I'm one of those who went from a perfectly functioning game to a completely broken one when I installed the patch.

I was able to revert Spore back to its pre-patch state AND keep my saved game alive. Now I'm back on the Spore wagon and conquering the galaxy.

Here is what I did:

1) Copy these 3 things onto your desktop to save YOUR game(s)-
[b]C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name\Application Data\SPORE\Games [/b]
[b]C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name\Application Data\SPORE\EditorSaves.package[/b]
[b]C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name\My Documents\My Spore Creations\[/b]

2) Uninstall Spore.

3) Reinstall Spore.

4) Copy the two folders and one file (see above) from your Desktop back to their proper locations.

5) Choose to skip the "update" when Spore suggests downloading the patch.

6) Destroy the Grox.

this doesnt mean that i wouldn't like gameplay issues addressed, many of which have already been posted. for me, the 2 most important ones would be:

1) more depth in tribe and civ stage - currently i have zero motivation to start a new creature and trawl through these boring stages again. there have been some geat suggestions for improvements in other threads/boards

2) an actual fleet for space stage - each ship could be upgraded independently, allowing you to equip frontline battleships more heavily than simple back room spice-runners

anyway keep it up and eagerly awaiting patchs..or [i]low[/i] priced [i]high[/i] content expansions.

2. Sometimes no sound. Especially i noticed this while socializing.

3. Animationbugs in that sense that my or other creatures are doing actions but those actions are not animated. For example by socializing: my creature sings, but it just stands there and looks. Or an epic has taken my creature, but it wasn't animated. I wondered why my creature won't run or do just anything as an epic was behind me. Then suddenly i was in the epic's grasper for some seconds in which the camera got shaked and a broken animation throwed me then away.

I've been getting that too, before the patch it had only crashed once or twice (over about 20hours worth of play) but now it'll crash every half hour or so and that makes it quite unplayable . One thing I did want to add. Since the patch it seems like sneak doesn't work like it should. About half the time I use it, other members of my group will become "invisible" and not me, or I will and they won't, or some of them will and some of them won't. I think that when I don't, the predators can see me. I have Windows XP, a proper registered copy of Spore, and beyond the minimum requirements to run the game.

Spore was running trouble-free up until I installed the patch. Then, all of a sudden, the game kept closing. Initially, it would take roughly 15 mins into a game (I'm on space stage), before the program would shut down without any warning. Then after a few instances of this, I would not even get as far as the startup screen before "Spore has encountered an Error" message would pop up.

I decided to uninstall the entire game & reinstall it without the patch, so effectively I'm back on v. 1.00, but for some reason, the same problems still persist. I've tried cleaning out the registry, reinstalling without EADM, and deleting the pollinator.package (someone suggested this on another forum) - While the issue when running the game has been resolved, the crash after 15 minutes has not.

At the moment, I feel that EA/Maxis has taken a perfectly good game that I have paid £35 for, and rendered it virtually unplayable. I am extremely disappointed that the patch is so badly implemented, and that EA seem to have done nothing to fix it - I am not the only person who has had the exact same experience, and it seems that my setup is not unique. Thousands of other Spore players seem to be suffering the same issues.

I would like to know if there is any official route I should take to either play a stable game with the patch implemented, or what steps I need to restore the game back to v. 1.00 with no residual patch updates that could be affecting my game.

Is it possible that when the game is trying to load creatures, it is hanging because of missing skins, and because it has to look constantly? I mean errors in someones registry causes similar problems with their computers in general.

