UPDATE 10/20/14: I TOLD YOU!
SPORE 2 OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED:

http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/10/19/maxis-announces-upcomming-spore-sequal-for-next-gen

Thanks for all your support!

A close friend of mine who works at Maxis recently leaked to me some information regarding the continuation of the Spore series. I’ve pestered him for inside information for a while now, but he wouldn’t budge until yesterday. This friend of mine wanted to remain anonymous so he doesn’t reveal his position or any revealing information. I asked him some questions, and the answers are listed.

Q: Will there be a ‘Spore 2’
A: Sort of, yes. We are working on something similar to Spore, but far more advanced and less cartoonish. No actual ‘Spore’ Titles will be released in the future though (from my understanding).

Q: Explain further about this new Spore-like game
A: Ok... Well it’s similar to Spore, but as I said not cartoonish. Also the whole ‘Evolution’ part was taken out. It’ll be called “Planet Creator” or something similar (This is still in development stage so I’m fuzzy on names, not to mention it isn’t exactly my area).

Q: What specific features will there be in this game that weren’t in Spore?
A: So much. Spore is gonna be like the awkward little brother that everyone loved until the older, more likable brother came along. The same core functions of Spore are going to be kept (creature editors, building/vehicle editors) but they are going to be improved upon greatly. It also includes a level editor similar to GA’s but with a lot more than 8 acts available (I believe the limit is around 50). Each level is downloaded upon play, and deleted upon completion (you can still re-download it) so lag is minimal, not to mention there are hardly any limits. So all in all we think this’ll be something that targets the older market that Spore drew in.

Q: So when will this Planet Creator game (or whatever it’ll be called) come out?
A: I believe sometime in 2014, probably early 2014.

I’d like to thank my friend for doing this, and anyone else who is thankful, please post a quick ‘thank you’ in the replies (I’ll make sure he reads this). Thanks for reading, guys, and show this to your friends so they know about this!

Wow, this is substantial information. It's hard to believe without a citation or a name, but I understand why you can't give those out in this instance.

If this is true, thank you for sharing this.

Seems legit.

Targeting Q1 of 2014... When it hasn't even been announced. We all know how Maxis works, this isn't even close to being believable.

Hello. I have a new sig. You like it?

I still find this difficult to believe.

How are we totally sure you have your friend's word?

And if it's coming out in 2014, why hasn't it been announced?

If it turns out to be true, then those guys at Thrive would have been for vain... Or they might try and up the ante to make it even more realistic. Of course, being me (who likes alternative positions), I think the best thing if that was true is that that they would work together, say Maxis hired the team or continued their development. Then again, it sounds like a sort of SimEarth 2 (which I have never played) instead of a Spore 2

Or this could just be another hoax... For now we'll assume that, but it could be as I said, SimEarth 2, made to sound like Spore to cause a clamor here, but not actually the same

Or maybe, it turned out to be true, but just got cancelled anyway?

Hi, I'm having a *very* hard time believing this. First of all, there's no way in hell EA will release a game that important without significant pre-release hype. Even Darkspore was announced over 7 months before it was actually released. Spore was announced over 3 years before it was released in 2008. Secondly, I really really don't believe they'll drop "Spore" and call it something else (after all, the game was a commercial hit). They didn't do it in Darkspore's case and they certainly wouldn't do it in this hypothetical game's case, unless it's a real radical change from Spore itself, in that case it's not really a sequel (Spore's gameplay is about evolution, and without that it's not really the same game).

These are my thoughts not as a moderator but as a member of the Spore community for over 5 years. I hope I'm wrong but I'm really sceptical. No doubt this will be copied to other forums/blogs, and I want to note that with EA it goes like this, unless you get the info off the horse's mouth it's not reliable.

Well, for now let's assume it's a hoax, until otherwise stated, as I've said before. Some of the more random things here sound like the "new adventure editor", even though everything else sounds like a new version of Sim Earth with Spore features.

I wonder if this is something to tell the people at revolutionary games to hurry up. Don't we all know how we got the Thrive Prodject started?

This is (by far) the most believable "leak" I've ever seen. This matches exactly with what I had expected for a "Spore 2".

It makes sense they would completely redo the game in this way, it's pretty much what they did with SimCity.

As for the idea behind it, "create your own game" was what most players wanted out of GA, and it's also a genre of games that is popular right now (with games such as Minecraft or Project Spark). It's something that anyone can play, from casual to hardcore gamers, any age, any skill with video games. The game is no "ending", it is infinite and allows for much more gameplay than the developers could have ever imagined. Therefore, it makes a lot of sense that EA would want to get out their own "create your own game" title.

However, I can already say, any future game released from Maxis will have quite a bit to complain about. EA may have lost their war on online-only, but Origin will likely still be required (that means no Steam release). There is also practically no one at Maxis who understands Spore's engine, in fact, I think the modding community understands it better than the real developers (based on SimCity and it's "impossible to fix issues" that have been fixed by modders).

Still, I am hoping this "leak" is real. I would love to see Spore being turned into a whole new platform for creating games.

If this "leak" is real, I want it to have a special thing, where you can put old spore creatures in, with the old parts, but with the new animations and the new textures, but still look relatively the same. Also, I deal breaker for me would be if there was no underwater.

Knowing EA and commercialists in general, they might make a paid DLC for that. But that sounds like something that would work as a function of the game itself.

I find this extremely hard to believe. Despite Spore's support quickly dropping, it remains a commercial success. As Slime said, EA/Maxis would have hyped this up the butt and back again, not keep this all secret and under lock and key. Granted, I don't remember hearing about the newest SimCity until it was shown at the last E3 press, but I'm pretty positive that Maxis would've blasted the Sporum or something about this "leaked" game by now. ESPECIALLY if it's geared to release next year.

Also,
This friend of mine wanted to remain anonymous so he doesn’t reveal his position or any revealing information

Why? Especially the latter when he, essentially, gave you "information" about this theoretical game.

You have to remember that most of the users here already know that Maxis technically abandoned Spore. That is to say, look at the featured creations and such. Of course, I'm not talking about the Sporum or the servers. Slime, Blackbird, the rest of the sporemasters are an example. I guess.

Also, I shouldn't say this but I have trouble believing a person with 5 posts, lol.

I also had a friend who works at Maxis who told me they were going to release Bacon-Themed furniture in The Sims 4

But y'know, he also said he wishes to remain anonymous. Huh, small world, maybe he knows your buddy.
