Hey everyone,

As you know recently Maxis released a Top Creator list showing people with over 1000 subscribers (you can find that list here: [url]http://www.spore.com/comm/stats/topcreators[/url]). We're all very very thankful for the immense support of the community and needless to say want to give back. Each of us has in their own way been helping bring attention to less known creators- community sporecasts, dedications, word-of-mouth, collab projects, etc., etc. Now we have joined forces to bring you ***DRUMROOOOLLL*** the [color=red][size=22][b]TOP CREATOR PICK[/b][/size][/color], our own version of Features!

[color=blue][size=22][b]WHAT IS A TCP FEATURE?[/b][/size][/color]


Each week we will bring 1 less known creator to your attention. That will be the [b]Creator of the Week.[/b] We will feature 4 of that person's creations. We will also have 1 creation each week, named [b]Creation of the Week[/b], which is a technical award and represents what we feel to be the most original work of the week (and this can be by anyone).

[color=blue][size=22][b]HOW IT WORKS?[/b][/size][/color]


First off, the [b]Masterlist[/b]:
This is our primary tool for doing these features. The Masterlist is basically a spreadsheet that contains all people longlisted by Judges for features. It's broken down into categories, 5 themes, 4 editors, and has additional info on it like previous Maxis features, number of comments, priority, and other notes. The themes of the Masterlist are:

[i]1) Theme 1: Cute (Cute, Cartoony, Fairytale, Fantasy)
2) Theme 2: Creepy (Creepy, Sci-fi, Anime, Mythological)
3) Theme 3: Abstract (Abstract, Artistic, Alien, Bizarre)
4) Theme 4: Comic (Comic, Fun, Entertaining, Pop Culture)
5) Theme 5: Realistic (Realistic, Historical, Nature, Science)[/i]

These themes are rotated for features.

[b]The Judges:[/b]
The TCP team is comprised of Judges. Judges serve as either Voting Members, Scouts, or Nominators.

[u][i]Voting Members:[/i][/u]
Each judge can nominater as many creators as he or she wants to the Masterlist and 1 creation per week for a feature. Each week a ballot is mailed with 3 nominess for Creator of the Week and multiple nominees for Creation of the Week. The creator/creation that gets the most votes is featured.

[u][i]Scouts:[/i][/u]
We also have a special group of judges acting as [b]Scouts[/b]- using the MPN, forums, sporecasts, word-of-mouth, etc. to locate talented creators. Scouts ensure that the Masterlist is well populated with suitable creators for our features

[u][i]Nominators:[/i][/u]
These judges are responsible for entering all the data into the Masterlist, organizing it, and making nominations by sorting the Masterlist to find creators with similar profiles.

The full process takes 2 weeks for Creator of the Week, and 1 weeks for Creation of the Week (since work is stacked though, we have a feature each week).

[color=red][size=18][b]1) Forum feature[/b][/size][/color] We have a sticky in the Showcase forum (link in the header) that will hold the forum part of the feature. That includes [b]featured creations, screenshots, YouTubes, additional info, and an interview[/b].


[color=red][size=18][b]2) Trophy[/b][/size][/color] The featured creator and the maker of the Creation of the Week will get an award in the form of a [b]Trophy[/b] that he/she can upload in his/her profile.

[color=red][size=18][b]3) Forum Sig[/b][/size][/color] The featured creator will get a [b]Top Creator Pick sig[/b] that he/she can proudly display on the forums. Here is an example:

[color=red][size=18][b]4) Dedications[/b][/size][/color] Each one of us will upload a [b]Dedication[/b] creation to our profiles. This creation will link to the featured creators profile. And reach potentially over [b]30,000[/b] subcribers!!!


[color=red][size=18][b]5) Sporecast[/b][/size][/color] The featured creator's 4 creations along with the Creation of the Week will go into the

Quality, quality, quality. We will be choosing the featured creator jointly. All of these creators produce exceptional work. We expect to bring you things that match the best of our work. No unpainted, hastily put together creations. Only cream of the crop. So you get to discover the next Aaarrrggg or Genji etc.! You get to enjoy their work in your games.

You can participate by supporting the effort, subscribing to the sporecast, subscribing to the featured creators, leaving comments for them. You can also make suggestions- what we can do to further help these creators, or to improve the project, how can we make this more appealing to the community, etc! We will [b]NOT[/b] be taking nominations, the reasons being:

[b]1) this is [b]NOT[/b] a venue for self-promotion

2) we want to ensure superb quality of work

3) it's too time consuming to sort through

4) we already have a [b]HUGE[/b] list of people shortlisted for a feature and we are scouting for more [/b]

Why not base it on an equal number of subscribers/subscriptions?