Also, I found that opening spyglass helps when you want a creature to re-appear during timed missions. It was posted by somebody else in this forum, but it [u]does work[/u] to temporarily solve the problem. Alright so my Spore game was messing up so I decided to reinstall it. I chose not to delete user generated data, that way I could keep all of my stuff. Well, after I reinstalled it, I tried to start it up and it didn't work. The window for the game would pop up, my mouse would turn into an hourglass, then back to normal, and then the window would close itself out. Nothing ever popped up, it just always does the same thing. Either that or it will give me a message saying " "Spore" is experiencing problems and needs to close" and then it asks me if I want to send an error report to Windows(like that would help). After I click 'Dont Send' it exits the blank program square regardless. The glitched planet caused my game to crash every time I attempted to fly a spaceship down to planet level, making it impossible to wipe out the enemy empire living there. I was hoping that the patch would at least address these errors, so that I would be able to overlook some of the issues I have with the game interface itself. For instance:

1) The broken camera that follows your spaceship at the planet level. How am I supposed to dogfight anything, much less an overwhelming enemy force, if I have a camera that forces me to look straight down at the planet at all times? Shouldn't I be able to move the camera to a comfortable angle and have it stay there? To be honest, this is the biggest of my issues because if I could at least maneuver effectively, I would stand a fighting chance against the constant barrage of enemy attacks.

2) As mentioned, overwhelming enemy forces. The enemy empires have endless waves of ships that outnumber my spaceship, and I can't even outmaneuver them because of a worthless camera system. Why should the enemy be able to send up to three groups of half a dozen ships if I only get to have a handful of useless allied ships?

3) Useless allied ships. They're worthless for anything other than blowing up, which of course only annoys your allied empires.

4) No fleet building option. The enemy gets to make multiple groups of ships to send at me. Why can't I do the same to them?

5) No colony management system. Period. I shouldn't have to fly across the galaxy dozens of times just to build a house or a turret in a colony or collect spice. Why isn't there a system for me to direct colonies to make new buildings from anywhere in space? Why isn't there a system for establishing spice routes between my planets?

6) Constant ecodisasters and enemy raids. This doesn't make the game any more challenging, it just makes it annoying because...

7) Colonies have no real way of defending themselves. Why can't I upgrade at least some of my colonies so that they're able to completely handle ecodisasters or defend themselves from enemy attacks?

I admit, some of these points are subjective. But 1, 4, 5 are just examples of a broken system. Camera placement shouldn't be a challenge. Colony management shouldn't be a challenge. Being overwhelmed by an enemy that gets a numbers advantage you can't even begin to match isn't a challenge. They're just poor design, whether by choice or neglect.
Ultimately, this post comes down to the fact that I'm disappointed in Spore. I REALLY wanted to like Spore. I even wanted to like it when it started crashing randomly. However, it ceases to be an enjoyable game in the space stage. I might even have forgiven this, except for the sound and crash issues I've been encountering since day one. Now that the patch won't even install correctly, I've completely run out of patience. Buying a buggy game is frustrating enough; getting a buggy patch for a buggy game is even worse. All I can do at this point is cross my fingers and hope that the game is patched enough to make it worth playing in a year. Your competition as it stands includes some really great projects in the making, one of which I previously mentioned in another thread. These projects can easily take your fan base at any time.

These problems/glitches, which are getting worse the more I play spore, are making the game a nightmare for my friend who is the one who got me to buy spore in the first place. Not only is he tired of getting attacked by invisible species in Creature stage which you can even select let alone attack back, but now he can't even play through the Cell stage because his own creature is rendering itself invisible, and at times he gets less than 3 FPS while moving about. And don't blame it on his computer, he has a 1 GB Video Card with DDR2 speed. which uses a PCI-Express slot. He also has 3 GB of RAM, all DDR2 speeds, and the only part lagging is his sound which is onboard.

As of tonight I am starting with EVE Online which caught my eye last night. If you don't resolve these patch issues within a week I am done forever with EA / Maxis products. That includes console games which until this happened, I was intent on purchasing the latest NHL game.

Please fix these issues or forever lose me as a customer.

You know what, this is the first time I have ever believed a game company when they say they are working on the problem. Honestly, I think it's because this game is worth waiting for, but it is probably also because I am still trying to have hope that they don't just want to take our money and run. I believe they truly DO want to make this better for the user and that they are working on a fix for this extremely agitating problem. It makes sense to me that they are working on it because first of all, if people are not getting a response, then the people at Maxis or whatever are either busy fixing the problem, or are ignoring us. Considering how complicated the error seems to be, It will most likely take a while to fix, so them fixing it seems more likely than the alternative.

