My pack consisted of me and three Rogue creatures I had befriended for some good firepower to try to take one down (all pretty much max level).

I got it down from about 1000 hp to, oh, 700 or so.
I haven't tried it myself, but it is mentioned in the Prima strategy guide (yeah, I went out and bought it - gives me something to read between classes ). They suggest using a spitter weapon to keep hitting it from a distance. Also be sure to have a full pack, and try to include a Rogue creature in your pack as well, as they are more powerful than normal allies. These are the ones seen occasionally running about alone. Like I said, I haven't done it, so I'd love to hear if anyone has succeeded in this and if the "official" strategy works.

"Kill an epic in creature stage" your kidding right?

I tried a stand-up fight with three rogues in my pack, and it still didn't work. (700-800 hp left, usually)
I noticed that this particular epic at least would occasionally go over to a nearby nest and pick up a creature. While holding the creature, it won't attack. So I and my pack waited for it to pick something up, then charged in. We got it to about 500 before it threw what it was holding and 1 or 2 shot my rogue buddies.

So yes, spitting with a herbivore/omnivore is about the only reliable way to take one down. It is also possible to use level 5 jump/glide to get above it and start attacking then get away repeatedly (sneak helps) but as it's possible for epics to one-shot you while you're about 15 feet above them, this is fail-prone.

Yes, a lot of people, including me, have killed epics. I killed my first by drawing it to another epic (or more accurately, I ran like a bat out of the location with much fire and brimstone, and ended up near another epic, where I went "OH ^&*#!"), and the two of them got into a fight over which got to eat me, which resulted in the Brekin being killed by the Veloceraptor, and the Veloceraptor having only 100 health. I then proceeded to Spit 5 it to death.

Sprinting backwards is also faster than an epic on foot, though I think jumping/gliding epics may be fast enough to catch a sprinting backwards creature. Because epics never seem to ever detect stealth, you can safely feast on bushes near them if you can't find any nearby... so long as there aren't any other meddlesome busybody creatures. (there's a big lumbering epic, and you want to reveal who's that guy distracting it?)
Well I was just scrolling trough the achievements in Spore and I came across this one,
"Epic Killer.
Kill an epic in creature stage"
Has anyone managed to achieve this one and how did you go about it?

I've killed an epic in the tribe, civ and space stages, but creature? I didn't even think you could do damage to them in creature stage.
I did it totally by accident the other day. There was a big flying blue one that had been terrorizing my nest since I started creature. His path passed our nest at least 2 times in his rounds. On one of the passes, for some reason, none of my guys died while we were fighting him. So after I spawned again, I ran in behind him, and started in with everything I had. Took about 3-4 minutes (I think). I would imagine if you had access to a full pack of ally or random critters in your pack, and a nest full of NPC's you could do it significantly faster.

You actually don't even need terrain to block the epic if you decide to take it down with a spitting attack. All you have to do is:

1. Go solo! (your posse will just rile the big lug up and get killed, and then it will come after you!)

2. Approach from a distance, and spit. You will automatically start spitting at the maximum distance.

3. Make sure you are an omnivore or herbivore, and make sure there is a food plant nearby (but farther from the Epic than you are). When you get hungry, just turn around and take a nibble.

4. Keep doing this for like a half-hour or so, and the Epic will fall.

If you keep spitting from max distance, the Epic will not chase you. He'll just stand there and take the beating. He won't run away either, as long as you keep spitting at him.

BTW, people have said that you should have the ability to fly in order to take down an Epic. While not exactly true, it is hilarious to see an epic snatch you out of the air and toss you around! (you don't automatically die, the way you do if the Epic stomps on you)

All but 1 of the epics I've ran across could one-shot Rogue creatures. The other was a herbavore, and it took 2 or 3 tops hits to kill a Rogue, if I recall.

Seems to me overall, either you kill a deliberately weak epic critter, or exploited some kind of pathing/stuck issue - essentially didn't really kill it so much as exploit something. How could you otherwise kill something that seems to not even really have to hit you, just kinda twitch in your general direction. I've pounded on one with a powerful group while it was attacking another nest and it was still no contest.. Standing out of reach and using spit for an hour doesn't seem like it's a worthy way to win either.

