, and then through upgrades or reformats runs out of the installs and is told by EA they need to purchase a new copy of the game, their rights have been violated. The same way all of our rights were violated when we had software secretly installed on our computers when we installed this game. Because of the attitude of people who look the other way, companies get away with these sorts of morally bankrupt practices. Shame on them and shame on anyone who would suggest that I paid my hard earned money to rent a video game and that I had no right to know beforehand what was being installed on my computer.

I am tired of "renting" games from EA. My life and my time are precious. My money is just as important as theirs. I am not paying for a game just to have it stop working in the future. I have been through this enough in the past.

As far as trying to get more activations from EA, I don't have the time or the energy to waste. I only get a chance to play a game for about 20-30 minutes a day if that. I am not going to spend forever on hold and then beg to get another activation only to be told that their tech support can't help me and that someone will contact me. I refuse to jump through hoops just to play a game that I paid for.

There is clearly an easy alternative to fix this problem; but unfortunately, that alternative is illegal.

There is not an easy fix to this issue. Once critical mass is reached, the game itself implodes, and us: the consumers are left out in the dark aftermath without our game.

Take some time to go over the [b]help-threads[/b] started between now and the last two days, that relate to this concern.

Clearly this is not an isolated incident. Every-day people are waking up to this problem, and it's one that only EA can fix.

Nobody should have to go through the ordeal of EA tech support, just to get a reactivation or to deactivate a system each time they change the hardware.

Arguments to the contrary are so weak they are barely noticeable.

The whole "we're only leasing the software" attitude - despite being technically true - is completely irrelevant. We're talking about [i]customer satisfaction[/i] for an entertainment product here.

I have so far bought all The Sims & The Sims 2 series - and I'm not buying ANYMORE if this is not removed.
I format my computer every 2-3 months just so I can enjoy fresh new environment (sounds weired but I'm used to it), this is the most rediculas thing I ever had to purchase!
And there were no mention on the box about this 3 time activation. This is nearly cheating!

Sarcasm aside. One month, one week, one day... are all a very long time to force people who can't play spore to wait.

You have to remember that this is a game breaking flaw that [b]will[/b] affect all of us eventually, and it needs to be addressed immediately. Promises are empty unless they're kept, and I personally won't stop bringing this up until the promises are kept.

Changing an entire authorization scheme isn't as simple as changing a few variables and writing a few methods. With changing a system as complex as I imagine they have, packaging it in a patch, testing it to make sure it doesn't break things and make the situation worse, it will take time. Software development is not something that happens overnight. We must be patient in these trying times, and have faith that they are working on their promised solution.

Basically if they go 2-3 months from now without changing the system, then we should tar and feather them.

100% positive changing a graphics card would do absolutely nothing to make you need to re-install spore. Only changes in OS or hard drives would have any effect I'd imagine.

I've already "signed" this petition so to speak, for whatever it's worth (I don't like DRM at all, but in the history of internet petitions, especially informal forum-based ones, they generally go nowhere), but I notice that 1 or more people 1-starred this legitimate post by Sardonik. I really hope the people signing this aren't so overzealous that they'd completely ignore actual technical information/solutions to their problems in favor of rabble-rousing fanaticism. You know what they say about mobs after all. They have many heads, but no brains.

Based off what I read, SecuRom detects a system by observing all of its hardware components, so a change to something like a graphic card WILL count as a different system and as result, cost you another install.

Well gee, if that is true then that's utterly ridiculous of them. I thought that the installs were only consumed when the game is installed via the installer, not for replacing something arbitrary like a sound card or network adapter. I really doubt they would go that far myself as plenty of people change components of their computers all the time and they would have factored that in to their initial ill-advised "3 install" limit that they had initially, citing that it's most likely to only be installed on 3 machines or less.

That is true that a majority of the time they don't. But there are several lawsuits going on against EA due to securom and install limits for spore and the securom on the sims 2. It has been said at the lawsuits' pages that they are reading the various forums and talking to people who are posting about problems.

Usually I'll agree with you, but Maxis has proven themselves for Spore -- Just look at the sticky in this forum by [url=http://forum.spore.com/jforum/posts/list/2897.page]MaxisLucy[/url]. It's the previous protest that caused the adjustments to SecuRom, but we need to let them know that this change is not enough. That Spore is hurting because of SecuRom; Spore is becoming insecure (crashing) because SecuRom; and Spore is losing sales because of SecurRom.

Oh and btw, the patch is ridiculous. Sound issues, Game Glitches which make it impossible to pass a crucial part in the space game so you can't exit your star system and go into the galaxy. and Grox that exist on star systems you can't reach. If the ending of the game is the center of the Galaxy... then this game is a joke.

The people with the problems already bought Spore.
They have already handed over their money to EA.