On mac the patch stalled at about 95% and I had to force quit, now the sound only works in the left speaker - there doesn't seem to be anyway to reinstall the patch or rollback without reinstalling the game.

On PC running boot camp the patch installed fine but I'm getting blue screen of death in the space stage every couple of hours or so. It seems to be pretty random, there's no particular action that seems to cause it.

Overall the patch is pretty poor - my question is if I reinstall the game to 1.0 will it use up my last install (of the 3 install limit)?.

As an aside, this is actually the first EA game I've ever bought, I'm pretty picky about the companies I buy from - if it's not Valve, Blizzard or Stardock I normally don't touch it with a 20 foot pole, after the performance of this patch and subsequently finding out about the 3 install limit I doubt I'll purchase from this company again. Spore is a great game it's just a shame it wasn't published by Valve or someone who knows what they're doing.

You must have missed the post clarifying this, it is 3 times on 3 different computers or 3 different hardware configs. If you reinstall it again on the same PC - it does not use up an activation.

Even if you did use up the activations - you can ring EA and get more. Sure it is annoying and I am not agreeing with it, but your not forced to buy another game copy.

Now, your creations that were uploaded will autodownload again after reinstall. This includes all buddylist and sporecasts you have as well. Direct downloads of specific's wont. Anything missing from your list which I have heard rarely but does happen can be easily found by searching then just need to save it. You can also put a creature directly into a stage if file is lost. Say you had one civ creature. All you need to do is start directly from civ stage and reload it. The card logs it's history path so you won't need to worry about losing your bonus. The background and symbols on the card bottom tells you it's progress. Only real negative is you cannot load an intermediate creature phase back up.... The save file is easy to do though, just read and follow.

I had the "cache" bug upon installing the patch. i.e. invisible objects, creatures, planet texture etc...
I did a full uninstall, saving (copying elsewhere)
C:\Documents and Settings\Yannick\Application Data\SPORE\Games
and
C:\Documents and Settings\Yannick\Application Data\SPORE\EditorSaves.package

I deleted the content of the SPORE folder.

I re-installed, copied the folder and file back.

For some reasons the game did not download from the server every of my creation (especially, no building cars or ufos) but I got most of them (creatures) back and my save game are working. Of course I'll click "not yet" when asked to patch from now on.
I've jsut played 2 hours straight with the same bug free environement I was used to.

Also, the game was not working fine in 05. That was a demo system running on high grade production computers. They are complex and not really retailable due to the sheer system requirements. Also, because they were pc releasing, they need to test and debug on so many possible systems. The sheer variety in OS and hardware alone makes it a trying task. Now for many games, this isn't so bad since the game engines are already debugged. However with spore, they have multiple engines that need to work. Also they probably had no AI yet developped.

As stated, it isn't as easy as saying patch. A patch is different from a mod. Most mod just change values and such. Like a PROM chip in a car. Even mods often cause crashes if you do something wrong like with the asymetry mods. Making a patch that changes hardware/software interface is something else. some people had prepatch problems and made a big stink causing the patch to be rushed and as such many others had confliction issues. It isn't hard to reinstall, just follow what I said above. In less than an hour you will be having prepatch smoothness.

Also it is not secuROM. Yes, that has issues, but if it was that, the game would be messed before patch. Relax on the hype, do a clean reinstall and make sure you don't have any mods. Then follow what I said earlier about backing up your save file. I said my peace on how to get the game running fine by removing the patch and how to do so without data loss. Whether you use that info to get your game running or if you choose to forget about it by getting all mad on the forums is not my concern. If it takes an hour and a half to install, then do the removal, start install and grab a dvd.

Intelligence Quotients are completely superficial and not taken seriously by any area that deals with cognitive abilities. On top of that the people who do score exceptionally high don't run around shouting it. Just like well endowed men don't run up to strangers and say "My slong is like donkey kong!"