I have a hard time understanding what you are accusing us of here Hydro?! I didn't even know what UBD was, or when it started, but I can promise you that this has been in the making before UBD even appeared. You can get that confirmed from both of your mates in UBD. Dirtymeat and Slarti both knew about this project. An how do you figure it's stolen from a DEL_message a couple of days ago? Do you really think that a pretty big concept like this was arranged in a few days? I can assure you it's not. And did you have the original idea about getting unknown creators spotlighted? Absolutely not. Many has wanted and tried to do that in several ways. Where did you steal the idea from? Spore TV? Your accusations are pretty harsh, so that leaves me asking what your intention was with the whole thing? TO me it seems like you are the one doing it for personal gain. I hope I'm wrong. This is about the creators that deserve more attention, not about any of us that already have reached the spotlight.

And to this weird accusation about ex-boycotters going to downrate you? Seriously? Did you even bother to figure out what the boycott was about? It was to stop things like mass uprating and mass downrating. Do you seriously believe that the ones working to get that option removed would do anything like that? Yes, I was aware of an interest by 'others' to try and form a team to select 'lesser known' creators and bring some attention to them...there are loads of people doing the same thing in one form or another all over the forums.
I also think that the breakdown of THIS idea is eerily similar to what was happening on SporeTV...which I think is a shame, because this idea certainly has the potential for stealing the thunder of 'SporeTV's Showcase' for various reasons.

The short answer is: TCP will do the features, SporeTV will do the news story. So the rules for features remain the rules laid out in the 1st post of this thread. Yes, this does mean we will still NOT be accepting nominations. Spore TV will handle news stories, Q&As, and dedications.

Every person on the team has the right to nominate creators. We also have team members who are acting as Scouts, scanning things like the forum, fansites, the MPN, Sporecasts (the Hidden Gems being a wonderful example), etc. All nominations become part of a shortlist (altho short is very very inadequate word for it) we call the Masterlist. The Masterlist is broken into broad categories to depict different "genres" of creations, each week a group of team members called Nominators pick a category and select 4 names from it. These names are mailed out to members as ballots. Whoever gets the most votes is featured. That's a very chewed down, short version of a process that takes a full 2.5-3 weeks to complete per feature. This is so not true, yes a small part of getting yourself known is indeed by participating on the forum, but not going post happy at all or spending your life trying to be "Mr. POPULAR". I know that. It´s a give and take. Normally i´m no advertiser, or someone who spends all his time in this Forum. I´m on holiday since two weeks and so I started to "interact" with Forum-Members and that brought me some minor "fame" in form of 1800% more comments per day...guess what happens when i´m ending my holidays on January 5th.

Pardon, but I think this is wrong, because it should be like that. It should be like, that if your "good" at creating you should get recognized via the Game, not the Internet. In fact, the Internet activity for thoose who want fame, must be much more then about 4 Hours a day + they have the time to continously great new stuff. So this let´s all the "normal" people completely chanceless to ever get recognized and/or get ontop of all the creators.

This, by no means, is any of yours fault who is participating in this forum, but thoose who made the game. Rate degration is just one thing, concerning the whole issue. I really worked hard the last copple of weeks to get some attetntion, finally getting 6-7 creations green. Now guess where thoose Creatures are now...they degraded into sporing Hell...

I made some cool stuff and lucked into it...and since then I've done my best to give back in any way I can.

It's wrong to assume that if we don't want to be a part of a 'selection team'...that we are doing NOTHING to give back.

A lot of people are not active on the forums, and they still have amazing creations. I think it would be unfair to deny them a feature because they don't post in here. I think a better way to view it is being active on the Sporepedia. Meaning that we can interract with them. A lot of non-American players for example don't use these forums. And have you noticed the amazing influx of talanted German creators lately? So as long as we can engage them, they can be featured. We obviously want to make sure that these creators will make use of the feature, because their participation will be necessary.

He can actually sculpt realistic anatomy, which I have not seen any other Spore artist do. Anyone can make a high detail creation with cool colors, anyone... But he's the only user with the ability to create realistic anatomy with high detail and perfect annimation. It's because he actually sculpts in real life. Should the people who are responsible for scouting decide that a person meets all the criteria laid out, I can assure you they will fww the info to be added to the Masterlist. And it's not as simple as I like this person, nominated.

