re: evolution and christianity, the Papacy has acknowledged the theory as not being opposed to christian belief. In fact the Anglican Chrurch's official position is that evolution was probable.

You're not required to agree with Darwin to participate here, you're simply required to acknowledge his ideas and reflect them in the form of a creation.

Darwin was never became an athiest he was always a chrstian, his faith almost fell once hs daughter died so young. Darwin actually thought evolution helped prove creationism. What do dinosaur bones and museums prove? The rocks date the fossils and the fossils date the rocks. That's they're system. Museums can prove nothing to you.
Dinosaur bones prove that large lizards lived on this planet at some point in time. They Also tell us how the dinosaur could've possibly looked, and the lifestyle of that animal can also be revealed from these bones. Don't let them get in your head!

This is about the future, and the next step in evolution when robot overlords take over the human race.

It is completely related to Darwin, because his theory can be used to prove robot overlords. According to Darwin, the weak die off, and the strong survive, and multiply. Because Robots were designed to do things humans can't do, that means that robots are stronger than humans. So humans will die off, and robots will live on.

I am not a Christian, and I believe in UNconditional love and UNconditional respect to everyone. While the game Spore has truly some lacknesses, so it is still a very innovative game. I also like the idea of the Spore team to call to this evolution and to remind, with it, to the birthday of a true pioneer. It is important not to kill the names of heroes of education.

I am not sure if I will participate, but simply because I don't have YET any good idea for what to develop for this competition.The things I would love to do, require much more complexity. I hope, there will be an option very soon to allow unlimited complexity, as much as the player's PC allows. I think, it should be up to the player. Even, if those creatures then canNOT be uploaded to the regular Sporepedia...

You are definently right about that. No matter what warnings are given, until this contest is over and out of the way, people are going to go right ahead and argue. Why? One, this ties in to religious beliefs, and people tend to be very firm when it comes to that. I think, the admins here in this forum do a pretty good job. Of course, they could easily ban persons, but they have to be careful doing this. Done too easily, and a community breaks apart or runs away even from the game. Being banned frustrates, so a ban is done only if there is really no other way anymore, and only if there's no possibility that member might come back to senses, I think.

So, while technically easy, it is still a very complex decision to ban someone. That person, and some of their friends, might abandon the game. As an admin, i think you need to have that in mind. And that is, why (I believe) the admins here are considering well their actions. I respect them, and think, this forum got indeed some pretty good admins, so far as I can observe.

Basically, it's a collaborative exercise in which a group of players create an imagined world and its inhabitants, "evolving" them in response to environmental changes. I realise I can't enter the contest with this since I'm not actually creating anything in Spore, but it seems like a good place to post the idea.


[b]Setup[/b]
Get a bunch of people together to play. One player assumes the role of Evolutionary Coordinator (EC). The others are Technicians, and will be doing the actual evolution.

The EC forms a plan of forthcoming events for the world on which evolution will be simulated. This plan should initially be kept secret from the Technicians, with details becoming revealed as time unfolds.

Through whatever method you choose (EC decides, players vote, etc), decide on the initial conditions for the world in which you'll be playing. You may choose to play anywhere; a water world, a volcanic hell, maybe even a moon made entirely of cheese. Follow this with a number of events which will occur in the subsequent turns. Each event has a number of criteria for survival. These criteria may be quantitative or qualitative - for example, one item might rely on the sum of the creature's social stats; creatures with a higher total are more likely to survive. Another might relate purely to the creature's appearance; suitable colours and patterning to camouflage itself in a forest, for example.

An example plan might look something like this:

[i]World of Sporia[/i]
[b]Initial Conditions:[/b] A lush jungle paradise. New animal life is just beginning to emerge from the seas and make its way onto land. ([i]No specific criteria here, other than that creatures must be created with the early creature editor.[/i])
[b]Event 1: Disaster![/b] An asteroid impacts in a remote Southern region, throwing dust into the atmosphere and plunging the entire planet into an ice age. Finding food is difficult. To survive, creatures must be camouflaged against the snow ([i]icy colouring[/i]), have keen senses to spot food and potential predators ([i]eyes or other sensory apparatus[/i]), and have some form of protection against the cold ([i]fur, feathers, built-in biological furnace, etc[/i]).
[b]Event 2: The ice age begins to subside[/b]... but as the snow melts, the ocean levels are rising fast! Survivors must adapt to the rising water ([i]capable of swimming, floating or flying[/i]), or find a way to protect their diminishing territories on land ([i]having good combat stats and health[/i]).
[b]Event 3: Sporezilla![/b] The action of volcanoes and earthquakes has created new land for your species to colonize. But even as creatures move into new homes, a new threat is revealed; a giant beast roams the plains, devouring creatures with impunity. Survivors must have some protection against being eaten by the ravenous beast ([i]perhaps being poisonous or covered with spines[/i]), or be quick enough to escape its jaws ([i]high speed, ability to jump, flight, or stealth might help[/i]).
[b]Event 4: Run Away![/b] Despite almost being choked to death on several occasions by poisonous spiny creatures, the beast still lives - worse, it seems to have produced offspring. The only way to survive is to go underground; fortunately, there are plenty of caves nearby. Survivors must be able to move through tight spaces ([i]be small, have a flexible body or some method of digging[/i]) and be able to find food underground ([i]large eyes suitable for seeing in the dark, good sense of smell etc[/i]).

