Are you always playing a woman or is every species in the galaxy a hermaphrodite?

So what do you think? Are you always playing a female of your species or were you gifted (as well as the universe) with all the parts needed to wrap the package...so to speak.

The Empire holds the Females and Males of its species in the same responsibility as the other. You will see a female member of the Chelkan Empire fighting along side a male member of the Chelkan Empire just as often as not.

I'm speaking more of that odd moment when no matter how many times I'm born I always end up laying the egg after the ceremony ;p.

Thank god I laid it when I did...considering how big it gets moments after I might of exploded.

Neither. Spores are asexual, though they do absorb genes from external sources to encourage "evolution". The mating process is only because a single parent is unable to properly form an egg by themselves.

Or to put it in non-layman's terms, the mating process consists of airborne hormonal exchange (indicated by hearts). The dance itself is decorative and serves no purpose other then pleasure/the dance serves as an incentive above the actual hormonal exchange to get two parents together. After the hormonal exchange, one designated parent will develope an egg and thus produce offspring; the parent requires sufficient levels of hormones to produce an egg, and this is not possible by themselves. It is important to note that no DNA exchange ever offurs, hence no impregnation is actually involved.

Of cause, this doesn't quite answer how tribe child-bearing works, but it's my opinion that by that time, the creature has figured how to induce egg-laying by themselves, though this has the unfortunate side effect of halting all further DNA mutations; pure asexual reproduction in the sense that all future generations are genetic clones of the original. On that note, that does mean that there's a slave-"queen" in every main hut, and every time we burn down a main hut, we're burning a creature alive...

The Chelkan Empire has both Male and Female genders. The Females carry eggs for approximately 90:00:00 sectons before they are placed in a Chelkan Incubator.

The extension of our last transmission burst is that we hold both genders to the same combative requirement.

In the Cell and Creature stages, from what I've seen, you always play as a female. The actual fertilization of the egg by the male happens off-camera while you're in the creator.

I suppose, though, that it's easy enough to claim that your own race is parthenogenic, hermaphroditic, or mates in a manner completely incomprehensible to modern biologists.

During the space stage...well, all that I could stomach of it...my first race had both a mixture of male and female comm operators. It was actually a pretty even split between the two genders. I'm not sure if that's significant, but it was nice to see.

The difference is that partying allows your creature to evolve for some reason. Once the partying stops, your creature is fixed for form permanently.

No the tribe members are just holding a male and female of their own species hostage in the hut. The hut actually has no door. The creatures are not allowed to stop mating ever, and to make sure they don't escape, they're tied together in a position that makes babies. Once your creatures reach that intelligence level, the mating dance in creature stage is a criminal act punishable by sacrifice. So tribe members kidnap a male and female of their own species, tie them into that baby creating position, and seal them into the hut. The other tribes mate in the same way, but mating is entirely optional for all tribe members. Anyway, give up on trying to see what happens in there, your tribe's chief did a great job of concealing it.

Actually the best discription of races in SPORE would be A sexual reproduction.

Often creatures that do this are Egg layers, and every generation is nearly exactly a clone of the last. However this often makes the population weak to viral infection as they will all have nearly the exact same resistance to it.

Which would explain why a eco disaster can wipe out an entire population of creatures.

You're still female since you're the one going to lay the egg on the next mating... and the next one... and the next one... and so forth... and so on... :mrgreen:

One could claim that in their species the male is the one who lays the eggs, but it doesn't matter to biology. By definition, the female is always the one who produces the egg.

i came up with an idea.
ok your creature is a hermaphrodite. To lay eggs it must absorb genes from others of the same species.it does it by laying an egg,and the other one injects its genes into it through a tube or somthing.thus,the egg is formed.

Hermaphrodite. All beings have the same equipment but a partner is required for mating. Sort of like earthworms.

I assumed my species were all hermaphrodites that like the disco techs. Either way, my last few species I played I decided that they would look females in the tribal/civilization/space stages. Why, because it's been proven the by the Japanese that you can combine two eggs to produce a fertile egg. Or at least with mice. Either way, that's my science reasoning behind it. Real reason, I like females.

You SPORE SPORE. Spore creatures mate, but it's censored in a manner that replaces it with dancing and hearts. [b][size=32]SPORE YOU EA!!! GO TO HELL!!![/size][/b] Censorship should be outlawed.