Re:"Kill an epic in creature stage" your kidding right?

My Sligamede were specifically engineered to take down an epic, and succeeded.

Key stats for this:

Spit 5 - Spit may not look like it hits for much, but it's a DoT attack. Those little ticks of health really add up, as long as the epic doesn't get to feed
Stealth 5 - So you've been backed into a wall, the Epic is furious at you, and wants to tear your scrawny neck off? Just tap the Z key and run for it. Stealth 5 is ONLY available from feet. As such, the Sligamede has been given 5 legs, 2 of them paired. The hind feet provide this level of stealth.
Jump 5 and Glide 5 - Jump 5 comes from the most advanced of the frog feet, so I added a lone leg just for this ability. Combined with Glide 5, you can remain aloft for very long stretches of time. At the same time, you can spit at the epic from flight, avoiding any sort of reprisal the epic may have in mind
Speed 5 - Sometimes you just have to make a lot of distance between yourself and the epic, With speed 5, you can back off continuously, so long as you don't run into a wall
Herbivore (or Omnivore) - Fight in an area abundant with fruit. When you get hungry, hit stealth and grab a quick meal, but don't take too long or the epic will go find something to munch on and heal as well!

Pick your epic victim WISELY! Flying epics are a royal pain to actually take down, because they'll often resort to their incredible flight abilities to run off if they're stuck in a losing battle. Stick with a grounded epic if you can help it. While you may be able to run through the entire creature stage without seeing even a single epic, I've found there are often several on your continent if you take the time to go looking for them.

Fighting unfair: Maybe it was just luck for me, but the epic I took down was incredibly lazy. So lazy, in fact, that it didn't feel like trying to claw over some tiny little foothills to fight back. I ended up trapping him behind a tree on a sharp peninsula at around 300 HP left. It was then just a matter of spitting my little heart out until he finally fell over.

Too bad I was an herbivore, though. Bananagrinz may have "banana" in his name, but a fruit he is not! *vomits*

Re:"Kill an epic in creature stage" your kidding right?

I've pretty much killed at least one epic in creature stage with every creature that I've played. I've killed 5 of them in one creature stage! Most strageties listed here work. Leading it to your home nest is the best chance (and the fastest). If you see an epic, and there is a nearby nest of your pack, go make that nearby nest your home nest (if you hold the cursor over the nest, you'll see the icon turn to a little house, and then click on it to change your home nest). Then drag the creature to your home nest (spitting from distance is the best way, but you CAN just get near enough to him that he sees you, and then run). The other pack mates at your nest can act as a moving wall, and if you die, just pound the out of the escape key so you respawn before the epic runs off (or worse yet, heals). If you are an omnivore and can summon flock, use this repeatedly (it'll recharge every time you die). BUT, if you lead the creature to your home nest, make sure to save often during the battle, and especially when the epic is low on hit points (zoom out to see his health bar). If you don't get credit because a nest member killed him, reload.

Getting the epic trapped on stuff and killing him with spit is the surest way to get credit. Even with a level 5 spit, it can take thirty minutes. Most of your maps will have monoliths (like Stonehenge) where you can get inside and he can't ever get in.

Oh, if you have used any cheats prior to this point, you probably won't get the badge. You big cheater.

Demonbuddy

Here is me and my Mavinko killing an epic (BTW Mavinko is not yet in Sporepedia). You just need a spiting creature and find a way to make the epic don't approach you, you can do this by fleeing to the wierd shaped stones (you know, those who are not normal stones) and the epic can't come close enough to kill you. I heard some people did this with trees too, so it may work that way. It is incredible that you only get 100 dna points for killing it.

When the image freezes I was saving, as I didn't know if my creature would die by starving before I kill it.
Re:"Kill an epic in creature stage" your kidding right?

LOL, i like that "AI fails utterly", but that's not quite true. In creature stage, you don't have enough options to form a solid stragety to beat the epic. In tribal stage, you can use mixed units to kill an epic with few losses. Run in your chief and other melee troops to attack the epic, while ranged (throwing spear) troops pepper him with attacks. When the epic goes after the melee troops, back them away with covering fire from the ranged troops. If the epic goes after the ranged troops, charge him with the melee troops. The combined tactics make a simple, yet tactful and believable, stragety to fighting a much stronger foe.