...and so on.

Once planning is complete, the EC communicates to the Technicians the initial conditions of the world. The EC then creates a Sporecast. All participants then create one or more early creatures, which the EC adds to the Sporecast. These creatures will form the basis for the run of evolution.


[b]Playing the Game[/b]

[u]Start of turn[/u]
The EC announces the next event (post it on a forum, comment on the sporecast, whatever works best for you), and the prevailing environmental conditions for the following turn.


[u]Evolution Phase[/u]
Each Technician chooses a creature to evolve in accordance with these conditions. Note that different players may choose the same creature, each tweaking it in different ways to meet the criteria. This is good; creatures in our own world share common ancestors too!

To evolve a creature, the Technician fires up the Creature Editor and makes a small change, to help the species survive under the new conditions. For example, if the EC declares that the world was recently flooded leaving very little land remaining, perhaps the creature may develop flippers, gills, or a breathing tube. Alternatively, it might improve its fighting ability in order to defend its receding territory on land.
Instead of evolving from an existing creature, a Technician might instead elect to create a new early creature which has arisen from the seas this turn - but this should be the exception rather than the rule.

The game is supposed to be about creativity, so Technicians are encouraged to evolve multiple creatures per turn if they want to. Technicians should be rewarded, not penalized, for coming up with creative, workable adaptations to the new conditions laid out by the EC.

Once every Technician has evolved or created at least one creature, any new species the EC deems capable of surviving in the current conditions are added to the sporecast.


[u]Extinction Phase[/u]
Next, the EC reviews all creatures in the sporecast, deciding which of them are incapable of survival in the new environment. To continue the previous example of a global flood, a creature unable to swim well or defend its diminishing territory on land would be a likely candidate for extinction. A creature whose body is made of fire clearly wouldn't fare well on such a world either! Selected creatures become extinct, and are removed from the Sporecast. A second "Fossil Record" Sporecast may be created, in which to keep all the extinct creatures.

It is likely that at least one species will go extinct at the end of each turn, unless conditions are mild. The EC should try and make sure at least one species from each Technician survives the extinction phase - in the interests of biodiversity (i.e, giving players more choice in the Evolution phase), more would be preferable.

Play then continues as the EC announces a new turn and a new event, or declares the end of the game.


[u]Endgame[/u]
Once the EC's plan has played out, you should end up with plenty of nice new creatures to play Spore with. You may decide to devise a follow-up plan to continue the evolutionary process on the same world, or to improvise subsequent rounds if the players all agree to it. The process can, if you choose, go on indefinitely this way. It might be interesting to get more players to join in or take over from the previous players, as this will encourage further biodiversity.

If you've created some fun and interesting creatures then everybody wins, but you might decide to include winning conditions for the final round. You could take it to the vote: players pick their favourite surviving creature(s) as their preferred candidate for advancement to Tribal stage.

A 3D sporecast of the world and its surviving inhabitants could be created - a safari to showcase the ultimate pinnacles of evolution!

The blue dragon nudibranch appropriates microscopic algae, which it in turn uses to produce its own food and gives it its lovely blue coloration.

Something I was not able to pull off, but throwing it out there if anyone needs a last minute idea: The hammerhead shark, extremely common around the Galapagos Islands. Recent research suggests that its trademark hammer-shape head did not form over millions of years of evolution; rather, it was a freak genetic mutation which proved so successful that it became an entire family of sharks.

And I looked it up. He did work with earthworms. He was sick a lot and one day while sick a relative made a comment about what happened under a brick and Darwin the faithful scientist investigated. He eventually submitted a paper to the scientific community about earthworms and their effect on dirt. Horray for earthworms!

It's very well done, and more importantly, it illustrates one of Darwin's [i]most important[/i] concepts: the tree of life. It shows how species "branch" and form new species, starting with a common ancestor.

I'm happy that Banteng cow made the final cut but disappointed that the Sporecast's won't be voted on. My entries were designed to be seen side by side so the viewer could compare the male and female of each species used in the examples. I was explaining Darwin's Theory of Sexual Dimorphism and each entry showed differences in appearance between the sexes for the three main types of Sexual Dimorphism. It's hard to understand the theory without seeing examples.
