We’ve heard your feedback on our official Space Adventures thread and you’ve got some great ideas! We have another new opportunity for some of you to share your thoughts about the upcoming expansion. Since we’d like to get a sense of how players interact with the game, we’ll be inviting between 4 and 6 San Francisco Bay Area local players to the Maxis Studio in Emeryville for some user experience testing next week, Jan 13 & 14th.


We're looking for people who meet at least one of the following criteria:

• Someone who could arrange to spend about 2 hours at Maxis' offices in Emeryville, CA on Jan 13 or 14th

• Someone who has finished at least the Spore Creature stage

• Someone who has done player-created mods for PC games--not only Spore, but for games such as Starcraft, Counterstrike, Battlefield, etc.


A small compensation will be given for your time.

I must say I have never actually completed a mod, but I've tried modding for Half-Life 2, so I got an idea of the process and the issues coming with such things. For example, when I look at the way water is handled in Spore, I see adding an underwater stage won't be possible without some serious recoding of the way planets work, perhaps even a complete overhaul of the game's engine.

A bit off topic, but I don't think the code needs to be overhauled to let it work. Sure, there must be written new code. However, From what I read prior release the spore-engine is practically built to expand upon and shouldn't be too hard actually.

My only question is, how the spore cards will hold both the terrain data AND the underwater data.
On the other hand, I'm still riddled how a spore card holds the data for parts that aren't visible on the backside and aren't symitric. (building parts).
For example, I build a wall, a solid wall. On the front a gate, on the other side one window. When I save it and view it in the sporepedia only one side is showcased but when I would import that image to spore and view it ingame the backside is there.

Well, technically, you kind of need to qualify for number 1 (be in the Cali office) to participate, so that'd be the real clincher. Pity, if there had been a bit more notice, I think I'd have considered going down there. But with less than a week to drive from northern Manitoba... yeah, that's not going to work well.

Still, I hope a fair number of people show, and that you get the feedback from them that you want (and also what we want), and that you manage to make the Space expansion totally awesome.

I was not refering to them, groups of another species not in your group not rouges and not epics wander around and can attack other species on their own without interacting with you in anyway or you interacting with them.

I'm not against them simplifying it for players unfamiliar with the genre but you have 3 units and the religious, economic, military thing plays very similarly. The only difference at all between religious and military is that religious is slower and doesn't destroy buildings. Economic is kind of different but still just boils down to build a bunch of vehicles and click on a city (with the catch you have to be friendly.


Just hear me out on this.

I don't think there should have been city types and I think there should only have been military vehicles. all cities can perform all functions possibly modified by the buildings in them. Now I thought alot more could have been done with city design and the economy is very simple (adding functionality to buildings in the editor had alot of possibilities) but since you clearly wanted to simplify things I'll let that slide.

ok on to military. I thought you should have had more units, 3 is a joke. keeping things simple lets say there are 8

Land

Tanks: heavy armor, heavy firepower.

Artillery: heavy firepower, light armor, outrange everything else.

Infantry: cheap, low armor, low firepower, equipped with guns and rockets and are the only ground unit that can fire at aircraft.

Air

fighters and bombers, this should be self explanatory

Sea

Battleships: high armor, strong guns, bombard targets at long range

Subs: stealth, extremely potent anti ship weapons, don't attack surface targets.

Destroyer: well rounded ship that can hunt subs, has a weaker deck gun and lower armor than a battleship with much less range, can fire on air targets.

possibly transport ship, these may not be needed.


ok there you go, a very small relatively simple selection of units by RTS standards, the roles of these units should be easy enough for a novice to grasp. They would be functionally editable to an extent except infantry which would just be your citizens with guns. the vehicle editors are already split into nine parts so I don't think it would have been too hard.

everyone probably needs to maintain at least a token military for defense and military means would be the quickest way to get more territory (as well as the most dangerous.

I don't like the religious path and it was probably dumb to include (spore portrays religion as entirely one note and in a fairly offensive way and this is coming from an atheist) it really should have been cultural. Anyway I think cultural and economic should have been less direct instead of just knockoffs of military. Just take some simplified mechanics from civ (you hired the a major guy that worked on that franchise, what on earth did you have him do?). Those would need their own win conditions of course. throw some diplomatic options in there and maybe a small tech tree.

I don't imagine they will ever do this now but this is how I imagined in, as a sort of civilization for kids with some RTS elements and a touch of sim city. Some of the stuff has been adressed, I'd say a 5% of it... none of which implies game-play. Honestly Maxis.. if you're looking for Industry Ready QAs go no further than recruiting on ModDB www.ModDB.com, go to the forums, post in the recruiting section.. Plenty of QA testers on there, some pros even.

Oh btw I'm a professional QA Tester, I'd offer my services to you for free if you were prepared to send me a beta and an NDA contract that didn't stop me from expressing my opinions of the game AFTER release to the public. Sadly I don't live in the USA rather Australia but if I did I'd be down their so fast to give you a 10,000 word thesis on why Spore failed miserably and why this expansion will or will not save it in gory details. All this could be yours if you just open the testing to EVERYONE not just Californians. Assuming that is, that this isn't a lame SPORE E3 style Tech Demo where they play the game for 10mins walk away and think "man that sucked" like I'm sure they did at E3 2007.

Anyway I'd suggest mailing out a closed beta to users as opposed to making them come to you. or better yet let em download the beta. I think the Face to Face element isn't needed and you're really just inconveniencing people and also over glorifying yourselves. Besides I'm thinking all you'll get is work experience kids/Interns as opposed to REAL QAs who are employed in the industry or meet the standards of the industry.

Heck if you were really serious you'd post this on Gamasutra Sounds to me you guys are just doing a meet and greet with no real purpose. Prove me wrong though.

Yes I have and they never said "This WILL be in the game" it was simply testing out ideas not anything final and the fact that they have eyes is not a big deal if you think it is then just take them off and creatures still wander around and the "sea stage" was just part of creature not a seperate stage.[/quote]

It was part of creature, he started in the water right out of cell then edited his creature to have legs and go onto land not go into a different stage, and EA is not the one that makes the game or any of the patches or expansions they only funded and produced it, Maxis is the one that makes all of it and yes they do or they wouldn't bother making them and fix problems and the game is still fun and maybe if you actually played it to have fun instead of just ranting all the time you would enjoy it.[/quote]but do you realy think that what we got was better than

The only things from it that I would really like are the graphics detail and cell and creature stage difference, Space is fine the way it is, Civilization is fine the way it is but could be longer, Tribe could be a bit better but it's ok, Cell is ok the way it is maybe just a few new cell designs though, Creature is the only one that I don't like as much being a bit long and repetitive. The video is cool yes, but the one we have is just as good for the most part.[/quote]

That's right I was attacking someones nest the first time I was in Creature and another pack came out of no where and attacked me. Also there were more than one so it was not a roque either.[/quote]