On creature stage, the only strageties are using unpassable terrain with spit attacks (a believable, yet cumbersome and time-consuming stragety) or taking advantage of infinite respawns at your home nest (a more obvious use of programmed dynamics). More options (like charming the epic and leading him to another epic, a nest of aggressive creatures, or into deep water where he drowns) would allow more stragety, but those options aren't available. So, you have to cheat the system, because the system has limited dynamics.

Demonbuddy

I killed one at level = hard. I lured it to my home nest, where everyone started attacking. Every time the epic tries to leave one of my nestmates would attack and the epic would return and try to fight again. I ended up just sat next to a fruit tree nearby and watch. It did take a LONG time and I lost 3 of my herd in the process (so we WERE taking damage), but when it toppled, thats where it landed. By the look of it, I think it's got quite low attack stats, which also helps explain why we weren't just slaughtered as usually happens. I have a strong feeling it's also because it was right next to my nest that we were able to do it, but I can't really confirm that. As I said, I lost 3 herd members in the attack, so we weren't invincible and bugging, but perhaps the nest auto-heal had something to do with it?

I would have the spraypalm because it has both spit and health. Try and get in some thick trees or find some of those huge rocks. also it helps if you have some rouge allies with the same spit abilitie

I've never done this or ever will because it sounds like suicide.
The epic creatures are determined randomly, just like the other creatures. As with all creatures, the game will use your own creations and the creations of friends more often in the random pool. It seems to lean more towards omnivores for Rogue creatures, and more towards carnivores for Epic creatures (this might even be a rule, i don't know).

If an epic is being particularly um evil in your game, you could save, exit to main menu, go to your downloads, and delete the creature from your game. Then it will get replaced randomly. I had an epic tarantula outside one of my cities on Civilization mode that kept "spitting" all of my economic vehicles into dissolved puddles of goo. Their economic setting meant that they couldn't fight the epic, and the spit of the epic meant they couldn't even drive past it. Eventually, I purchased a religious city, and left it as religious so I could create religious vehicles to charm the spider and lead it to an opposing city. I really wanted to delete the spider cuz it was such a pain, but it was so well designed that I also didn't want it deleted, yanno?

Demonbuddy

Re:"Kill an epic in creature stage" your kidding right?

I've killed 6 Epic's to date (out of 17 creature phase games) - 3 of them were fairly close to my creature's home nest so weren't too tricky to entice back, the other 3 spawned right by the nest when I exited the Creature Creator. 2 showed up in the same game - it seems to be a matter of luck/randomness!

In general I'd say visit your home nest often and save just before you go into battle. If you kill it but don't get the badge you can always load up your save, repeat it and you *may* get it on the second try.

If your creatures have low attack abilities it can take quite a while, but they don't seem to starve to death if they're in their own nest. They do however get disorientated and complain about being hungry so the thing does take a lot longer. Even so it's in the ballpark of 2-10 minutes to take down a medium or small health Epic, it's not hugely difficult, more repetitive!
There's no way to guarantee that your creature gets the last swipe unless your pack members have wandered outside the nest's protective area and gotten themselves killed - seems a bit retarded that the posse kill doesn't count as *your* kill since it's your posse, but that seems to be the requirement. Your controlled creature must be the one that makes the kill.

Re:"Kill an epic in creature stage" your kidding right?

No no no... there is ANOTHER trick to the home nest that you guys are missing. Non-aggressive nest members (in other words, potential mates) act as a moving wall! If the epic can not fly and does not spit (most epics on creature stage seem to not use spit, or maybe I've just gotten the luck of the draw), you can get the epic *stuck* on your mate. When I fight the epic at my nest, I constantly hit the "mate" button. This spawns a non-aggressive nest member. This non-aggressive member will not attack the epic, so will not help in the battle... but the epic creature can not go through the mate. Sometimes, it even looks like the epic attacks the mate, but since the mate is non-aggressive, the epic does no damage (this could be a visual thing and not reality). But I have definitely killed an epic, without cheats (and i have never even downloaded a mod) in my home nest with zero or very few deaths. Nine times out of ten, the epic DOES figure out how to get around the "potential mate" wall and one-touch kill you. But it can get stuck on them!!!