That made me LoL fairly hard. I mean, Tears-in-my-eyes laughing.

Once a customer purchases something, they are allowed to do with it what they want, so long as it doesn't break any copyright laws. In the post with 12 computers, he is legally allowed to install on all of his computers because he owns all of the computers (maybe not all, but most).
What you're basically saying equates to nonsense. Next thing you know, DVD's will only be allowed to be played 10 times in your DVD player, and you're not allowed to play it in anything other than that one DVD player. See how your logic is flawed?

In any case, I've already used one install, and I have now uninstalled the game. I will wait until I have saved up for a desktop. Quite frankly, I got bored with the game after going through each stage three times (and no, I never made it to the center of the universe).
Saving planets constantly and searching out the best places to sell spice got boring pretty quick. And the only fun thing I found to do would cause everyone and their mother's mother to get pissed at me...blowing up planets isn't fun if you're on the run constantly.

SecuROM causes so many problems...being installed on Ring 0 of a PC, it open up so many back doors for trojans to get in through. It's a wonder I haven't seen many thread with "OMG COMPUTER CRASHED!!!1!ONE!!1!" Of course, it would help if I actually frequented these forums.

Oh, and for those Nay-Sayers, EA has already incurred class action lawsuits from both the installation limit (breaks laws pertaining to freedom of purchaser {unless specified in the EULA}), as well as the SecuROM, which is NOT mentioned in the EULA. Most likely, EA will be taken to court, and prosecutors will most likely cite the case of the FCC investigation into Sony's DRM problems.

Thats is a good point.
And they 'promised' to up the instal limit.

I just don't think this is the main concern at the moment, but I hope to be proven wrong.
The cynic I am, I have a hard time believing that they will adress it again other then to say, here's the tool now upgrade your accounts.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but this made me think.... what if this was EA's plan all along? It's not a mystery that the PC gaming industry is far from its "golden age", and more and more game devs / publishers are turning to console-only development. Now, EA can't just do that in a snap, part of the reason is that it's grown so big over the last Spode-knows-how-many years, and has acquired studios that focus on the PC platform (Maxis, Bioware...). This would be an easy way out of the PC market for them, in a year or so they could easily claim that it's no longer profitable to develop PC games, [i]piracy[/i] and all... and they'd certainly have the numbers to back it up.

I know, I know, it sounds like one of those aliens-are-among-us conspiracy theories.

I think you're confused.

We're talking about SecuROM's [b]installation[/b] limitation that is [b]preventing people from playing spore[/b]. Not the in game creature piece limitation that prevents people from making exceedingly fancy creatures.

I agree even if they leave it at 3 install ( but be able to remove it when i know u need to formate) but there are time that u can't tell if u need to reformat (blue screen of death big hardware changes that require reformat) that why u should riseing to 5 and if u run out then make people have to ring up to get the key reset/new one(blocking all key linked to the one u replace with to stop hackers form give keys away) and giveing the buyer of the game to continue

I regret not using the pirate version of spore instead of the bought version the way my friends have (even though they all bought it too), they have been playing spore on their computers happily with relatively few problems where as I'm stuck using only my home desktop, I'd like to use my laptop and work desktop too but I'll be upgrading my home desktop often so I can't spare the installs.

I also got tricked into installing the patch that has crippled spore to the point that I can't play for more than 30min without a crash and uninstalling and re-installing without the patch would probably cost an activation which I may have already run out of since I've needed to update my MB bios/firmware once or twice since I got spore.

FFS EA, if you wan't to stop piracy then stop making piracy nessecary to enjoy your games, securom and install limits don't even prevent piracy in the first place, my friends were playing the pirate version of spore before we were able to pick it up from the store despite the store breaking street date and releasing it 2 days early.

To treat legitimate, paying customers like this is heinous. EA really had better change this situation quickly or at least work out a way to phone in, enter your license key over the phone and get an instant unlock. Heck, Microsoft lets you do that when you have to reinstall Windows so we know it can be done. EA needs to stop treating honest legitimate consumers like thieves.

#2. The total installation attempts on the [b]first batch[/b] of games released in the month of September have a total of [b]3 installations[/b]. Any other versions of the game released have a total of [b]5 installations[/b], leaving those of us suckers who bought the game early, SOL.

#3. He stated that a de-activation tool has nothing to do with Electronic Arts, and that he did not have a release date available for such a tool.

#4. He refused to acknowledge the multiple days I spent on this particular subject.

#5. He [b]flagged[/b] my account due to the over-use of my account registration key; despite the fact that I've only given the Registration Key to [b]The last Customer Service Representative I spoke to[/b].

#6. He stated that changing out [b]any[/b] hardware will directly use up an installation.

