Summary
On 03/20/2017, we’ll release updates for Spore™ and Spore™: Galactic for Windows PC and Mac.

We’re still developing the updated Origin versions of and Spore™ Creepy & Cute Parts Pack and Spore™ Creature Creator. We’ll update them soon.

Reason
Like a lot of Internet-based media, Spore uses encryption to ensure credentials sent to our servers are managed securely. The encryption certificates used by the game servers and clients that Spore has used since it launched in 2008 are being updated. Due to the way encryption certificates work the game servers and clients must be updated simultaneously.

Spore Versions
You need to download the updated Spore game client to keep playing. How you update your Spore game client depends on what method or service you used to purchase and install the client.

Origin
Uninstall the current version of Spore and its add-ons and download the new version from Origin.

Steam
Steam will have new versions of the game client files available, and the game will be updated through their usual update process.

Good Old Games
Good Old Games (GoG.com) will have new client files available, and the game will be updated through their usual update process.

CD/DVD
The CD/DVD version cannot be updated. But don’t worry—we can help.

If you run Spore from the CD/DVD you should download and log in to Origin using the same email and password you use in Spore. Spore may already be in your account ready to download.

If you don’t see Spore in your My Game Library, contact us at help.ea.com. We’ll also need your default Spore profile name to help you.

Q&A
Is the update being made available for PC and Mac?
Yes, both the PC and Mac versions of Spore will get the update.

What will happen if I don’t update Spore?
If you don’t update the Spore game client, you won’t be able log in to Spore and you’ll be limited to offline play.
How do I get the update through Origin?

If you have the current version of Spore, Spore Galactic Adventures, and Spore Creepy & Cute Parts Pack installed, you need to uninstall your versions first.

You should be given the choice of whether to keep or delete your custom creations, but we recommend backing up your created content by copying \Documents\My Spore Creations to a new location before uninstalling.

Spore also keeps files in AppData\Roaming which you can access C:\Users\{Your Windows User Name)\AppData\Roaming\Spore. If you have problems with the new installation and didn’t delete this directory, delete it manually and the game will re-create the files when you next log in.

Do I have to take the update?
While the update isn’t mandatory, if you opt not to take the update you won’t be able to log in to Spore through the game. This will prevent uploading to and downloading from Sporepedia.

Steam and Good Old Game versions of Spore will follow the existing update processes of their services.
Regardless of which digital version you have, if you uninstall Spore and download it again you’ll get the latest version with the new encryption Certificate.

I have the disc version of Spore; how do I get the update?
There will not be a stand-alone version of the newest version of Spore. If you have the disc-based installation, uninstall the disc version of Spore and download the game through Origin.

When I try to redeem my code in Origin, it says that the key has been used. What do I do?
If you have a version of Spore that isn’t from Origin and you try to activate your code in Origin, you may get the message that the key has been used.

This is due to the fact that when you log into the Spore game client with your code, the code is assigned to your EA Account.

If Spore isn’t available in your Origin client, or if you have difficulties installing via the Origin client, contact us at help.ea.com. We’ll also need your default Spore profile name to help you.

Will my Mods work with the new Spore client?
Your third-party mods may or may not be compatible with the new Spore clients and could require updates from their creators.

Before you update Spore, remove all mods to make sure you get a clean installation with no problems. Once the update is installed and working, reinstall your mods one-by-one to ensure whether they’re compatible with the new game client.

Spore Creepy & Cute Parts Pack has disappeared from My Games Library in Origin. Where is it?
Spore Creepy & Cute Parts Pack will no longer have its own tile in Origin.

Instead, to install the content, click on Spore in your My Game Library and select Extra Content. You’ll see an Add-Ons section where you can find and download the Creepy & Cute Parts Pack.

When will Spore Creature Creator be updated?
Spore Creature Creator for Windows PC is in active development and we’ll update it as soon as possible. In the meantime, you can keep using Spore Creature Creator offline. Once the update is ready, you’ll be able to upload your creations as normal.