I would say using w/e instead of what ever is far more irritating, because it shows everyone around here that you don't give a SPORE. Which in turn means nobody should give a SPORE about you. Which is simple enough.

I'd also like to note for whoever was saying its not DRM, there have been quite a few people who have removed SecuROM and noticed improvement. Now one can argue that it is because of chance and each computer started working just coincidentally with the removal but the likelihood isn't very high.

At any rate, they'll patch it when they patch it. My concern is that there is never any updates to even an estimated timeline of patching, operations planned in the patch, or even version number of the patch. Nothing big nor small is finding its way into the information superhighway and I find that highly upsetting.

Meh. Back to Lego Batman . Lego Batman was marketed as a kids game and it has proven itself to be quite a bit more enjoyable than that. Whereas other recent purchases marketed as science games with deep gameplay and well...I'll let my signature image do the talking about that.

I had the "cache" bug upon installing the patch. i.e. invisible objects, creatures, planet texture etc...
I did a full uninstall, saving (copying elsewhere)

I deleted the content of the SPORE folder.

I re-installed, copied the folder and file back.

I've jsut played 2 hours straight with the same bug free environement I was used to.

The first one to copy C:\Documents and Settings\Yannick\Application Data\SPORE\Games is your saved planets. Save this and you will not lose your planetary progress.

I downloaded the update on Friday, applied it...then, mid-patch process, I ran out of disk space (had over 2GB available...?) Despite that, it said that the patch was successful. On launch, the app said that important files were missing.

Threw the application into the Trash (running on a Mac, so there's no "uninstall"), cleared out yet more space, reinstalled, re-patched (this time, with enough space for it to work).

End result: AFAIK, all my creations were saved and exist, but I have no audio whatsoever. I've updated the audio settings (between 2 speakers and 4 speakers), low-mid-and-high quality, etc, but no changes stick.

No, this isn't a hacked version. This is a pure version, shipped right from the Apple Store when the product was released.

I play like this after getting the crash almost every time
Get alerted of home planet attack.
Leave what I'm doing (maybe get 2-10 minutes between attacks)
Read the home world message.
Land on my home planet.
Knock off the attackers.
Gather my drops from the kills.
Listen to my home planet trader/mission giver.
I leave my planet and crash maybe 60-70% of the time. Unrecoverable. Only requires restart of Spore.

I normally save when I reach the planet and has saved me many lost hours as I did not save as much when I first started playing.

If a patch gets downloaded, I wait and test. Last patch did not work for me either.
If a patch does not get downloaded. I terminate my session and go play some other game.

Does EA not get it? Can they not see the server disconnects on their server? They must have a slew of messages.

Let me see the logs, I will tell you what is wrong. How long can you take to solve a problem affecting so many users?

This is the highest costing game I have purchased ever and its also the best and worst. Worst because the end game is absolutely foul buggy and stupid. Content is repetitive, crashing endless and alerts are off the charts.

So where do I get a refund? Or a patch that corrects this issue?

Thinking that this might be because of a bad video card (I have had other games crash and the error file indicated a video problem) I replaced my nvidea geforce 7900gs with a radeon hd 2600 pro but I am still crashing.

My system is a Dell xps 410 with a dual core 2.6 ghz processor and 4 gig of memory and now, a 512 meg video card. I am set up for automatic updates from Microsoft and have updated all of my drivers.

In my case the crashes were being caused by other devices being plugged in to the computer - I had my iPod, midi keyboard and a USB dongle for some audio software attached to the computer when the game was crashing all the time and when I unplugged everything but the mouse and keyboard the game started working perfectly.

This probably isn't the case for everyone but it something people can try, I have played a couple of 4-5 hour sessions since doing this and the game hasn't crashed once.

Just a note that as of 01 Oct 08 1700 hours I am still not able to play the game since last week due to crashing.

1: I get the quick flashing, frozen screen while trying to defend my home world from bad guys.
2: The screen freezes when trying to zoom out from the home world to space.