#7. He stated that changing [b]firmware, or drivers[/b] will not use up an installation.

#8. He stated that reinstalling the game on the same computer will not use up an installation, [b]unless[/b] you reformat.

#9. He stated that resetting your CMOS or BIOS will use up an installation.

Now, lets get down to business:

Once again he asked me for my E-mail, and my first Name.

He then asked for my problem; requiring the full details of the problem, including the error name; as well as the number of times I've installed this game on my two computers. The answer was [b]5[/b]. He claimed it had been installed on [b]15[/b], despite the fact that I've only given the Registration Key to [b]The last Customer Service Representative I spoke to[/b].

He then offered to give me [b]3[/b] more installations on my version of spore, but after that I would have to buy a new version of Spore, since he believes that I'm pirating it, or I have given it out to my friends.

I proclaimed my disgust in a polite manner; and he went on to flag my account, stating that if I use my E-mail address again, he'll add more installation limits as a special case. Unfortunately this means I will have to [b]phone EA customer service at long-distance charges to get it done. I can not use their E-mail service.[/b]

However. I tried the game on my upstairs computer.

Now I am extremely upset. I paid the same amount of money that any other joe blow will when he gets the game now. My money is just as important as anyone else's. Yet because I TRUSTED EA and PREORDERED the game, I get inferior treatment and more limitations? That is just wrong. I was debating joining that class action suit. This just is pushing me and a lot of others right towards that lawsuit.

EA would not have the creatures and the sporecasts and the activity on this site or this forum without the people who bought the game on release day or release week or even up til now. Yet we don't get the same rights or the same treatment. If it wasn't for any of us here right now who bought the game, they wouldn't even have a community. Yet they are telling us now that we don't have the right to get 5 installs?

I don't want to have EA automatically assume I'm sharing my game key online or with friends just because my laptop hard drive crashed or I had to change RAM around or I decided to install on my home computer and it decided to have problems as well.

And I don't want them to have the power to restrict access to my game because of that, or any other ridiculous assumption they may make ([b]AND HAVE[/b], see [url=http://forum.spore.com/jforum/posts/list/6800.page]Dairuka's story[/url] for details). The fact that SecuROM exists should, for most customers, be secondary to how it is actually being mishandled.

It's just like the Sims and securom: even though people aren't having problems with it now, anyone who is on the forums should be signing, because eventually, and most likely unexpectedly, someone here will run into a problem.
Looking back, my little sisters' computer has the sims 2 on it and both CD drives no longer work. It was finally scrapped. Now I know why the computer became "sick."

I didn't like this when I first heard of it, and nothing I have seen since purchasing the game has given me any reason whatsoever to feel it is justified. I have several pieces of hardware I want to troubleshoot by testing in this machine. I do not expect to lose all my licenses by exerting my right to change my own hardware.

Furthermore I would expect EA to reimburse me for any phone charges incurred whilst calling them to arrange further licenses.

Just checking back in, I see EA is still clinging to their use of DRM and a pointless, badly engineered and counter-productive install limit. I also notice EA has yet to add the additional 2 installs or the install reimbursement (which should have been there from the beginning) which we were promised. EA must think making empty promises to placate angry customers will do the trick, then it's back to the business of backstabbing them as usual.

I was dumb enough to pre-order 1 GE, and I would have felt alot better pirating it. If I had pirated it and then heard about the DRM, I would have felt good about it. Becaouse I would get it 1 week after the realease, I would have helped the protest againt DRM, and I would feel good about not having SecuRom in my computer. But I bought it, and now I feel like I was fooled, like I am a money cow, and I also know that I installed malware in my PC on pourpose and I by far didnt get the game I expected. Now all I can do is feel like an idiot an complain in the forums. So much for the higher quality of original products over pirated ones.

The problem is it feels more like a long term rental this way. I like to update my computer fairly regularly and I don't like worrying about which software will treat me like a criminal when I do that. Let people OWN the copies of the game they bought. Don't let something so petty ruin a great game!

Some sites said up to 500k copies of illegal Spore were downloaded within the first week. If EA hadn't put this restriction on, that may have been 500k that may have actually bought the game. Also, EA is being sued in Northern CA court for this stuff. I'll have to dig out the case file...

If nothing more this is going to cost EA some money and cause more PR issues. However, i do hope they take it in the shorts. I am all for protecting software but there has to be better ways and then to add insult you clowns add a install limit.

The game is for the players, not for the companies. You reward the players and the company thrives. You punish the players and the company staggers, if not fails completely. Don't focus on being defensive with DRM, because then you're giving an opening for an offensive. Focus on being open and making your customers happy, because then they will trust you and reciprocate.