Demonbuddy

Re:"Kill an epic in creature stage" your kidding right?

It's a fair question, because it's a game in development. "Bad Baby" is an achievement that is now gone from the game. Other achievements are just plain tricky. "Universe in a Box" requires you to use all creators, but there is a hidden creator: the spice harvester creation tool during the space stage. Even hint books don't answer all of the questions.

Sure, just assuming the achievement is impossible is pesimistic. A simple request for hints/advice without the claim that "it is impossible" should generate more responses... but look. Six pages of responses so far. Basically, most people (including me) are practically bragging about how they did the achievement. Because it was cool. This game doesn't *quite* capture the coolness feature of the first "Black & White", but it comes close. The first time that my tiger (an early epic???) pointed with wonder as my godly hand flung poo into the ocean, I slapped my forehead. Then, I laughed for twenty minutes.

Demonbuddy

I killed an epic because it looked really dumb, haha. So basically they one shot you, or did me, so I eveolved a creature to have +5 speed +5 jump +5 glide +5 spit. then it was a matter of not getting hit and spitting alot. Mind your "hunger" meter, it's gonna take a while and you may starve to death (hard setting). Omnivorous creatures and herbavores have an easier time of staying fed while in battle thanks to fruit laying around. Any how my strategy consisted of spit and fly away, but not too far, I did this for about 30 minutes and got him to about 700 health at that time i was attacked by other creatures and was hungry so my health was down to 50. so i kept spitting on him and tried to snare him in some rock formations at which point i mashed the spit button for 20 more minutes and he finally died. I was super annoyed when I found an even dumber looking epic later on that day.

No bugs or exploits!

http://www.spore.com/view/achievements/Bishop149

Wasn't lucky enough to have an epic spawn anywhere near my nest I was miles away before I found one. My creature has:

Level 5 Spit
Level 4 Stealth
Top level health.
Is an omnivore.

This is pretty much all you need to take down an epic but its pretty hard and takes a while.
When I first encountered the epic I had a full pack with me, I then also used the "Summon Flock" ability and sent them all to attack the epic whilst I hung back spitting. This knocked about 200-300 health off initially before they all died, not a bad start.

It was then pretty much run and spit, going into stealth when ever the epic got too close or I needed to feed (fruit).
When ever the "Summon Flock" ability had recharged I used it once again sent them to attack whilst spitting. This knocks about 80-100 off per go.
Rinse and repeat. . . . . I finished him off myself with spitting.

Tips:

I did it in an area that by chance I'd more or less cleansed of any other creatures, 5 extinct nests and only 2 live ones. This helps a lot as it minimises the epic's chances to feed (and restore health) and reduces interference form other creatures who might attack if you stray too close to their nest.

When the Epic's health drops below about 1/3 yellowy orange bubbles will appear above it head, from this point on it will try to get back to its nest to heal unless you keep it constantly occupied by attacking. DO NOT let it get back, if it does it will heal back to 1000 in a matter of seconds.

Once your pack/flock mates are dead try and lead the epic away from their bodies, if it looses interest in you when close to them it will eat and restore health.

When you need to feed lead the Epic towards a fruit bush and go into stealth. . . you can eat with the epic standing almost on top of you and remain undetected and unattacked

I'm not sure that the 'you cheated, you must be lying' approach to those who have succeeded this challenge and who are helpfully sharing their tips and experiences is called for. Why would someone lie about this - it's the work of moments to look up someone's profile online and see whether or not they've got the achievement listed!

On that point, if you cheat, you lose when it comes to achievements. The only plausible cheat that would make any difference AT ALL for this particular challenge would be the refill motives cheat because it would stop your creatures getting hungry BUT since an Epic can kill you with 1 single stomp/swipe/bite, it doesn't give you any attack or defense advantages. Since you can't enter the cheat after you are dead, it doesn't actually make killing the Epic any easier. There isn't (to my knowledge), a 'kill the Epic, but give me the achievement anyway' cheat.

