This fish tank randomly pulls in hand picked creations from Sporecast collections of aquatic creations.

[b]What will the challenge winner get?[/b]

1st Place: A chance to be featured on Spore.com
Top 10: A spot in the rotation of Submarines in the Spore Aquarium as seen on the [url=http://www.spore.com/view/tools][color=blue]Tools page[/color] [/url]

[b]Your creation:[/b]
• must not have any parent authored by a different creator.
• must not have any offensive creation in its lineage (any parent or child creations).
• must not have any links or references to other sites in the submission's tags, name, or description

Submissions that do not meet the above criteria will not be considered for a feature

[b]Additional Requirements:[/b]
• Your creation must look like a submarine
• It can be made in any editor
• To [b]submit [/b]a creation: publish it with the tag [i]mcsubmarinechallenge[/i] and post a picture and link to it here on the forum
• You can submit as many creations as you’d like
• All submissions must be in by 11:00 AM PST Tuesday (07/07/09)

[b]Challenge FAQ[/b]

Q: Do we get to vote for the winner from selected finalists as we did in the UL challenge? and if 'yes', given the mixed reactions to the UL challenge finalists, will it be possible to win multiple entries into the final (a good thing imho, means quality is considered first) and finally, will we be getting another wonderful poster? - PseudoFrog

A: Yes, we'll select finalists for you to vote on. Finalists will be based on creation merit, not author. This means that if a player enters 2 amazing creations, they might both be finalists. We [i]will[/i] aim to include a diversity of authors in the finalists list, but keep in mind that since multiple entries are allowed, we want each entry to have an equal shot at getting a fair judgment.

I know this is a somewhat controversial decision, so again, we'll see how it goes. As always, your feedback is more than welcome.

No promises on a poster just yet. I'll see what I can do

Just to clarify, as with the [url=http://www.spore.com/sporepedia#qry=ssc-500348709375]McLegends Unlimited Sporecast[/url], any creation posted on this thread will be added to the [url=http://www.spore.com/sporepedia#qry=ssc-500357182249]McSubmarines Unlimited Sporecast[/url]. I make no judgement as to quality or eligability, only Maxis can determine if your creation is eligable for entry into the challenge.

I will only uprate if the creation is not more than 2-3 days old as I don't want to ruin anyones [b][color=green]GREEN[/color][/b] because of rating decay.

Skip to the middle and the end if you just want to see close ups because the video is kind of boring.

It shows 2 things. The area that the weapons are placed is based on the direction of fire, and that the submarine is actually somewhat submerged 3/5-5/7 of the way underwater.

Now I feel bad, the rating system is not working for me so I can't rate up your submarines like I said I would.

Either I'm not getting the thumbs so I can't rate up or I get them (after a very long wait) and I don't get the confirmation pop-up when I rate up.

I do get "error on page" in the status bar when I get the thumbs but I don't know if that's before or after (or both) I press the "Thumbs-Up" button.

My second entry.

Turtle was the world's first submarine used in battle. It was invented in Connecticut in 1775 by American Patriot David Bushnell as a means of attaching explosive charges to ships in a harbor.[1] Governor Trumbull recommended the inventor to George Washington and although the commander in chief had doubts he provided funds and support for developing and testing the machine. For many people this machine was the key to help defeat the British and win the war. The Turtle was its given name though most people think it is shaped like a walnut not a Turtle. [Wikipedia]

Never entered a comp on here, before, nor really taken part in the forum.
But I was browsing this morning, and I thought I'd give it a shot. So, I worked on 3 subs over the course of the past 3 and a half hours.
Not sure if 3 and a half hours means these are good, or if I'm just really awful at making things. xD

The first post said there was no limit to entries, so I thought 3 seemed fair, but I'm not working on any more.

Also, those subs that Vektrix worked on are great. They're certainly different, so I'd vote for those. xD

This is a submersiable habitat, great for escaping wars, protecting endangered species and works well as a bio-containment vessel/ research vessel! It is equipped with a rear cargo bay that not only supplies water to the bio-sphere but also can be used for smaller ocean going craft to enter the ship, during a lock down the runway retracts and a blast door comes down over the hangar as well as each section of glass!