It might be worthy for EA to note that I only purchased SPORE because of the brilliance of Will Wright and the quality of the games he and Maxis put out. SPORE may be the only EA game I purchase any time soon. I already didn't purchase Mass Effect due to SecuROM, and the news on SecuROM has only gotten worse.

Spore sits right next to my Galactic Civilizations II box. EA, take a hint from Stardock. You're selling games, so focus more on the games and less on ways to limit customers.

Also, anyone else notice that DRM has more of an effect on sales than it does on piracy?

Last weekend my main computer died forcing me to purchase a new HDD. The hdd was at fault. 1 installation gone. The new hdd is all good for now but what if this happens again? I've already installed it twice.

I work in the games industry, I sell this product everyday, the game is excellant, well made and well thought out EXCEPT for this maximum install limit. I plan on purchasing other EA products, I don't think their totally evil as a company, they publish some decent programs, but this limit of installs is a concern for a gamer who likes to upgrade his machine every once in a while. I hope EA take note of this forum because most consumers aren't happy about this at all.

My first post on the forum and it is to sign this petition.
I knew about a lot of Spores problems before I bought it. I wanted something sligthly fun that would last me some days/weeks. Maybe I'm less careful with my money, but I only get to buy games a few times a year and then I tend to buy a span of genres with games I'm interested in to last me to the next time I buy games.
And I already had SecuROM on my machine so it wasn't anything new.
Still, the whole concept of renting games instead of buying is SPORE me off.
At least they should be honest about it and make the price half of other games that you actually buy for good.
There are so many great old games that people still play and they wouldn't be able to if this kind of DRM was implemented in them.
Imagine all those game companies taking a hit and having to close their servers. If that happens your game will be good for nothing.
And yes, people do need to upgrade some time during their lives. Even the most casual of gamers will need a new computer or a different user account etc at some point.

Most of this has been said already though. I have a great car analogy about DRM, but it is long and complicated so I think I will spare it for a more suitable thread.

The makers of The Witcher also followed through on similar guidelines. They pretty much redid the entire game based on player criticisms or suggestions, added new content and features, and it's completely free to anyone that bought the original version, as well as available in stores for people who never bought the first one.

I know of a few hard core gamers who have refused to install SPORE because of the DRM and these same people are too honerable to install a pirated copy.

DRM is a difficult subject. I do not think it is a smart idea but I do understand where the developer/publisher is coming from. They want to ensure that they make money off their labor/investment.

The problem is that the restrictions of DRM only pertain to the people that legally buy the product. It does not stop the issue of piracy.

Piracy hurts both the developer/publisher as well as the consumer. The developer/publisher will increase the price of the games if they feel they aren't receiving compensation for their work. The consumers will complain about increased prices and then probably resort to piracy. This leads us in a circular arrangement where it escalates and never gets any better.

Does DRM fix this? No, it doesn't. It speeds up the process because more people resort to piracy. It also places what amounts to spyware on the consumers PC.

Perhaps what should be done is that games decrease in price to nearly nothing (5 or 10 bucks), are only sold digitally online or at the store via a digital download onto a thumbdrive, then have to be played online like a mmorpg but with a smaller fee. Perhaps 40 bucks a year with a minimum subscription of 1 year. The actual playtime of most games is rarely a year unless they are real good ones. Perhaps each copy would have 5 screen names allowable also with additional screen names for a nominal fee (5 to 10 bucks more per).

So the developer/publisher makes their money and doesn't have to produce a CD or box and the consumer spends approximately the same amount of money. If you want special editions you just send those items (figurines, maps, etc.) to the store and let them hand them out.

I do understand that this method leaves out people without internet connections. But how many people do not have an internet connection anyway? As the world is more connected this makes this a non-issue I think.

O well this is just an idea from a normal guy and probably is full of holes. I do think that fighting piracy via DRM is ridiculous though as it just adds more fuel to the fire.

LoL...Ive been playing Ragnarok Online for over three years...however, I moved to an (illegal) private server that had better gameplay after 2 years on the official pay-to-play server. So games can be played for more than a year (not arguing with you, just showing the other sides for the dev team).

Most of us could could care less. People whining about this complain just to complain. First you don't need to install it on 5 computers, be real. Second, they will give additional keys when/if you need them.

1)Most of these problems stem from the fact that people upgraded their hardware in the computer (ie: hard drive, memory, CD burner...etc). When you first install Spore, it registers just about every piece of hardware in your computer, and then submits that to EA...You change one part, it's a different computer now. That's ONE INSTALL GONE. Reformatting also does this.
2)Most people aren't looking to install on 5 computers. They BOUGHT the game, they should have the RIGHT to install and uninstall at their convenience...not have to call a customer support line (NOT TOLL FREE BTW).
3)I'm going to laugh if a month from now you're on these forums stating that you had to reformat your computer because secretly, with out your knowledge, EA had opened a back door to your computer for viruses, troans, malware and spyware to invade.

