A game I've waited years and paid a fair amount of money for, which turned out to be less than half of what was promised. Surely you can't be just waving that off with, "It's a game, folks."

Its a game you brought after discussing it after the release of the creature creator and complaining on and on that it wasn't going to be what you wanted. I remember pointing it out then that this was not going to be a game you were going to be happy with. No sympathy from me.

Yes we all would love the idea of "Sim everything". Should we have expected it from the information easily accessible and provided ? 2005 maybe, 2007 unlikely, 2008 definately not.

The argument against cute doesn't really hold if you saw the trailer. That demonstrates the look and feel of the characters, even if not the lack of depth of the gameplay. The creature creator "demo" also effectively demonstrated this. Sure people could make a few "horror" creatures but the vast majority were cute and nothing could really be "horrific". Effectively people saw that the game character was cute, still brought it and then start complaining. It's far better to actually vote by not buying something than complain after you brought it. I personally like the style and cute could still have contained science. My feeling is that the two together would have been awesum to try and introduce youngsters and get them asking questions. Far better than all the blood/guts/gore/horror that most games contain.

Just to clarify my position.. I like the spore provided but fully realize it could/should have been more. Cute/Science don't really care. It's a game after all. I knew what the game would be after looking at the information provided by Maxis and EA just prior to release and as a result enjoy playing it. It's already held my attention for longer than the majority of "complex" games although I am still trying to figure out why
No problem with the link.. Was a major undertaking going on when just the creature creator was out. Some people decided to opt out as some things were frowned upon like "sluggers" and "robotic" looking creatures but overall a lot of talented creators.

You sure it's "captive" and not simply over a round on a golf course and appropriate watering hole.

What (s)he said

As an aside I find I have a lot of buddies from the "Playable Buddy List" and get an awful lot of "buddy" creations rather than Maxis content.

Boxing in EotN very easy if not a caster even if boring. If caster still possible.

Back on topic... In general still playing. Has lasted me longer than a lot of other games I could mention.
No problem, just wanted to clarify. Whilst I enjoy Spore I would have loved what everyone thinks they were promised more.
The whole point I was making Parvati is that EA/Maxis misrepresented Spore and as a result a lot of people are annoyed and frustrated. You see it on this board and elsewhere. People resent not being told the game wasn't as shown. So just to restate as you appear not to realise what I initially said...

Maxis/EA made two main mistakes with Spore...

1) DRM
2) Mismanaged people's expectations.
Couple of questions...

How many "buddies" do you have ?
Have you checked the "downloaded" area to see what has been downloaded ?

A lot really depends on what is downloaded and how "appropriate" downloaded creations are in game. Sorry I can't help more.

My 5 year old daughter enjoys watching me play and giving me "instructions". Also she enjoys creating things, not just creatures. As mentioned, more complexity would have been good but the game can still be enjoyable if you are in the right mindset.

darklord12345 wrote:I expected it to be somewhat more complex after watching a clip on youtube of Will showing his masterpiece off to NASA guys.........I would be too embarassed to walk into NASA with this SPORE in my hand.

And here you prove my point.. Mismanaged expectations.

Partly because legal issues potentially come into play... Unfortunate side effect of american culture.
I don't think the issue is that Spore is useless. I find it simple and enjoyable. It has actually taken up a lot more of my time than some other games despite it's simplicity. To me there were 2 major mistakes made with Spore..

1) DRM. Angered a lot of people and these are probably at least half of those who rate Spore down in polls making them pretty pointless as hard facts about the game itself. Half thepeople complaining probably are jumping on a bandwagon rather than knowing the true issues.

2) Mismanaged expectations prior to release. People expected hard science, complex stages etc. In truth people expected games almost as complex as normal single games for each of the stages rather than what we received even if they don't want to admit it to themselves. With the release of the creature creator it became obvious that people wanted Masters of Orion for the Space phase, Civilization for the Civ stage and lets say Settlers for the tribe game.

I don't see the "cute" being wrong argument as this was obvious with the release of the creature creator and the video trailer so people should have known what they were in for.

I would say I would have prefered more complexity not just in the gameplay but for the interaction between players in terms of buddies and sporecasts. Being able to rate/comment on crreations in game easily would have been a great help. More interaction between people occured with just the creature creator than what is happening now.

All told spore isn't bad as entertainment. It's fun and can soak up time. The main problem is that it isn't what people expected.
ashmo wrote:I actually enjoyed how Spore portrays religion as more prone to violence.

I actually find this statement quite telling into how religion is viewed and is not an actual representation of religion. Religion tends to be an excuse for violence true and has been throughout history. No religion I know actually condones violence.
I believe different legs/arms actually use up more/less complexity but can't be sure. An awful lot of it is simply to create something which looks good for you. If you just want stats it's really easy. The hard thing is getting creations looking good..
Why of why do people buy games without checking out the latest on what it actually is and then complain about it ?

Plenty of us enjoy it and we are not all 8 year old kids.
Poison and kite it (also known as running away so it doesn't hit you). Not that hard but slow. Make sure you have always aggro. If it goes back to it's starting point then it's back up to 1000 hit points in all probability. Having the ability to eat fruit also useful as is sprint, flight or sneak at high levels.

If by your own nest or can convince the epic to chase you to it.... With the "flock" ability you die, you resurrect, call flock attack and repeat. The epic will die quite quickly.