Although still boasting of having 103 submarines it is defiantly refusing to show more than one

Notice the highly advanced style fins for high maneuverability.
The engines are high capacity magnetohydrodynamics with power generation for extended range.
Notice the sweet lines to reduce drag in the water.
Notice that the bridge has a futuristic large scale viewing ports for surface work.
The hatchways are flush with the deck.

this is a deep sea miner with its laser cutter, it cuts out the ore and picks it up with the strong arms and drops the ore in the basket under the sub.

[b]Garnold:[/b] edit your post and remove the [b]/img.ext[/b] from the end of your image location, then we'll all be able to see it. Always use the [b]Preview[/b] button before you [b]Submit[/b] your post so that you can see if the image displays correctly and test your links (right click + open in new window) to ensure they go to where you think they do.

[b]Thunderofwar:[/b] One of the great advantages of using Photobucket as an image depository is that there is a small dropdown selection list, labeled [b]"Reduce to:"[/b], just under the blue [b]"Choose files"[/b] button. if you use this to set the size of your images to a maximum of [b]640x480[/b] you can upload your creation pics, no matter how large and they will fit perfectly into the sporum with little or no loss in quality, and without having to adjust the size before you upload.

I do this for all my screen prints and composited images, here's an example that you may have seen before:

This is a png file that is 1225x998 and 445KB on my computer, much too big for the forum, uploading it to Photobucket with the 640x480 setting reduced it to 640x521 with a file size of 104.74KB, this means both a better fit and a faster download for the Sporum display.

It also has the advantage that you can see all of it and most of it is not hiding to the right of the screen and believe me, the majority of people are not going to scroll to the right to see what it looks like.

You need to post, at a very minimum, a link to your submarine, preferably you should post a picture too.

The flashy thing taking up most of the hull is a sonic wave generator. Although the editor only lets you put it halfway under the water, just imagine that this thing has got to be fully submerged to work. Anyway, I thought it would make a great supervillain weapon.

Neptune's Stepchild is a Gnome attack submarine. Gnomes are well suited to life on a sub. They don't mind being cooped up in the dark for extended periods, and when they reach an island paradise they can party just as hard as the stoutest dwarf or the most reckless human.

I present the Seaking Class Attack Submarine (i)

It is an allrounder, capable of hitting a wide spectrum of targets.

Since this is the (i), or Improved version, it is better than the older model which is somewhere on the Sporepedia in my creations...

Anyways, it is armed with:

Surface: Three pairs of 30 mm repeating cannons for engaging air or sea targets. Twelve Vertical Launch Missiles capable of hitting land or sea targets. Twenty eight flares. Four are in the launchers, and 24 are ready to load. These jam enemy heat seeking missiles. The flares also explode in a cloud of chaff (strips of metal) to jam radar guided missiles. Several shoulder fired Anti-Air/Anti-Ship/Anti-Sub missiles. These are stored in the armory of the ship, and can be fired by the crew. They are not normally seen on the deck, since they are man-portable and brought up only when a target is in range.

Submerged: Twenty four 125mm active/passive/wire guided torpedoes. Eight are loaded in the tubes, sixteen are held in racks. Eight active torpedo countermeasures. These create a cloud of bubbles in the water, which active torpedoes (ones that are homing on by using sonar to ping targets and lock on to them) perceive as the actual target. Eight passive torpedo countermeasures. These emit a broad spectrum of noise to confuse passive torpedoes (which listen for sound of a specific ship that is targeted and homes in on it) into aiming at it instead of the submarine itself.

Either: Crystal-Boosted Laser. The coup de grace of the entire submarine, it can be fired while surfaced or submerged. It takes one minute to charge, but unleashes a beam capable of travelling almost indefinately on the surface, and dozens of miles underwater. It can punch through thick steel.

Power: Nuclear reactor. This is a quiet fuel source that never needs refueling.

Hull: 6 inches of composite steel. The armor is laid in sheets one each thick each. The sheets in the middle carry a strong electric current to detonate armor piercing weapons early to minimize damage. The hull also has an ATDN (Active Threat and Neutralization) system, which uses very well concealed micro lasers to simply fry and torpedoes that get too close. Only if the lasers are offline or fail to work does the hull need to take a blow.