If anyone has seen my other post (Only a few) I am not one to stir up things. As a matter of fact I am pretty content with how things have been going. There have been a few bugs and I can understand that. It will get fixed in time.

The one thing I will not put up with is some company that I spent well over 100 dollars on for a game and the limited edition bundle on. That I can only install this game a few times....what is it three? Regardless there should be no limitations to the amount of time that one person can install this game on there PC.

If I have to upgrade my PC and it says that I can no longer play Spore because of GREED MONGERING SPOREHOLES I will be doing everything in my power to boycott this entire company.

Absolutly agree. Software has been givin a free ride for a long time now. Because its such a new and important technology the business community has givin software advantages as a consumer product that other products could only dream of. Well, the tech has been around a while now, and its time for this crap to stop. Once I as a consumer buy a product i have Bought it. That unit of a product belongs to ME now, not you. I can do ANYTHING I want with it, within the standards that were created a long time ago regulating consumer products. Stop trying to continue to own something that you no longer do, and stop trying to find ways for me to pay for the same product that I already have. If you do not stop, I will stop purchasing your products alltogether.

It is painfully apparent to all of us that you have not learned your lesson from the fiasco regarding Bioware's release of Mass Effect on the Personal Computer; there are countless personal accounts of people who have reached their final installation and are receiving an error message, such as the following:

Why are the pirates - who stole your game, allowed to play your game, but we - who paid $60-$80 USD for your game are not? The very people you attempt to prevent from playing your game have more freedoms than we do.

This has to stop. To force your consumer to re-buy a game license we've already paid for merely because of common, simple, every-day computer procedures is ludicrous. Simple procedures such as:

- Hardware upgrades.
- Reformatting a hard-drive for whatever reason we decide upon.
- Firmware upgrades.

Understand that your experiment with SecuROM has failed. We're tired of being treated like criminals, and being forced to jump through potentially [b]expensive[/b] [i](long distance phone calls to a customer support line in texas)[/i] and [b]time consuming[/b] [i](Unresponsive and often automated online customer support)[/i] hoops for the sake of remaining legitimate customers to your company.

Do the right thing - remove SecuROM, or at the very least the limitation on the Total Installations by giving us an easy to use de-activation tool that requires no jumping through hoops on the part of the consumer. Allow us to install at our discretion at our whim. It's what we paid for. It's what we deserve as customers.

Stop making it hard to be a loyal customer to Electronic Arts, and Maxis.

You are allowed to install Spore on three computers at one time and if you go beyond that third computer and want to install it on a fourth computer than EA has a right to charge you for a additional license being it is their program. Personally, I find Spore boring and nolonger have it on my computer. Now if you are talking about installing on one computer more than 3 times and then asking you to pay for a additional fee thae you have something.

Seriously, this three installation problem is rediculous. My computer, being the POS that it is, is making me very nervous because I don't want to lose an installation due to computer issues. Also, what happens to people if they buy a used copy from someone who didn't like it and returned/sold it. They are forced to play with the account of someone else, or if the 3 installs are up, Oh well, you just wasted money.

EA needs to stop being National Socialist (take that filter) Germany, and suck it up and get rid of this DRM crap. Seriously, legitimate gaming companies are laughing at this crap. It has been said that no real gaming company would restrict their game so badly, and that to say that the buyer does not own the game is rediculous.

Activation limits are anathema to gamers like myself, who play games 5, 10, even 15 years after their original production date. Do you have any idea how many installs of Baldur's Gate I've had since it was released? Does EA have any notion of how many of my computers a game like Dungeon Keeper has been installed upon?

It's a lot more than 3. It's a lot more than 5... but those games allow me to play off the CD, no activations, no server-side verification on servers that would long since have been shuttered. I still play my "best games" long after the developer's "activation servers" will have been logged off for good, and all a decision like this is accomplishing is forcing me to pirate your software to get my money's worth.

Signed with the force of my two-plus decades of computer gaming that EA and Maxis are not even considering in their hunt for "Moar Profits".

yes, you can install it on 3 different computers but the problem is just that.

1) they didnt inform us when we bought it.
2) most people had installed them on many computers.
3)the limitation works against new hardware, driver changes as well as formating.
4) securom runs in the back around undetected and unable to find.
5) EA STATED that they would be willing to help give new auth/keys out if you do come into an issue, they also stated that it would be very easy to obtain a new one which that as well isnt as easy they made it out to be.
6) EAs tech support phone and on the web doesnt help us the consumer when obtaining a new key.

so yeah they have the right to charge for a new key, but im not asking for a new key now am I? im asking to get more installions/auth for the game which clearly is a huge issue for them. the biggest thing I was worried about was if they would live up to their word when it came to giving out the auth keys but what happened? they didnt, infact its been a complete let down when it comes to that and your saying that limited installions is perfectly fine which to me isnt because of all the reasons I stated.