Raddakar: Spice Harvesting Editor = Colony Vehicle Editor. In the Space phase, go into one of your Colony Cities, select the Vehicle Tab in the City Planner, create and save a new vehicle for any of the 3 types (land, sea or air) to check it off the 'Universe in a Box' achievement list.

After that the sound becomes delayed...

Edit: Actually this is not the final Mavinko I will upload to Sporepedia
whoa, i just came across the EXACT same epic you killed in the vid , without having any friends in my list... what a coincidence!

Re:"Kill an epic in creature stage" your kidding right?

this is hilarious.
how to kill an epic: get spit weapons, lure an epic close to big rocks formations, hide between those rocks, where he can't fit, and spit. higher spit levels shorten the time to kill him, wich is good because you don't starve to death. also make sure your food and health bars are almost (full). if you have the health maxed you can kill it even with a carnivore this way. and buddyes are not really required. oh, and some here said they didn't get the achievement. maybe they cheated the game.
epics kill you by stepping on you, that's why you get that "one shot" kill, because they're supposed to be heavy. if you don't actually see then stepping on you it is because of programming and the way 3d objects blemd, mix and collide in the game.
one single situation i ran into: the "p3n!s creature" epic, the blue one, wich is verry slow, grabbed me and threw me away. lost some hp, i think, but i didn't died and killed it after.
and a last note: i kiilled about 5 epics by now. i don't think i'll do it again, because is not such a big stuff. you get nothing instead of that achievement. it would've been something if killing 3 epics made you rogue creature, and then killing five made you an epic. or something like that. wich means achieving something in "real world", too, not just in stats.
I actually think it is clever and somewhat subtle how EA makes cheats have consequences. It's like the original "SimCity" money cheat, where the cash cheat (hmmm i forgot the actually code for that one but I remember SPAM SPAM SPAM) could randomly cause an earthquake. That earthquake could do more damage to your city than the extra cash would pay for... Genius.

Demonbuddy
Oh man, that one's old (like, 1991), but I still remember you had to hold down <SHIFT> while typing "funds"
And of course it would call an earthquake, but not if you had the game paused and save-reload it

Then again, now that we have nice forums, tutorials, guides & tips from all over the place, cheats become pretty useless because we can easily LEARN to master a game instead of banging our head on it or cheating.

On the other hand, wiping out as many Epics as you can in Creature Stage gives you a sense of invulnerability that I find lacking in later stages...

My best record for killing Epics in a single Creature Stage game is 6...

I killed my first epic the sissy way (spitting at it from a distance for about an hour). But now I just kite it to my nest and have my pack-mates attack it with me. About 50% of the time, it won't kill me or any of my pals, but the other 50% of the time it smacks me down. I think when it doesn't kill me or my posse it's because I have so many creatures attacking it at once that it doesn't have time to initiate an attack of its own, but I'm not sure. Anyway, if you lure it to your nest, and if you have enough creatures attacking it at once, you can easily defeat it within a couple minutes.

Re:"Kill an epic in creature stage" your kidding right?

Alright here's my advice.
First of all, I'm a relatively new player, so if you're new to the game, don't let the thought of some achievements scare you.
Killing an Epic is kind of easy and difficult at the same time.
The most tricky part, by far, is luring it back to your home nest. I've found that this is the most effective method and one of the only possible methods...xD.
Anyways. It's best to have a high speed, and the sprint ability. Also a level 5 Spit is necessary.
Slowly lure the epic back to your nest. If you have any sort of pack, they are usually useless because they run at the epic and die...
Oh, and try to find an Epic without the spit ability-so it's easier to lure and you don't die as much.
So!
Step 1- Lure the epic back towards your nest. This is the hardest part, and might take a while, but it's worth it.
You will need spit, sprint, a high speed and also sneak and Fly are VERY useful. You can use sneak to get close and attack it with spit, and you can use sprint and fly to suddenly run or fly away in case the epic gets too close.
Try to spit at it every minute or so to get it's attention, or stay close enough that it keeps it's interest.
Step 2- Once you get back to your nest with the epic, you're golden. Your family members will keep the Epic distracted (for the most part) and respawn if they die! And you as well! I would suggest taking a few steps away from the nest, but from here on just use spit. If you die, you respawn right in the nest where the epic is, so you don't have to go looking for it.
It's also handy if you're an omnivore-so you can use the "summon flock" ability. It might help distract the epic, at least.
Step 3- Just use spit, and eventually his HP will drop...and BOOM, dead epic. You get a lovely achievement and a bit lovely pile of meat. :]
Hope this helped!