Sensors: 48 sonobuoys. These are laid in the water and collect either active or passive sonar data and relay it to the ship. Two Sonar Arrays, one port, one starboard. These two systems combined give 360 degrees of coverage, with both active and passive sonar. Active sonar is not very stealthy, since it sends out loud pings which are easily picked up. This is only used in time-critical situations. Most of the time, passive sonar listens for ships and submarines, and does not compromise stealth. Passive sonar can also be used to identify the general class of other ships by listening to the frequency of the sound. One radar mast. This simply sends out radio waves, which bounce off objects and reutrn, which gives a good idea of what is around them. However, as with active sonar, radar gives away the the direction in which the submarine is when the radio wave is picked up by an enemy's Electromagnetic Sensors. One EM Sensor. This picks up radio waves, but also is enhanced to give a description of the possible classes of an enemy ship.

I present...the Ghost Class Attack Submarine!

It is a low-tech, low-power, high-speed tactical submarine. It lacks great firepower and sensors, but it is cheap to build and highly maneuvarable.

Surface: Triple 8.2 mm machine guns.

Submerged: Four 120 mm wireguided torpedoes. Two are in the tubes, two are in racks. One 195mm torpedo. This torpedo packs a wallop, creating an explosion equivalent to three smaller 120 mm torpedoes.

Power: Two diesel engines/small bank of batteries. The diesel engines work well on the surface, and the batteries provide quiet underwater power. The sub must surface frequently for a recharge to its batteries, so it often operates on the surface until it reaches a target.

Hull: 1-3 inch thick steel. The armor has no special qualities.

Sensors: One active/passive sonar. This sonar only covers the 180 degrees in front of the ship, but can use both active and passive sonar. One radar mast. This can find the location of ships on the surface, but makes the sub easy to find (thanks to the fact the radar makes in a radio beacon).

This is a very simple ship, but is deployed in huge numbers. Also, its small size and small engines makes in quiet enough to slip past many larger ships.

Roundabouts the 1970's the soviets got it into their heads to mount a 5 kiloton warhead on aircraft-delivered torpedoes. The theory was that they would be used to sink aircraft carriers.

On an unknown planet at some point in the future a group of pirates will be sitting in a tavern mulling over their drinks about how difficult it is to be a pirate when the Navy chases you around with aircraft carriers.
"Airplanes can't go underwater". Say's the first
"Waddya mean by that" Says's the second.
"Well it seems to me that if theys can go undewater then they can't get us" Said the first.

And so a plan was born. However, Pirates being typically lazy and lacking any real engineering skills decided to steal a an old pirate ship and an old sub from a naval museum. Don't ask me how they managed to do it, but the Sub-Plunder was unleashed upon the world.

My third entry is The Charger Class Submarine

Although it has no torpedoes or guns on it, it is packed with hundreds of pounds of high explosives (C4 and the like) and remote controlled into an enemy vessel.

Weapons: Selfdestruct. The sub is packed with explosives, with almost every last bit of armor hollowed out and filled in. Thus, there is no crew, and there is no need for crew, since the thing is remote-controlled via low-frequency radio into a ship and detonated.

Hull: One inch of steel.

Power: One overcharged generator. Power is fed into it from eight auxillary generators, spinning it up to a ridiculous speed and creating great power. This burns itself out after about an hour if it not turned down occasionally, and if it is not submerged in water, it burns out in only a few minutes.

Sensors: Active Sonar array, equipped on the nose. It only provides 180 degrees of coverage and only can use active sonar.

Blue, the entries can be made in ANY editor, including creature and space. Having it above the water line shouldn't be an issue. The key part is that it, more or less, looks like a viable submarine.

*Note: This sub is extremely detailed, but the thumbnail came out blurry despite having maximum visual settings on as usual. Editing and reuploading does not seem to resolve this issue. Perhaps this seemingly random but extremely frustrating issue can be resolved by Maxis in a future update... *Hint hint*

I saw a documentary about a deep submersible like this that used "inverted wings" to achieve depth. Because it didn't have ballast tanks, I think, it was able to withstand greater pressure. This is my fantasy concept using that idea for an underwater dive-bomber. The resemblance to a WWII plane is no accident.

I made my models mainly for cool looks and unique designs.

I have, over the past month, spent a great deal of time and effort as I built the [url=http://www.spore.com/sporepedia#qry=ssc-500357182249]McSubmarines Unlimited Sporecast[/url] pointing out to people that they needed both a link to and a picture of their creations in order to have their submarines entered into the challenge. This was not from a [i]"I know how to do this and you're doing it wrong"[/i] aire of superiority, but because I didn't want anyone to have their submarines not considered for the challenge because of a simple mistake. I pointed people to tutorials to teach them how to post images and links so often I was begining to feel as though I was spamming the thread, after all the rules clearly stated...