Owning a fridge or laptop is different than owning software. If you think you own the program try to circumvent it or reverse engineer it and resell it. EA still has a right to limit installations because it is their program. I understand what you are saying about making major changes to one computer, however, EA is not alone in how they handle this. MS does it and other software does it. It would be nice if they inputed this in the manual or on the software informing the customer on what to expect. You may not have asked for a additional key or whatever, but I am only responding to what I am reading in your post. As for as the pirates, get real they have to catch them first and that is not easy. This situation is not going to get resolved in a week or two. Another thing and it is puzzling on how people continues to buy EA products when you know their track record. Another thing, not everybody is having the same problems and if you are then I feel for you. Sure there is some things that I disagree with EA such as not putting notices on their software informing the customer on what type of CPS are being used and how it will affect your computer. Again on how many installations you can have is up to EA discretion and if you feel that is not enough for you, you have two choices, don't buy it, or pay for the additional installations. EA knows what is going on and there is a lawsuit already in the works.

Spore is a dull game at best and I have played a lot of games and it is losing sales for combination of reasons not just one. As far as the installation limit it depends on how you define the limitation. 1.you only allowed 3 installations on one computer and after the third installation you must pay for a additional license(I installed more than 5 times and never was asked to pay for another license, also I don't agree with this option) 2.you are allowed to install up to [b]three computers and if you have a fourth computer you must pay to use on the fourth computer.[b](again no problem here and this option is better than option one) MS has limits on their software as well as other software companies so if this is in the lawsuit it may not work with the exception of option one which don't agree with paying for another key. Again Spore is a dull program and it is not even worth my time. I also dislike Securom but like other CPS it has become part of life. Good luck!

Yes, if they "leave that out" from the front of the box, they are being "shady" and admitting to me that if they are hiding or withholding it, they are up to no good. If it was, in fact, a legitimate deal, they would clearly state it on the box.

Point is, they hide it... they dance around the subject, and in the end they get caught anyways, and lose customers as a result. The limits are horrible... at least with microsoft, they dont give me any hassles getting an auth code. I admit I've been aggrivated cause EVERYTIME I reinstall XP or Vista I have to call them, cause it says my code is in use (yea BY ME). The posts in these forums are just the opposite, EA in fact, does not make it easy to get additional authorizations... what are they protecting, what are they hiding. Their up to no good, either way, that's for sure.

I've spent a total of [b]5 WEEKS[/b] attempting to fix a graphical bug in Spore by contacting Customer Services. Usually, what I would do in this situation would USE UP MY LAST INSTALL.

STEAM is a wonderful service. You can download the games AS MANY TIMES AS YOU WANT. You can install the games AS MANY TIMES AS YOU WANT. You're only allowed to play one game at a time, but how could that pose a problem to the average user? Has EA noticed that Spore has been pirated more times than Half Life 2, which was arguably a more successful game at release time and was also released YEARS AGO?

EA Download Manager is a horrid impersonation of Steam - Install 3 times, and you can't download your games after 6 months... Honestly. What is wrong with you idiots?

Windows processes that Steam uses:
steam.exe - Runs whenever Steam is running and manages private messaging as well. Creates an icon in the System tray that can be used to access features. Exit Steam and this process exits
GameOverlayUI.exe - Runs when a game us accessed through Steam. Allows use of Steam content during gameplay by pressing Shift+Tab. Works in any game by any publisher. Exits when said game exits

Windows processes that SecuROM uses:
UAservice7.exe - Allows SecuROM to have [b]more administrative privileges on host computer than the administrator[/b]. Runs as a [b]Windows service[/b]. Allows direct access to the kernel. Runs as long as computer is on.
Various driver modifications - Cause some major problems. Files copied to flash drives are corrupted. DVD RW drives cease function. A significant decline in computer performance is noted. SecuROM files can be found in the /system32 folder, intended for use only by Windows itself. Run as long as computer is on.

[i]GET RID OF SECUROM COMPLETELY. The game has been cracked already. Keeping it there isn't preventing any more piracy. 90% of software pirates wouldn't buy the game anyway. Don't force your legitimate customers to obtain a pirated copy of Spore in order to have a functioning computer. I had the sense of honesty to obtain Spore legally and because of this I have been hosed. Because of my problems with SecuROM, I have been introduced to the cynical, corrupt underworld that is known as "torrenting", as have many of my fellow gamers. Spore has trained an army of pirates. Piracy as it was was filled with people who would not purchase the game even if there were no place to download it illegally; now it contains outraged masses who refuse to pay $60 to [b]rent[/b] a game. Say NO to SecuROM. Say NO to runaway corporate greed. Say NO to EA.[/i]

I have the game, I buy dozen of games a year for PC and all the consoles. I am an enemy of piracy but this method it's just not right. I change my hardware often. Besides, I know people with the pirated copy and they would never buy the game in any way. pirates just don't buy, I think it's an educational problem. Put the money of campaigns to educate rather than on tools that hurt paying customers.

