(GUIDE) Get Rich and Avoid Attacks in SPACE

This is a Guide for those who are having trouble getting rich in space stage. It also provides some strategy on how to avoid the constant annoying attacks.

Okay... to start off... KEYWORD (and quite an obvious one) = SPICE

LOTS AND LOTS OF SPICE

So how do you get them?

Exploration is key.
Fly around your neighboring star systems looking for a "CIVILIZATION" planet. That means a planet that has got a dominant species in the Civ stage. These planets will ALMOST ALWAYS be T3 (you want a T3 colony because it grants you 3 colony slots which mean more spice).

(Keep in mind, when selecting your new planet, the Spice price chart: It goes Red, Yellow, Blue, Pink, Green, and Purple, with Red being the cheapest and Purple the most expensive (and rarest))

EDIT:
There is an "easy" abeit time-consuming way of getting a good colony, with good spice, close to your home planet. If you haven't visited a star system you can: 1) save your game, 2) visit the star system, 3) IF you believe the spices/planets within aren't that good, Exit to the Main Menu (without saving), 4) Reload your game, 5) Re-visit the star system again, 6) Repeat until you think you've got a good planet/spice configuration.
PS: Blue stars have the best spice (Blue, Green, Pink, Purple). Red stars usually only have Red and Yellow.

(credit: elavals)
(this has been confirmed by me... if only I knew this before...)

The objective here is to conquer this T3 planet and colonize it.

How?

If your ship has any set of "Bomb" ability (mini bomb and so on) this chore will be extremely easy.
If it doesn't, then I'm going to assume you at least have a "Laser" ability.

Hover over a city, any city, and start bombing or laser-ing that city's City Hall. Adjust your ships height so that the city's defenses can't touch you but you can keep firing down.

Sooner than later the city will turn into dust.

Keep doing this to the other cities in the planet until you have conquered everything. Take trips back to your home planet to refuel and repair between attacking one city and another if you feel it's necessary. And always try to take out cities that belong to different factions and not the same one.

Okay. So now that you've conquered your T3 planet and built 3 colonies in it with the optimum production/happiness setting (refer to screenshot), it's time to TRADE until you get amazingly bored (and/or rich). Your planet should be producing around 20 spice units – should be 30 with the spice storage upgrade.

Optimal Setting:
EDIT: 132 Production, +2 Happiness

(credit: JohnnyPie)

Find a trading partner near your new planet.
Look around your galaxy for a group of star systems that do not have easy access to the spice you're producing. That's where your best chances of finding a great deal lies.
Establishing trade routes between your planets and your allies DOES NOT help this cause. You will only be providing your spices for free (and getting theirs in return, but the benefit is minimal).

When selling your spice, you should already have a basis on the difference between getting ripped off on a deal and hitting the jackpot.

If you don't, this might help you out:
EDIT:
Red Spice:
Jackpot >> Anything upwards of $10000/u
Highest seen: $17000

Yellow Spice:
Jackpot >> Anything upwards of $15000/u
Highest seen: $22000

Blue Spice:
Jackpot >> Anything upwards of $22000/u
Highest seen: $26000

Pink Spice:
Jackpot >> Anything upwards of $30000/u
Highest I've seen: $54000
Highest seen: $56000

Green Spice:
Jackpot >> Anything upwards of $37000/u
Highest seen: $50600

Purple Spice:
Jackpot >> Anything upwards of $45000/u
Highest I’ve seen: $64000
Highest seen: $74500

(credit: defektiv, ryxeuclie, neunzehnisbest)

The Amazing Purple Money:

Now, I suggest selling in stacks of 99 always (that’s the max).
There’s a reason for this:
Your buyer won’t have the same demand for that color spice after you’ve sold a bunch of units, and so it’s best to sell in bunches of 99 to maximize profits and take advantage of his already high demand.
EDIT:
It has been reported by some players that selling in bunches of 30 or so is easier. Apparently it is easier to find buyers that will purchase your spice for more cash when you're selling in bunches of 30. That way you can sell 30, get 30 more, find another buyer easily, sell again, repeat.
I still believe though that selling in stacks of 99 is better; there may be less buyers out there with a good price, but once you find them it gets easier than selling in smaller stacks.

If you follow the aforementioned chart, you should be earning upwards of 1 million sporebucks per sale.

That’s in less than an hour of play if you’re selling Red spice and mere minutes if you’re selling Purple spice.