There are enough other posts about this that I am just waiting for the company to make another patch for this. I applied the first patch last week and it did free up the game for a couple of days but then the problem of freezing upon leaving the home world began again.

The event log doesn't update once it gets flooded with events that are from users with incorrect or future dates. Right now my event log hasn't changed in days because the current event items show dates between October 4th - October 25th.

At this point, most likely sometime in November. Your guess is as good as mine. However, there is a temporary fix that was posted a week ago by one of the Maxis people.

Locate the icon you double click to start spore, and instead of double clicking it, right click it. Then from the popup shortcut menu, left click properties. This will open the shortcut properties.

There should be a text box labeled Target to the left of it. Click inside that box, and move the cursor all the way to the right. You should see something similar to this in the box:
"C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\SPORE\Sporebin\SporeApp.exe"

At the end of it, you'll likely see a minus sign followed by something about it being the US or English version. Delete it and copy and paste this in it's place. -jobPriority:0

It has to go outside the quotes, at the end of it for this to work. This should clear up most problems that people are having.

The whole target should look like this when your done.

"C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\SPORE\Sporebin\SporeApp.exe" -jobPriority:0

At this point in time, I believe you need another CD Key to do so. I remember one of the developers saying they were going to change this pretty soon. Give them a little while till they do so.

That would really be great. I tryed everything but no chance. Strange thing is, all my other games who have a shortcut on my desktop, look like in the example above. I could edit the exe if I want to, but just the shortcut from Spore is not highlited, so I could edit "jobPriority" like in the example above. Very strange.

First off, a standard re-install will not work, you need a clean reinstall. To do so, do the following.

Go to C:\Documents and Settings\(User name)\Application Data\SPORE. This file is what causes the cache glitches, however in the folder there is stuff that needs to be copied to preserve your saves. this is the following:

Folder: Games (this is your save planets)
File: EditorSaves.package
Folder: CityMusic (if you create your own)

After copying this, uninstall the game and delete this whole folder. Then go into the program files folder and make sure it is deleted. After reinstalling, copy them back.

Please make sure the patch only FIXES stuff, and not add a bunch of other glitches like the last one did. So please take those few extra days for debugging. I'd rather have to wait another week for an actual fix then get the patch now, but have to wait another MONTH for the next patch which fixes the bugs caused by the previous one.

When facing invisible creatures, hit escape to bring up the options menu, then select the spyglass option to view your surroundings. Let it sit for a minute, and move the spyglass cursor around the screen through random locations. You'll eventually see the cursor change to indicate it found something. At this point it'll be a moment aka 10 - 30 seconds and all the creatures will be visible again. Once this happens, go back to the game and everything will be visible again.



Sorry this is a drag to have to do, but since it's now approaching the month mark since Maxis screwed up their game, and with no patch in site, you'll have to deal with it as it is.

I was in the Space phase of my game tootling around the galaxy when my game suddenly crashed all the way to the desktop. The only error message was the standard Microsoft Reporting Message that says, "Spore has encountered a problem and needs to close. Sorry for the inconvenience."

Now all I can do is get to the galaxy screen. When I try to open up my old save game it crashes to the desktop.

I started a new game and played through the Cell Stage. Before I advanced to the Creature Stage, I saved my game. After saving I tried to advance to the Creature Stage and my game crashed to the desktop. I restarted and got back into the new game where I left off. I tried to advance to the Creature Stage again and the game crashed to the desktop again. Now I can't get into either of my saved games, the pre-crash old one, nor the new one...the game just crashes to the desktop when I try to open any saved games. When I create any new games, regardless of the stage I start in, it crashes to the desktop when I try to advance to the next stage. Apparently I can still use all of the creators and save my creations....just can't play.

This is a freeze/lockup/crash, but one that can't be easily tested/repeated by me, as aside from crossing your fingers and waiting forever, you'd really need to be able to force game events to see it.