The people who will buy the game will buy it and those who don't will wait until someone cracks it and put's up on the torrent. I need to restore it from a back up or reinstall because of bugs then there goes another install. the people who buy the game will and their experience of the product is spoiled because of DRM. There is a forum I go too, where many people on the forum said that they did not buy Spore because of the DRM and that only hurt sales and many have pirated it or just didn't get it. Spore has been pirated even before it has been launched in the USA, LOTS of people downloaded the pirated copy because of SecuROM and install limit.

SecuROM is simply not protecting their product against piracy, it's like sending a SWAT group to destroy every house of a city while the criminals are in another country.

noticed patch #3 is available today for macs and PC. since i i never got patch #2 to work i am just going to assume patch #3 is a joke as well. not only should EA remove this limit but they should get patches working properly for Macs (this means having patches install the way they say they are supposed to which is automatically on start up), and they should apologize to the community as a whole for their useless support in this matter. very disappointing considering how long everyone loyally waited for this title to be released. Ever since I found out I won't be able to [b]EVER[/b] reinstall the game when either me or my brother needs a FormatC, I've become very reluctant to buy EA games. If they could bring out some patch now that disables the DRM to replace it with three [b][u]installations at a time[/b][/u], I might start buying EA-games again after all.

I was actually planning to buy that Creepy and Cute Expansion Pack because I liked the game. Now I'm treated like a bloody pirate, however I actually paid for it.

Frankly, I don't feel as if Spore is even worth the fight any-longer, but there are still other great games on the horizon that are being threatened by so called [b]protection[/b] that SecuROM 7 supposedly offers.

I have already used 3 installations on my pc because of a .exe corruption from the last patch.
Yes i tried all they fixes they had posted but only after total uninstall second time and manually deleting the .exe did the 3rd installation work with last patch and Cute and Creepy.

If you guys really hate DRM's, then we need to band together and make the companies that're dumping SecuROM 7 feel appreciated for their decision.

I'm happy for the people who just got Spore. It means that if they're smart, and pre-emptively deauthorize their computers before making updates to it, then they'll never run out of installs.

Customer Support burned two of my installations in a misguided attempt to fix my game before giving up and stopping responses entirely. This was months ago and the major part of the reason I quit before. I suspect that if I upgrade some piece of hardware someday that the whole game's going to be shot. The whole thing is just silly. You must realize that the pirates are not getting any more enjoyment then we are. Whenever I play a computer game, I never install it on more then one PC. I thought tha it would prevent installation, but with spore I get THREE!? Man, I am very lucky to be able to install the game on multiple PCs.

i feel strongly enough about this that i bought my copy of spore used so that ea wouldn't get any money, and i was ready to spend a lot of time complaining if the install limit caused me any problems (so far it hasn't, but i haven't had the game all that long).

this install limit interferes with the right of first sale (which is basically when someone decides they don't want their game anymore, it's perfectly legal for them to sell it to someone else and for that someone else to use it) in that the buyer can't tell how many installs the game will allow. there might not be any left at all! i took this risk since i chose to buy a used copy, but what if somebody just wanted spore and didn't mind having a used copy if it meant he could save a couple bucks and didn't realize that in all likelihood that copy would already be down one install? that's just not right.

the deactivation tool is a step in the right direction, but a very small step since it does nothing for the person who bought a used spore game from someone else who had used up all the installs, since you can only deactivate the computer that you run the deactivation tool on. it also does nothing if your hard drive dies, assuming that a new hard drive is treated as a new computer. they don't even provide a way to find out how many installs you've used up!

a good point! i am able to run spore on my desktop and laptop on the same time off the same account with the same cd key -- if that was the intent that a person could buy spore and have multiple active installs at the same time, i must applaud! i normally assume that with any software if i only bought one copy, only one installation of that copy may be run at a time (so i could have it on my desktop and play there when at home, and also have it on my laptop and play there when traveling), so being allowed to use it on multiple machines at the same time is a bonus.

first of all, copyright infringement is fundamentally different from stealing in a big way. of course the producers of music, movies, games, software want you to think it's the same because stealing is worse than infringement. the fundamental difference is that stealing is that when you steal something, the person or organization you stole it from doesn't have it anymore. with infringement, they still have it, but you have it too. since they created it (or paid someone to create it), it's reasonable to expect that people who enjoy it should show some appreciation by way of paying for it. to be clear, infringement is already wrong (and illegal), but calling it stealing when it's fundamentally different from stealing is manipulative and greedy.

