Space colonization is a popular topic in both science fiction and talk of space exploration. Most of the time, the nearby rocky planets are discussed, or the moons of Saturn and Jupiter. As you go further out, however, discussion starts to slow down. Uranus, the first of these ignored out of bodies, is arguably the most peculiar.

As a gas giant, it obviously couldn't be colonized conventionally. Adding this to the lack of sun, the distance from earth, the extreme tilt, and the aforementioned lack of actual land, Uranus might be the most challenging place in the solar system to colonize.

So the questions for this thread are; What equipment would be needed to colonized Uranus? What would the structure of this colony be like? Who do we send to Uranus? What would be the purpose of such a colony?

Vilageidiotx is a they!

I think it would be very difficult to colonize Uranus, Vilage.

All I can say is that we need to know much more about it to do such thing.

Depending on atmospheric turbulance, density etc it could be possible to "float" colonies in it's atmosphere (think giant airships); if the level coincides with useful gases and predictable winds it could be used as an airborn fuel manufacturing platform using wind power and thelocal gases.

It doesn't seem very practical though, there's much better candidates in the solar system with lower gravity, more abundant supplies of hydrogen, deuterium, methane etc that also possess solid ground and a smaller gravity well: Europa, Titan... Earth

There's no shortage of fuel materials on Earth, we just lac the imagination to utilise them right now since we're hooked on fossil fuels. But there's no fossil fuels outside of earth anyway so there's no point exploring new worlds for oil because there won't be any so it'll be hydrogen, methane, nitrogen etc that are of intrest and Earth has no shortage of those. The reason we'd want to manufacture them off-world is that we have to burn a LOT of fuel to escape Earth's gravity well, moons like titan have much weaker gravity.

Uranus by contrast has higher gravity than Earth

On a sidenote, if you ever find uranus has been colonised, you could probably see a doctor. /ba dum tsh

This will be my colony:

It'll be the vacation spot of a life-time, floating above Uranus's atmosphere.

Uranus' strong seasonality and frigid temperatures will be significant barriers to colonization. It's actually colder than Neptune, despite being closer to the sun.

I personally don't see Uranus as a very wide avenue for exploration, but I think with sufficient knowledge and equipment mankind could certainly make great thrusts in that direction. Of course, that would be in a long time; we'd have to get to know our solar system very, very well before we even suggested trying Uranus.

I would love to explore Uranus and see what's under all the gas.

The planets density is very low for it's size; we can be pretty sure it's mostly made up of ice and gas. I'm not sure it even has a "surface" in the sense you're thinking of it. Gas giants tends to have such high pressure and density in their deepest interior that the gases themselves would be denser than anything you drop down there; ie. "you'd float"

By "surface" I meant more like "Outer layer of Gas"

If you guys do make it to Uranus, you'll have to install a sewer system.

That way, they'll be another gutter for you to keep your minds in.

After all this time, nothing's changed. Everyone in this "community" is in it for themselves. Maybe there's some exceptions to that rule. Maybe you're the exception to the rule. But if you're honest with yourself, you'll probably realize that you're not. Those who give comments only give them in hopes of getting those comments returned and becoming famous someday. The haters stay because they aren't willing to let that one time go. Maxis isn't around because they're doing something else, trying to get money on some spore spin-off. There's nothing but filth and despair as far as the eye can see. You call this vortex of greed and anger a community? Ha. That would be funny, if it weren't so sad. So I don't want to be here. There's a saying I'm well aware of around here... "ragequit, return as alt". Honestly, I don't see myself doing that anytime soon either. But if it makes you happy, you can believe that I'm still here. But I won't be. Because I know for a fact that there are better places to be. So toodles. Enjoy your wasteland. I don't like it, it smells too bad for my sensitive nose.

TL; DR: Lol Ragequit.

This ragequit note needs to be longer and contain more caps lock.