Selling The Pink:

A couple of additional pointers:

1)	Artifacts are dumb and worthless. Sell them. They take up too much space and don’t go up much in value when you find another that belongs to the same set. They aren’t worth trying to complete.
2)	When conquering/colonizing an enemy Space-Stage T3 planet, NEVER bribe an ally to help you… UNLESS it’s absolutely necessary. Why? Because if you convert the planet’s cities instead of destroying them (you will see a white flag above the hall), you can end up with a planet that has a lot more than 3 colonies… which leads to a LOT more spice for you. If you send your allies to help you out, there’s a very high risk that THEY will colonize the planet (and its colonies) and keep the spice for themselves.

Conquered Planet (40 Spice Capacity):

3)	Your home planet is worthless. There, I said it. Now, let it rot, really. Who cares if it’s getting invaded? It gives you so little spice it’s almost not worth having. Go back in there when you feel like repairing your ONE colony (there’s no point in having more than one colony in your home planet… let the others die). Repairing your home planet is cheap anyway.
4)	ALWAYS purchase spice from other species. They SELL FOR CHEAP. You can resell later for a lot more cash.

Avoiding getting raided every SECOND (my GOD how annoying this is):

First of all, I’m a carnivore, so I kill things right?
Well, yes, but oh… NOT IN SPACE.

Don’t make the same mistake I did when starting out.
I didn’t care about enemies, I wanted them dead.

Well, if you want to be attacked every second (okay, minute…) then that’s fine.
If you don’t however, you need to make ALLIES. Lots and lots of allies.

And creating alliances is easy. Just bribe them if you have the money, or complete missions for them if you’re poor.

If you already have enemies, the only way to get rid of the constant stupid attacks is to obliterate them.
It doesn’t matter if they only have one T0 planet in their empire, they will still bother you until you’ve dealt the finishing blow.

Killing them off though will be VERY HARD if you:
A) Don’t have money
B) Don’t have allies
C) Don’t have a good group of ships next to yours
D) Have a Starter’s spaceship with minimal upgrades.

However if the reasons above don’t apply to you, killing your enemies is easy.
Simply bribe your allies into attacking the enemies planets (avoid their capital… reason why was mentioned above).
Now take your small fleet to the planet you sent your allies to.
When you get there, ignore the enemy’s ships (they might be busy fighting your ally’s forces anyway) and focus on bombing the city’s hall. The enemy ships will flee when you destroy the city hall and the planet will be empty.
Do this to every small planet your enemy has, until you leave him with his capital. THEN attack the capital.

When you are left with no enemies, you will enjoy a time of PEACE (PAX ROMA-SPOREANA if you will…).
Well, mostly.
You will still need to save planets from eco disaster (but that happens like every half hour) and you’ll have some pirate raids (but they only steal some spice, so it’s okay not to care…) BUT you won’t have aliens attacking anything.

WHEN YOU GET RICH (and believe me, you will), invest in a little thing called UBER TURRET… It’s such an amazing thing… I love it, and always have like 7 or 8 of them with me.

Drop one of those on every planet you got a colony on and you will never have to defend it from anything EVER AGAIN. You won’t lose a SINGLE building.

Also, don’t buy those super Planet Bombs… You won’t need them. They’re expensive and by the time you unlock them, you’ll be powerful enough to colonize any enemy planet.

Have Fun

Additional pointless info:

EDIT:
Apparently, there is a money cap set to $99,999,999
So... no becoming a Billionsporinaire oh well...
(credit: stilldamom)

I play Spore on Hard… don’t know how much that influences this guide... It only means my spaceship has 2250 HP maxed out (against 9000+ in easier difficulty settings)... but other then that I think it makes no difference.

The buildings and the Zebra/Bee/Dog/Bird creature called Plukmen, along with its vehicles (spaceship, water, land, air) were all created by me.

The Buildings are part of a Chess-Set inspired pack and are available for download at my spore page.

I stopped following this “guide” after reaching 60 million sporebucks because I got very bored and wanted to explore (plus, there’s no way you can burn that much money in this game unless you buy a million Planet Bombs or purchase a bunch of systems – which I don’t recommend).

LINKS
My Spore Profile:
http://www.spore.com/view/profile/lucas182

doyoureadthis' Guide to the Galaxy
http://forum.spore.com/jforum/posts/list/3071.page

Thank you... I felt I needed to write this cause I (like many many others) was having so much trouble in Space with the attacks and the constant lack of money... only to realise just how easy this game really is. I mean, creature, tribe, cell and civ stage are, in a way, so easy that they don't prepare you for space.