No one has ever contradicted me as I pointed out that you need a link and a pic or when I have said that you might be lucky as long as you have, at a very minimum, a link to your submarines Sporepedia detail page.

Then, today, after the contest is closed I see this post...

So it would seem that I have spent most of the past month wasting my time, it would have been nice if MC could have either said that earlier or not said the exact opposite in the rules then, maybe I could have used that time on something more constructive.

It also leads me to wonder which submarines were actually considered for the finals, as of my last place marker the [url=http://www.spore.com/sporepedia#qry=ssc-500357182249]McSubmarines Unlimited Sporecast[/url] had over 240 entries (with possibly a couple of dozen additional subs from the thread not included because they did not have valid links) yet a search of the Sporpedia for the [i]mclegendschallenge[/i] tag yielded only 119 submarines. Were the other 100+ considered?

Please, do not take this as a complaint against the submarines that were selected to be finalists, it is not, they are all wonderful creations and deserve to be there and I wish all of them luck in the voting.

But, I'm just some pompous know it all who gives invalid advice, so I guess I can't say that.

Surface: Three pairs of 30 mm repeating cannons for engaging air or sea targets. Twelve Vertical Launch Missiles capable of hitting land or sea targets. Twenty eight flares. Four are in the launchers, and 24 are ready to load. These jam enemy heat seeking missiles. The flares also explode in a cloud of chaff (strips of metal) to jam radar guided missiles. Several shoulder fired Anti-Air/Anti-Ship/Anti-Sub missiles. These are stored in the armory of the ship, and can be fired by the crew. They are not normally seen on the deck, since they are man-portable and brought up only when a target is in range.

Submerged: Twenty four 125mm active/passive/wire guided torpedoes. Eight are loaded in the tubes, sixteen are held in racks. Eight active torpedo countermeasures. These create a cloud of bubbles in the water, which active torpedoes (ones that are homing on by using sonar to ping targets and lock on to them) perceive as the actual target. Eight passive torpedo countermeasures. These emit a broad spectrum of noise to confuse passive torpedoes (which listen for sound of a specific ship that is targeted and homes in on it) into aiming at it instead of the submarine itself.

Either: Crystal-Boosted Laser. The coup de grace of the entire submarine, it can be fired while surfaced or submerged. It takes one minute to charge, but unleashes a beam capable of travelling almost indefinately on the surface, and dozens of miles underwater. It can punch through thick steel.

Power: Nuclear reactor. This is a quiet fuel source that never needs refueling.

Hull: 6 inches of composite steel. The armor is laid in sheets one each thick each. The sheets in the middle carry a strong electric current to detonate armor piercing weapons early to minimize damage. The hull also has an ATDN (Active Threat Detection and Neutralization) system, which uses very well concealed micro lasers to simply fry and torpedoes that get too close. Only if the lasers are offline or fail to work does the hull need to take a blow.

Sensors: 48 sonobuoys. These are laid in the water and collect either active or passive sonar data and relay it to the ship. Two Sonar Arrays, one port, one starboard. These two systems combined give 360 degrees of coverage, with both active and passive sonar. Active sonar is not very stealthy, since it sends out loud pings which are easily picked up. This is only used in time-critical situations. Most of the time, passive sonar listens for ships and submarines, and does not compromise stealth. Passive sonar can also be used to identify the general class of other ships by listening to the frequency of the sound. One radar mast. This simply sends out radio waves, which bounce off objects and reutrn, which gives a good idea of what is around them. However, as with active sonar, radar gives away the the direction in which the submarine is when the radio wave is picked up by an enemy's Electromagnetic Sensors. One EM Sensor. This picks up radio waves, but also is enhanced to give a description of the possible classes of an enemy ship. [/quote]

Dude, it's from 1966. Back when the cold war was hot. The USS George Washington was the first fleet ballistic missile submarine and carried 16 of these bad boys. The Polaris A-3 had a range of 2,500 nautical miles (4,631 km). The A-3 featured multiple (10-14) 600 kT nuclear re-entry vehicles (MRVs) which spread the warheads about a common target, with penetration aids to counter Soviet Anti-Ballistic Missile defenses. They say all it takes is one nuclear detenation to ruin your whole day. This puppy could drop enough to ruin 6 months.