I think I found a glitch where one epic was scared of me and running away, lol. It was actually one that my creature hunted to extinction before, (gasp) but apparently it came back to life in the form of an epic. So, out of chance I came across another epic and they engaged in battle! The new one ended up killing the scared one, and then after spitting at the winner for a while, he finally got the idea and spit at ME! With some sort of FIREBALL! Is that even possible in creature stage? (I'm using the regular spore game, not galactic adventures)
Ehh...so the fireball killed me instantly and I ended up back at my nest, without the epic killer achievement!

Re:"Kill an epic in creature stage" your kidding right?

If you actually watch the epics closely they don't always have 100% health. Where you get two of them with home patches close to one another they sometimes fight each other and occasionally one of them will get killed. At this point the victor will have very low health - probably a lot less than a rogue does. Then it's easy.

Other than that if you're going to use spit, trap the epic among some trees and rocks (it's not that difficult to get them stuck) and stand next to a fruit tree so you don't run the risk of starving to death.

It's not impossible. The best way is to hit it so rapidly that it roars by default (when you hit it) and never has a chance to attack. The best way to do this is to actually lure an epic into your nest (hopefully it's well populated). Your nest mates will naturally defend themselves and 4-5 adults can kill an epic if you help them.

You can also try trapping the epic in the trees and attacking it with spit.

The reward is worth it!

Quite an easy achievement, actually. Make sure you have three healthy rogues in your clan. Attack the epic by using spit and the rogues will start attacking the epic. They'll get him to around 200 hitpoints, and from there on, spit, step back, spit, take another step back etc. Sure, it might take some minutes, but it does get you an awesome achievement!

I've taken up the mantle of Epic Hunter. It is my mission to exterminate EVERY epic in creature stage, and I can pulll it off. However, one does not simply rush up and attack. One has to plan the strike, trap the epic, lure it to the ambush site, and utilize a spit attack until he is positioned just so, then rush in with a charge, then strike, then bite.

Just in case, bring rogues, because they have higher firepower. If you're just starting your Epic Hunter career, try luring it to your nest.

While the 'Call Flock' ability is a great help, it confuses the epic and it may escape your trap and destroy you if used prematurely.

Lure it to the nest? wow....and i'd usually lure it away for morality's sake.....but yea, i took down my first epic with the lure-and-snipe technique.
There is a great way to kill an Epic creature without luring them to your nest or any glitch. You lure the Epic to another Epic creature and let them fight each other. One of them will win and they would have at least half their health taken away. Then you can send your pack to kill them and whatever strategy you would want to use to kill them. Having a rogue creature in your pack definitely helps.

yes, you CAN kill epic creatures in creature stage. you could, like some examples listed, lure it to your nest and have your entire nest help kill it.you can also use rogues or another epic. but it is possible to kill it by yourself, but its not easy. i know because ive seen many videos on this and ive done it myself 3 times. i died, like, fifty times but i did manage to kill it. one i killed gave me the "deja-vu" achievement because it was my own tyrannosaurus creation O.o it was very fun fighting the epics

If you cheat you won't get certain achievements like "epic killer." now how to kill an epic, what I did is just run around spitting at it and trying to get it stuck somewhere. It took me about 15 minutes to do it but I was killed 3 times before. Its also helpful to be an herbivore or omnivore so you dont starve to death while doing it. Good luck

Ya, once I figured out how to do it I have done it several times. It's pretty much like people say... you lure it to your nest and let your nest buddies help.

However, I have done it before with just Spit 5. It does take forever though, and like erexx12 said it's good to be a herbi or omni so you don't starve (I have starved to death more than once while trying to kill an epic).