I uplifted a species near me, very soon after getting the "they have reached the space stage" message I hop over to their homeworld. I decided I was going to wipe them out because I didn't care for their philosophy. Rather than see it be a complete waste I decided I'd create an alliance with them, then a trade route (for those stats) then wipe them out.

They only had three cities on their homeworld. I drop an antimatter bomb on the first, and then the second. Not until destroying the second do I get the "they might start shooting back" and "they're losing interest in your alliance" messages. While on my way to the third I get the "an unknown fleet is attacking your allies" popup, but I ignore it thinking I'll take care of it right after destroying the last city.

I drop a third antimatter bomb on the third city, and right as the white flash comes up it freezes. (Visually, but the sound repeats.) I'm thinking "great, it crashed", and then I notice that the popup was about a fleet attacking the ally and planet that I was just trying to wipe out.

The screen went black before I could check the minimap, so I'm not sure if I was the "unknown attackers", or if a second fleet just happened to come along during my attack. Look mate, the reason he can't answer any questions about the DRM is because he, as well as Maxis, has absolutely [i]nothing[/i] to do with it. Implementing SecuROM (as well as porting to Mac via Cider instead of writing natively) was EA's corporate decision, it's apparently also their policy for all future products unless they change it. Don't get me wrong, I have a huge problem with both SecuROM and the install limit too and want to see it gone, but bashing Maxis over it won't get you anywhere. Remember, EA [i]owns[/i] Maxis.

It's probably best to put bugs and game issues in this thread. And keep them in this thread so the developers don't have to go looking. Not only that, but copyright issues are generally considered a very touchy subject. They don't want to issue statements that might back them into a corner, or that may come across as new company policy. Those issues have to be addressed delicately, and usually in a more public forum such as the media, or through a press release.

Either way, as long as you don't attempt to break into the program, and modify it's code, you should be ok. Also, they "did" raise the install limit. And Lucy did mention that if you reached it, that wouldn't be the last time you could install it. You'd just have to contact customer support and explain your situation. Most of the time, situations like that they are willing to accommodate people on. It's when people get irate and irrational that they turn into a customer no-service department. At the top of the properties box, is the general tab active, or is it the shortcut tab. Cause the shortcut tab is the one you want. Vista or XP, it's the same in both.

Another possibility is that your not logged on your PC as admin. The ability to modify things like the properties box can be blocked if your not logged on as the Admin of your computer. Admin = Administrator account. I may be hundreds of light years away, having traveled through 2 or 3 or more wormholes, and my colonies are screaming bloody murder as the Grox descend from the heavens to lay waste to them. Even T3 planets with 3 colonies and the auto-turret gun roaming around the planets atmosphere is not protecting these planets from attack. None of our allies respond to these attacks and the fastest way to get back home...if you are hundreds of light-years away is just to get yerself killed off and respawn in your home-space. This is annoying and tedious. We need to be able to have more then one spaceship active. Several to patrol around our home system and investigate invasions, and others to use for exploration or conquering. Either this or there needs to be a more powerful planet protection system that can be put in place that will automatically repel invaders or make your planet(s) undesirable for invasion/attack.

[b]#3[/b] I am tired of playing baby-sitter/protector between my allies. Many times I have made allies with 2 or more races. Unfortunately, these races are on rocky terms between themselves, or are already warring between themselves. They call on me constantly to come save their colonies because the other one is attacking them. The only thing to do is to destroy the attacking race, which is still my ally. This is assinine! There needs to be a way to diplomatically solve the war between these two races that are allies with me. Either bribe them to stop or find some diplomatic quest to go on that makes THEM allies between themselves. No more of this "come save me my enemy is attacking, even though I know its your ally" SPORE.

Please tell us that you are not using the same testing process that was used on the first patch. Forgive my very cynical view, but after the first patch it is up to EA/Maxis to rebuild confidence. A good start would be a patch that repairs not only the original issues, post patch issues and also the ability to actually install the patch, which is still a problem for me. When this new patch comes out will it address the failed install of the first patch? There is still quite a few of gamers that the patch did not install originally and are still get the "old file not found, However, a file of the same was found.