Hopefully ppl will think twice before putting Spore on the shelf and waiting for a patch (I did)... the game is pretty fun

There is an easy way to get good spice close to home. White stars tend to have a higer rate of having purple pink and blue. If u save then fly to one and it has nothing good just exit to main menu and reload. Most star systems have random planets the first time u visit, so u can just save and reload to rerandomize the star system. I did this to get 3 planets near my home planet which added to a total of 6 blue spice planets, 5 pink spice planets, and 3 purple spice planets. Same applies to a lot of things in space, if u lose a planet to pirates just reload and most likely they will never even visit that planet again.

Re:(GUIDE) Get Rich and Avoid Attacks in SPACE

For the most part the guide is pretty good, however, I have done things a little bit differently and made a lot of money and a lot of friends.

I never fight with anyone, except pirates. I have 5 allied ships that follow me around and take out anything that bothers me. Biggest tip is make love, not war.

A few other tips, when setting up trade routes, try to make them with planets that have decent spices, ie; purple, green and pink. Then when they are tired of trading with you, you buy the system and voila! You have the perfect spice planet already set up. I don't usually care if it's T1 or not. It's not that hard to transform them once you get all the tools. Also, sometimes I even just do trade routes if I know they have a decent colot spice planet, whether transformed or not. Buying the system is always the best answer. If they get tired of trading with you and it's not a decent color spice, just end the trade route and make another with the same faction. Also, if you bid too low and want the system, end the trade route and start it back up, then buy it when they are tired, for a better offer.

Another thing I would suggest is NOT selling in batches of 99 as they tend to pay less for more. I usually sell in about 35-50 lots. The pay is higher and it's less work, more money, faster. I made over 60 mil in 2 days just goofing off and experimenting with terraforming.

Most important! Have fun! It's just a game...

Hope this helps!

But they're not supposed to be that great, since they're so easily obtainable. Allied ships are meat shields really. If you think about it, your ship also sucks, especially in the beginning. The allied ships job is to take attention off you, so you dont die.

The biggest advantage of having allied ships, i think, is that when you go to a system zoomed out, enemy ships attack you, but you cant attack them. The allied ships take care of them for you. Also, when you're searching for an artifact on a yellow hue-ed planet, but get caught by pirates, the easiest way to kill them is to zoom back out and let your allies kill the pirate ships in the zoomed out view.

Also, losing your allies' ships wont lose you that much favor. just like abducting their citizens and stealing artifacts from their planets, it shouldn't stop you from using their services.
One other way to conquer a planet with a civ littered all over it is with planet creation tools. (Meteors/atmosphere tools) If you got the money, drop a few meteors on the planet, wait for it to go from T3 to T0 and everything dies. Then do the reverse to get it back to T3. Saves time having to go back and forth to home planet for repairs.
thats an alternate way. but if you think about it, by the time you get the advanced tools, you may have probably already unlocked the Mega Bomb (upgraded Mini Bomb). 3 drops on the city hall destroys a city. You have now increased standings, gained a useful planet, and expanded your empire without combat, and very little effort.

STANDINGS with HOSTILES. You need to get a hostile race on your side. Go to a T0 planet of theirs, and make it T3, they will love you after. A very quick way of incresing standings. Do this to a couple of planets, the go from -100 -> 100 in a very short time. If you have the abilities, this is also a very cheap way to do it.

I try to avoid calling for allied help when storming T3 planets (for the reasons stated in the guide).

my biggest mistake with my first race (which I never intended to play for a very very long time) was I went militaristic right off the bat; I just out and out started attacking my neighbors. The end result was that it took me forever to buy stuff, forever to have some good allies (and have peace), and my spice trade was pathetically behind.

I started over (with a creature/race that I wanted...this was the one I was going to play seriously), and went economic...it was crazy how fast I was able to buy tools and items...I was a bit hindered because of the spice my neighbors wanted, but my establishment throughout the area was a lot quicker.

I agree completely; if you want to go militaristic, establish trade routes and allies in your area first, then, once you've purchased most of the weapons, and have some decent allies, then go for it.

If your empire is big enough you won't have enough time in the universe to collect it all in a timely fashion. You can play with this set up but start with this layout and play around with it. You will find the best mechanism for all production no happiness to my setting all based on this layout in my photo.

I'd say that once you have 3 allied ships flying with you, switch from paying the zealot extortionist empires to destroying them. If you make friends fast enough, the demands should stay under 2mil. You should be making enough off of trading spice by then to afford 2 extortionists at a time. Once they start going over, go explore their systems and find their homeworld before they get too hostile. Taking over homeworlds rock. I'd say usually it's cheaper to start trading w/ another race's empire to take their homeworlds. Then u get high volume production. If you battle for those planets u risk loosing some cities. Most hostile races will cease hostilities for a bit if you take their homeworld right away.