Our Scouts are doing an amazing job, I personally have found many people I've recently subscribed to through their efforts, and if something is quality, they WILL know, trust me on this one.

A person who produces consistent quality work and has a low number of comments and subscribers, and has never been featured by Maxis is a high priority for a TCP feature. There are 3 tiers, we also have medium and low priority people. Over ~1000 comments, over ~250 subscribers, or a Maxis feature all put a person in low priority. Medium being somewhere inbetween. We understand that sometimes a Maxis feature means nothing (in fact, being on the MPN shortlist is arguably better than a feature, unless you get a weekend one) but we also understand that there are people who have never been featured that could benefit from this effort and they are our highest priority.

Now if you're asking if you in particular can be entered, I must yet again remind people that we are not going to be accepting nominations of any sorts. If your work matches the criteria we're looking for, our Scouts WILL know about you ALREADY. So you don't have to worry about self-nominating. It's basically taking over the task of maxis and making it in something interactive, personal, enjoyable instead of the random features or MPN list that exist.

It's really rather complex the way it works, suffice to say, it's working. Surprisingly smoothly too, I should add. I think everyone is really pumped and committed, and we're all very excited about doing this, hoping we can make a real difference for these people. We'll be monitoring closely how their subscriber count, comment count, and rating is progressing to ensure the project is helping them out.

If I was to poll it in the spore community, which hugely consists of users who are so easily impressed with colorful creations... Obviously they wouldn't choose mo. If I poll'd it on say DeviantArt for example, an extremely low percentage would go for anyone else aside mo289.

They could be put into next gen games tomorrow, something like Resident Evil or such, whereas not a single creation from anyone you guys mentioned could, for any type of next gen game, unless ofcourse the games art style was simple and unrealistic.

From what I've seen so far of the effort you are all putting into this, it leaves me very hopeful about how good a job you will do. But my concern is whether or not the creators chosen will have very well done work as far as details, shapes, sizing, and how well the colos work for what it is. I see too many people impressed by pretty and eye-catching colors which then lead them to say the creation itself is great. And the reverse is true, as I see a lot of people disliking what is actually a very well done creation simply because the colors don't pop out (despite that many creations are [i]purposefully[/i] dull colored, not everything has to be bright and shiny!). Personally I'm a harsh critic of the works of others' and an even harsher critic of my own work. It just saddens me to see so many people so easily impressed by what appears to be something anyone could do in 10 minutes while the stuff that obviously must've taken at least an hour is ignored.

So mainly my concern is that the judgement as to what is and isn't good might be no different than what the general public seems to be. But as I said, the effort put into this so far leaves me to believe that you will all indeed hold to a higher standard as to what is and isn't exceptional. But I can step back and look at a creation and be like okay this thing shows effort, it shows creativity, it shows originality, it shows someone who knows what they are doing and they are doing it well. And so what if it's a giraffe? I don't want it in my game, sure, but I can look at it and say, okay this is well-done or not. 75% of the stuff I comment/rate up I don't keep in my game, but I value the creativity that went into it.

And the judges are so diverse. We have people making cute things, creepy things, realistic things, comic things, etc. These are all people with different tastes. But I can assure you, most of them are able to judge the effort that went into a creation regardless of their favorite "genre". Looking at the results coming in for our first feature, I can tell you that people whose usual genres are very much different from the genre chosen for the first feature made very similar choices to the people who work in the same genre. So all of these 15(16) judges are pretty good about understanding that creepy isn't bigger than cute, or the other way around, or whatever other equation. first of all, i really, really support this idea, i like the fact that there could be a whole new generation of master artists waiting out there (its ok to use the term master right?) This is because, weekly i come across new and great designs made by spore artists that bearly know. Some even amaze me to some extend that i come to think, how the hell is it possible that somebody like that has never been featured before?! (then i remember, oh yeah, spore has 5 times more creations then the freaking country of holland has humans living in it!) So i really support this idea, and I really admire the love for spore and the art of creating.

for me this is another reason to create more and better creations, and i think that because of this great idea, more people will be motivated to create more and better things. I only hope you guys can take the pressure of this inmense task. (though i dont think that will be a problem to you )

I have kind of the same thing. There are some creations I'd rather not have in my game, but I still think there greatly designed. I for example don't like most puppet- or face-spaceships and buildings in my game, but am still amazed by what some people manage to create using the space- and building-creators.

