Those are .exe files. They won't work on a Mac.
If he is like me, there's no error message. It just tells you that there is a patch available, and asks to install it. It then appears to do so, and lets you play. Repeat next time you start Spore. There is never any change in the Spore version number, nor will it ever stop asking to install the patch.
Not quite: Your diet depends on what mouths you are wearing. Your consequence ability will derive from your actions as a cell. What mouths you have access to will also derive from your actions as a cell, with the special note that you are not required to get rid of a mouth you enter the creature stage with. So if your carnivorous creature enters the creature stage with an ominivore or herbivore cell-stage mouth, they can keep it and will be able to eat plants. (As they have the right mouth.)

However, if you get rid of that mouth you will only have access to the creature-stage mouths you unlocked, which would all be carnivore.
First off: If the planet has a good spice, you want to take the slow way, and capture all of the cites. They produce at normal speed, and you'll get more spice out of that planet than any you can colonize.

If you don't care about the spice: Easiest is to reverse-terraform. Bring them down to T2 and all but two of the cities will be destroyed. T1 all but one. (You may want to drop a terraform tool and leave the system, then come back in a couple of minutes.)
A couple notes on the above guide:

Herbivores can 'fish' as well (They collect seaweed.) Again, it never runs out, which is an advantage.

But the best food source is pets: They lay eggs, which can be eaten by all. If at all possible have three allies at the end of creature: They'll come over as pets, and you can collect food from them without having to leave the village.

Otherwise I'm not sure why it won't let you place your monoliths, I've placed quite a few without any problems outside of the ones that I've already mentioned.

There is one other case I've noticed.: You can't place monolith on a planet you have a current mission with. Complete the mission, come back, and you can place it.

It's just a little bit out of my flight range from either of the nearest systems. But not out of flight range once I'm halfway between those two systems...

Nice idea. I definitely need to remember this if I run into an unreachable planet.

I should mention one thing: My race currently follows the philosophy of the Shaman. Otherwise you can get kinda stuck using this... (Yes, I've found an actual use for the Shaman's power!)