secondly, the restrictions on spore are only going to stop casual infringement, where someone buys the game and then installs it himself and also gives it to a few friends to install as well. it's not going to stop the large-scale infringement of people just downloading it from the internet because there are plenty of people out there capable of removing the protection and posting it for anyone who wants it to be able to get it. also in the case of casual infringement, maybe you have a group of 10 kids who are friends and each chip in 5 bucks to buy the game together. it's not legal for each of them to install the game on their own computer and play it, but they're just kids -- if they're parents don't spoil them they probably can't afford a $50 game so copy protection just lost you $50 there (of course it might convince someone else to buy it who would have copied it before).

Only if you replace your operative system... Software updates should not count. And if you do change your operative system, or mother-board or stuff... all you have to do it's run the deauthorization tool prior to those changes.

With the deathorization tool, they backed up in fact from that unsostainable argument... Still screws to whoever wants to legitly resell their game, but least they don't enfuriate multiple computer owners, families, etc...

And I still have an intrusive piece of software called Secu-rom on my computers of which installation I was not informed. (personally I conflict more with EADM, for it's constant pressence and resource grabbing, when actualizations for Spore, or the said deauthorization tool are not even listed there)

i think this new securom marks the first time copy protection is a separate piece of software that affects things besides the game it is meant to protect. in the past it had always been built into the game as far as i ever knew. i have also heard that uninstalling spore does not remove securom, and that securom is actually running at all times regardless of whether spore is running.

this new securom is clearly malware in my opinion -- it is difficult to get rid of, has adverse affects on the computer it's installed on, and does absolutely nothing of benefit to the owner of the computer it's installed on.

also, i've been saying "new" securom because securom's been around a long time, but it used to be built into the game exe file, looking for the original disc in the drive every time the game was started up. i hate having to put the right disc in the drive for every game i play (it's completely installed to my hard drive; so it's only checking the disc in an attempt to prove i'm not breaking the law), but at least the copy protection only ran when the game started up in that case.

Why on Earth would you need Spore on more than five computers, or have to reinstall more than five times? Most people and families don't even own five PCs. As regards reinstall as a result of upgrades, they have a tool for that. Personally, if you need to install Spore on more than five computers you need to get out more often. Really, what's your need for it?

I've used this program for months on the worst OS that Microsoft ever made -- Vista -- and it's never crashed. When I see people complaining about how this program did this, or that, it's usually because they don't understand system requirements, or how to keep a clean, healthy machine running.

The fact is that allowing people to do that reduces sales. It also allows people to steal. I take it EA isn't allowed to make money on what they produce according to what I see in this thread. How dare they try to turn a profit in a free enterprise system. If I was an EA executive, you'd be getting one installation per CD and that's it. One code -- one account. If you want more you better start shucking out some cash. You would not be able to run two computers at once with the same CD key I assure you.

This thread is a good example of, "Give them an inch and they'll expect a trip to the moon."

I have never had a problem with this limit of installs that you profess about. Trying to get all these updates and patches and expansion packs to work I have uninstalled and reinstalled on the same machine dozens of times in the last year of playing and never once has the system complained about how many installs I was doing.

HOW are you doing your installs? All of my purchases are pre-order and thus the install files are avaliable to me on my hard drive;

With the deautorization tool, this stopped being a real issue. Inmoral, kinda fishy... maybe illegal, but not really an issue for the informed user.

Using download you don't need ROM, but you do need EADM. Better, if you ask me.

On the same machine... don't worry. Problem comes if you change hardware... then you better remember to run the deauthorization tool before you change parts, or to a new computer.

(I think formatting, changing OS or mayor software changes also count, but I'm not certain)

It becomes a problem if you have a machine die unexpectedly, or if you uninstall BEFORE you run the de-auth tool.

I am not sure what-all entails hardware changes that create a "new machine", but I know that causes problems as well.

Five installs is not so many if you are having trouble with hardware that fails and is replaced, inadvertently causing a "new machine" before you could de-auth the one that, in effect, no longer exists.

Someone in my family had repeated problems with motherboards, had the original fail and replaced it (eating two installs, one for the original, another for the new MB), the new motherboard was defective and failed a few days later, eating another install, and they finally replaced with one that works, which put them at 4 installs -- all on the same physical machine, and none of which could be de-authed, since they were all due to hardware failures.

So now they have one install left. They did talk to tech support, who were willing to give them 2 back, but that was all.

It can be rough on us people who build on older machines, which is a hobby of mine. Due to that, Spore only lives on my newer machines and none of the reborn dinos.