I saw it and those Willosaurs cuddling up to each other, THAT WAS FREAKING ADORABLE! Why can't we see creatures cuddle in 2008 Spore? The only thing left of it is when a baby creature's parent tries to snuggle, but some invisible force is keeping the baby too far away. I'd also like to just watch the female creature lay an egg. And see some sexual dimorphism. EA probably called all of these things too cute, and removed it. If we spam EA with emails showing the part of the 2005 demo where the Willosaurs were cuddling, maybe they'll bring all this cute stuff back. People complain about how Spore is too cute, but really, it isn't cute enough. I'm pretty sure Will intended for the two Willosaurs to cuddle up to each other.

I agree, some sexual dimorphism would add to the creative side of the game. Maybe offer it as an option. As for other parts of the game, I think it would be nice to have different types of outfits for one race. I understand I can take a creature and outfit it multiple times, but I would like to see it done in a fashion where it isn't another Tribe/Civilization/Empire. Basically, have priest, warriors, scientist, engineers, workers, and so on. When talking with different colonies, the Player would see different outfits depending on what the theme of the colony is.

Well, I like to think that the other versions of my space creature are like the other nations in civ phase. And even one other species, which I made specifically as a female version of the Penguin. Then I plopped 'em on a planet with a little worm critter, and dropped a monolith on the Penguin's head. Did I mention that my archetype at the time was Bard? Too bad they were so far away from my empire. That would have been cool.

"Ok, close enough."
I also found the same Penguin in Creature Stage at one point.

No, by that time the creatures have evolved enough to be able to mate like we do now. The highest ranking (higher than the chief) creature of each gender stay in the tent, which is there so you can't see, and do it every time that you want a baby.

Yeah, I saw inside another tribe's hut, and all I saw was a baby sleeping. Then I kidnapped the baby and sacrificed it to the Penguin God of War. Sorry, it was time for a sacrifice. But maybe you're on to something. The Penguins mate in the same manner as Earth birds. It's awesome. But I still wanna see what happens inside MY hut, just for fun.

Dude, it's all a matter of perspective. You and I may say that they were having sex, but my little sister would say that they were cuddling. I knew what they were really doing, but I just wanted to wait for someone to bring that up.

I agree. It's kind of like some of the movies I watched as a kid. Movies like Monty Python and the Search for the Holy Grail, Murder By Death, Clue, and so on. There's a lot of jokes in there that I didn't get as a kid because of my perspective and understand of life was a bit limited. When I became an adult and watched these films again I recolonize a lot of subtle jokes about people's sexual natures. In fact, some more overt jokes about sex that went right over my head.

And that is why Players can come up with all these wonderful ways their species reproduce and what sex their species are.

Ok it's New Years Eve and still no new patch. Sorry for bumping this thread, but it had to be done. Well, since I've bumped this thread, I guess I should bring it to the attention of a developer that WE MUST HAVE SEXUAL DIMORPHISM!!! Sexual Dimorphism isn't gonna automatically mean sporn, it just means we'll know you care. Sporn will occur less often WHEN this feature is added.

I was playing creature stage, and one of my creatures had just laid an egg.
I clicked the mating call button, and guess who had hearts? The creature that laid the egg.
We did the dance, and [b]I[/b] laid an egg.

There are many examples of species with both sexual organs that mate with each other to produce off springs. In fact, it allows them to keep their genetic pool much larger.

one of my species produces sexually. Its just that the males of the species are so dimorphic that they exist as a parasite within the females, and the dance is what wakes the drive to produce an egg. So the scientists that discovered this world thought for the longest time that they were hermaphrodidic untill they zapped one up and dissected it.

actually I took the base idea for that off of a species of fish that the female is 50 times smaller than the male. it could happen for land creatures too!

I always assumed at first that I was the female because it seemed like my creature that I used laid the egg.

I don't think the male carries it to the nest because it seems like it well, lays it fresh.

also, why do we assume all creatures in the galaxy reproduce the same way we do? there a creatures on earth with different methods, and an alien planet would have NO relationship at all with our evolutionary path, with genes 100% different.

You would think the diversity of how Earth's creatures reproduce, it would be easy to understand that on an entirely different planet a different process could take place.

Uh, the camera switched to the other creature at the moment your creature started mating with it. So you were really watching the other one lay the egg.