Once I had 5 allied ships I switched to putting the super turret on all planets as I created colonies or took them over. Then I started putting in the eco friendly colony tools for added tranquility. Pumping up planets to T3 or colonizing 2 planets per system is a good way to keep solar systems in your control even if you don't always go bail em out from attacks.

PS - don't try and befriend the Grox by terraforming their planets for them. It may backfire if you raise the T score. I'm out of time. I must get back to my 10 billion year war I just started w/ the Grox. Luckily I can pause the game and go to sleep when I have to.

Another thing I would suggest is NOT selling in batches of 99 as they tend to pay less for more. I usually sell in about 35-50 lots. The pay is higher and it's less work, more money, faster. I made over 60 mil in 2 days just goofing off and experimenting with terraforming.
hmmm
can you confirm this? cuz im pretty 110% sure that whenever you sell lets say 30 units of spice to a planet, its buying price will then significantly drop for that same color spice (when you try to sell it again).
Thus selling 99 at once while the price is still high would make sense.

I dunno, it's simple economics really.
I can confirm this. When selling to a single planet, the chances of them buying a spice for more increases greatly when you don't have that much spice in your inventory. For example, if you had 30 purple spice, then most planets that you go to will buy it for good amounts (30 - 50k).
But if you have a whole bunch of spice, like 80+, then you have to search all over just to find someone that won't pay the minimum... Yes, it's quite possible to go around with 99 spice and find a buyer who will pay max price. What this mate is saying is that it's much easier to sell in groups of 30 or so to multiple planets so that way you'll always get a decent rate for your spice without having to fly across the galaxy just to sell one load.

(GUIDE) Get Rich and Avoid Attacks in SPACE

For crushing enemies I've noticed that on EVERY planet EXCEPT the Home planet, the fastest way is to get your Laser equipped (Mega-Laser preferred but any will do), and fly straight to the first Colony and laser the City Hall. Don't let anything else distract you.

If the planet has just the 1 Colony you will either Capture or destroy in seconds. If you Capture, all the planet's ships suddenly give up on you, including giving you safe passage home! Unfortunately destroying the city causes half the ships to give up and the other half to keep at it. At that point you can either back up and stay just out of range of their missiles while you missile them, then come back for the loot the dead city left behind, or you can run for it, FAST.

For whatever reason, Home planets are the only time this doesn't work. You need to break their spirits by bombing a little, then go in with the laser. Try to isolate your bombs to one half or one quarter of the city (target that section) so that if you Capture the city, you have more structures to work with in rebuilding. You DON'T need to bomb it to death - just drop enough bombs to break their spirits then laser the City Hall and it's yours.

Re:(GUIDE) Get Rich and Avoid Attacks in SPACE

what i do is i keep one of each spice as a guide to know which star wants what and for how much then i gather it until 99 spice and i sell all of it but the one "standard" spice that i use to check prices, since each planet wants to buy three planets and they dont buy other three spices. it is good to keep one of each, even if it takes up some of your cargo, or do this once you have the large cargo hold so you still have room for your terraforming and artifacts.

another tip that i use is once my planet has a T3 score i give it the spice harvest box so that my planets make 30 spice instead of just 15 and i guard all my planets with the uber turrent so that i still have some time to defend going from place to place.

another stupid mistake i found was dont laser your artifacts or you lose them. i did this on accident while trying to save a planet from an ecodisaster [yah it was a stupid mistake but it was better then my friend blowing up his own city in civilization]

hope this helps any one it is just what i use to scout for space spice.

I have a different best setting for colonies in the space phase.

Full happy faces w/ 144.00 an hour.
I tried your colony config and only got +96/hour. Not sure how you got +144/hour.

The config I have been using yields +132/hour with 2 Happiness:
Your setup doesn't mix up your buildings very well. I've found another set up that gets 144.0 and full happiness with no redlines as well. I found it on one of my colonies I set up early on in game. I'll try and find and post a picture.

Note - 5 houses, 3 factories, 3 entertainment. don't let any entertainment or factory sit next to another of its own type is first rule for more production. Only let 2 entertainment and factories share 1 connection. Make other factory and other entertainment have 2 houses on both connecting legs.