The primary sources for the nominations are (in no particular order): MPN, sporecasts, forums, word-of-mouth. Good to know, but in your beginning statement doesnt it say this is a contest or challange (whatever) to feature less known artists and creatures. Checking the MPN would kind of defeat that purpose, as most of what i see there are usually a piece of work done by one of the judges (surprise surprise cause their good). The same thing with challenges, as I usually see the same 30 people enter a challenge and many other creators (myself included) never feel the need to try as I know one of you will always win. I personally believe sporecasts may be your best bet, as anyone and everyone has one and many of them have quite the varied selection of critters to choose from.

Edit: Also the MPN doesn't equal subscribers. It's the MPN shortlist that generates them, and to a much lesser extent the first page, but beyond that, it does nothing for subscribers. Once again, we realize the problems some excellent creators have with getting noticed. Rest assured, we have a system that favors these lesser known creators as well as a massive Masterlist of names that keeps on growing. One of the reasons of this project is to bypass the weirdness of the rating system to get straight to where the good creations are. Consistency in quality, overall skill, and distinctiveness within a category (having "style") are what ultimately matters. @PatTheWanderer: TCP is managed [b]COMPLETELY[/b] differently than SporeTV's features were. All 15(16) Judges get 4 very similar nominees each week. These people have similar styles, similar amounts of comments, and all have wonderful creations. To get featured you need a majority of the votes. Meaning for a sure, solid win you need 9 votes... Hardly a dictatorship. SporeTV does dedications and Q&As once a creator is chosen. And Gryph, TJ, and Terry are acting as Judges along with the other 13 of us.

EDIT: In fact, even tho 10 of the 16 votes have been cast, I still don't have a sure winner for our first feature, and I won't know until a couple of more votes either. I know that I have developed a certain style which I try to break from time to time and I actually rather see things that are far from my style cause that is where I learn from. This ensures diversity, fairness, and makes it so the 4 nominations each week have very similar profiles. The Masterlist is kept frequently updated by a Judge called the [b]Keeper[/b]. A different group of Judges called [b]Nominators[/b] pull out the data from the masterlist and randomly choose 4 creators per week and mail the nominees out to everyone on the team. Nominators also tally the results and announce the features and turn over the work to SporeTV and some judges dealing with post-production stuff.

The full process takes 3 weeks for Creator of the Week, and 2 weeks for Creation of the Week (since work is stacked though, we have a feature each week). I saw this too, but isn't that do to the fact that EA made the rating system so that if you up-rate an older already greened creation it gets downrated preventing stuff getting most popular twice?
I've had it happen a few times that I was rating stuff up (and I'm not blind, it was clearly the thumbs up ) only to see a greened creation turn bleu or a bleu creation yellow......

But there does seem to be a lot of hatred. I don't know about down-rating (although I'm sure there are some that do that), but there are certainly a lot of people that leave comments saying "R+" on stuff and then never uprate. (and I don't mean only with my stuff, sometimes I find a new creation with tons of positive comments that isn't even bleued) That's really a shame IMO. Also we may increase the number of creations being featured from a creator from 4 to 6, because lets face it, altho each of us has highlights and recurring themes, it's really hard to narrow things down to 4 creations. Not that 6 gives a hell of a lot more to work with but it's technically 50% more.

Very clever, it's like when you ask someone their preference on two movies, one being a comedy and the other being an action film, you can't really compare the two as they are so different with barely anything in common. However asking preference between two horror movies is much easier as it's the same genre of film.

Also if you want my opinion (you would be the first ) I'm predicting TCP will give alot more fame to those creators than if they were to make it on the MPN or Featured list, I mean being featured and on the MPN top 5 is great and all but it fades away within 24 hours, but with TCP your telling the other creators that the individual has been chosen by numerous high quality creators.

I would also be willing to provide links to your forum threads and YouTube channel. Of course, I would be willing to discuss other information you might want to display.

Below this would be a grid of your nominee and TCP sporecast creations. It would function much like [url=http://www.qualityspore.com/]QuailitySPORE’s home page[/url]. Each creation would link to the site’s creation and profile viewer.

The API would take me a couple of weeks to write but it wouldn’t require any work from you. Updating your sporecasts would automatically update QualitySPORE.com.
