I've yet to hear of anyone with 64-bit Vista having problems getting the game working. 32-bit is a crapshoot.
Then you don't listen enough, I had problems getting Spore to work at one point and I use 64-bit Vista. Now Spore doesn't run at all ... luckily that's through choice though

30 years old, bought the game on the day of release ... 2 weeks later the game doesn't get played.

I didn't install the first patch, mainly because it wouldn't let me and after hearing all the problems I was kind of glad it didn't install.
When the second patch came I tried to install that, but that wouldn't install either!! Took uninstalling and then reinstalling the game to get the patch to install. Not sure how good the patch is since I haven't played Spore for weeks now. I will try playing at some point and see if the patch makes the game stable enough to warrant playing again.

You know the irony of all of this is Spore will begin to wane, the expansions won't sell and all be cause EA/Maxis refuse to fix the SPORE game and instead focus on trying to milk their customers within weeks of initial release. Where's the irony? EA/Maxis will not see it as their fault for the falling sales and lack of interest in their products, nope, it's those dirty rotten pirates downloading the games that is costing them sales!
I was excited about Spore since it was announced years ago, hell I even pre-ordered (2 copies) it as soon as it was available to pre-order (some time early 2007!). The game disappointed on so many levels, bugs being a major problem, so much so that I don't play Spore any more and don't feel the urge to do so, even an expansion pack doesn't fill me with excitement and want to play. The same can be said for my wife, she has the game and hasn't played in weeks.
It's things like this which make you see the reality of why PC gaming is in such a mess ... and why people so readily turn to piracy instead of purchasing legitimately. Would you spend $50 on a game as messed up as Spore is, I did (twice LOL) and regret it ... the "dirty rotten pirates" didn't and are glad they didn't.

This analogy made my laugh. It's almost like saying you met the woman of your dreams, it put a smile on your face ... but your house burned down, which put a frown on your face ... but it was worth it so no need to complain LOL

Guess I'm not patching yet either, I have a hard enough time as it is with the game crashing.
Out of curiosity is there anyone who's installed the patch and not experienced the problems people are posting about?

I had the same problem with my game, it worked fine then all of a sudden it refused to run. After a LOT if searching for help around the forums I came across what turned out to be my solution. I am assuming you're using Windows Vista (since you don't say anything relating to which OS you're using) Browse to the following location:-
Computer -- Local Disk (C: ) -- Users -- (username) -- AppData -- Roaming -- Spore -- Games -- Game0
You will probably have to "show all files" in order to get there. In that folder is a file called Stars.db (you may not see the .db extension), delete this file but make a backup of it elsewhere first. Deleting this file will loose all your saved games, hence why you should make a backup just in case. Now run the game. For me deleting the stars.db file sorted out my problem of the game not running and given the choice of not being able to play the game or loose my saves ... well loosing saves is nothing compared to having a £40 game you can't do anything with
Ok, just in case you can't find the location of the stars.db file as listed above you can just use the built in search feature in Windows to find it. Only delete the stars.db file from the Game0 folder. Again be aware you WILL loose all saved games so you might want to make a backup of that file first
Let me know how it goes.

Glad to hear you got your game running again Detsuo04
Grimbot, yes I understand that there is a possibility that later down the line this problem could appear again resulting in the loss of everything that's been done up until that point. At the end of the day this solution allows people to play the game which, regardless of anything, is better than not playing the game. Also one would hope that EA/Maxis come out with a patch soon to address the issue ... perhaps one that fixes corrupt/damage stars.db files so that you can restore your saves (kinda why backing up the star.db file is a good idea )
I do agree that this is unacceptable and EA/Maxis need to get right on it to sort it out, until such a time we run the risk of loosing our saved games in order to continue playing. I don't like it, you don't like it and I'm sure nobody else likes it but our only other option is not to play at all until a patch comes out.

This has worked for quite a few people, myself included, but you don't need to delete the entire folder, just the file stars.db. A word of caution, you will loose all saved games, but I suppose it's better than the game not working at all

Since you provide absolutely no information other than the game now crashes it makes it VERY hard to figure out what the problem is ... and Spore has many problems
Anyway I'll take a stab in the dark since I had a problem with my game, it worked fine then all of a sudden it refused to run. After a LOT if searching for help around the forums I came across what turned out to be my solution ... one you may not wish to undertake. I'll have to go by the assumption you are using Windows Vista ... why? ... well you gave no indication of which OS you are using, and simply because I'm using Vista so only know the information pertaining to Vista Browse to the following location:-
Computer -- Local Disk (C: ) -- Users -- (username) -- AppData -- Roaming -- Spore -- Games -- Game0

I experienced the same problems as tocadae, game worked (albeit with random crashes) for days, then it stopped working in exactly the same manner. I removed the Stars.db and the game works again, obviously you loose all your saved games but at least the game works ... until the stars.db gets screwed up again and it stops LOL
Thanks for the info