The other important point on production is connecting factories and entertainment to the city hall. This is probably where you loose points having the 2 entertainment places sharing a leg and only one of them shares a leg with city hall. You can get 160 w/ 2 happy faces if you play with my setup. You can get even more spice w/ no happy faces based off of my template in the photo. That's why i included the left side so you can clearly identify my buildings.

(GUIDE) Get Rich and Avoid Attacks in SPACE

tip for layout: the spot to the right of the main courtyard (gold circle) has four connections. put a factory there! put a house on the other side of the courtyard (connecting to that factory). then put an entertainment in the next slot (also on other side of courtyard, working around clockwise) next to the city on the other side of the house. put a couple more factories on the leftover slots next to city hall. then just fill up the remaining empty slots with houses. so far, this has seemed to be the best setup, while still keeping some happiness. [i can put up a screenshot if anybody has trouble following this]

i think though that your game difficulty setting and your race's trait affects what that total number will be. haven't played as a trader, but I think they probably will produce more using the same layout.

since there doesn't seem to be celebration like in civ stage that doubles production, is there even any point to keeping them happy anymore? has anybody seen any direct impact of red faces? will they turn against you and start attacking your other colonies every 3 seconds?

very good guide, but i'd like to change one thing. when it comes to civ stage planets, if they have like purple or green spice, DO NOT conquer them by destroying. instead, wait, get a monolith, evolve them and then conquer. that way you can make them surrender without destroying their cities, giving you a planet with 5-10 cities =D

belive me, it is really worth the wait. i captured a 10 city (well, i accidentally destroyed one, so 9 cities) purple spice planet, and got rich in mere hours =D

ps:get a spice tank (or whatever it's called), it doubles the maximum spice limit, so, like in my case, it goes from 45 to 90, that sold can give a whooping 6 million + bucks

I discovered a glitch that can give you a lot of spice but some might view it as cheating.

To do it go to one of your planets preferably one with high value spice and high spice storage. drop a crate of spice on the planet (any amount will do but putting too much might lower the amount you get back the first time). Buy the spice back then abduct the crate which is still on the ground, and voila you just got a bunch of free spice!

You can do this as many times as you like. You can also do this on alien planets but they view it as stealing.

(GUIDE) Get Rich and Avoid Attacks in SPACE

This will be SO helpful to me.

I've played Space on two games so far, and on both, I had no money and was at war with 1-2 other civilizations. D:

And I didn't even start the wars. I made allies, and all of a sudden another civilization attacked them, so I defended them, and the next thing I knew, I was in a war. And every 2 minutes there would be raids of about 10 enemy ships, and I would be shot down in literally 7 seconds.

I think I will try the Space stage again after reading this.

I stopped following this “guide” after reaching 60 million sporebucks because I got very bored and wanted to explore (plus, there’s no way you can burn that much money in this game unless you buy a million Planet Bombs or purchase a bunch of systems – which I don’t recommend).

or just use the cheat more money

LINKS
My Spore Profile:
http://www.spore.com/view/profile/lucas182

doyoureadthis' Guide to the Galaxy
http://forum.spore.com/jforum/posts/list/3071.page
First of all, Shneo, that's called CHEATING. if you CHEAT, you can't get ACHIEVEMENTS.

Second, I have found an interesting way of putting this to use, not sure if its already been posted though. Find a wormhole that leads to a place that has red spice planets that are easily colonized. colonize ONE T-0 RED SPICE planet, and just leave the colony there (uber-turret it if you want, but its not really necessary). Make sure there aren't planets with any other kind of spice, except maybe yellow. On the other side of the wormhole, colonize a bunch of purple-spice planets, 4 or 5 should do, and make them all T-3, 3 colony planets, following the building guide provided in the original post. Add spice storage and uber-turret, and anything else you want (happiness booster is a waste in this case). Gather all the spice from your purple spice colonies until you have 99, then head across the wormhole to the t0 colony you placed, making sure its the ONLY colony around for.... many many parsecs. They'll probably be buying the spice for a very HIGH price, and their price doesn't tend to change much. This worked for me, and I have a lot of money now.
EDIT: After a few sells, the price does go down. my bad. Just destroy the colony and set up a new one. You may have to find a new wormhole. Either that or sell them to other empires for a while.
the easiest way for me to get rich is just go to planets with creatures in the civ stage and steal their spice go out do a quest or two then come back and repeat it may not be as good as the first but it works I like to call this taxing.
The only problem with this method is that when they become sentient they are instantly your enemy because you stole from them. The work around to this is to place a crop circle on the planet when you are done but then I wouldn't recommend stealing any more spice from them. When the reach sentience they shouldn't be angry with you but making an ally of them will be difficult.
