'Course no one has any idea how to build one. That part gets left out a lot.

I think it's because no one wants to be proved wrong.

Bands of positive energy at the ends of the warp bubble, with negative energy around the side. All of this will total the mass of Jupiter. The energy created would be enough to warp spacetime. Of course, you could always use the same positive and negative mass again and again and again, so the issue of exhausting your positive and negative mass will be minimal.

Now go to Babylon in 3400 B.C., hand them a mathematical proof detailing sustained fission, and have them build you an atomic bomb. Oh wait! They don't have the background knowledge to even know where to begin! It's so far beyond their comprehension of the universe that they cant even build the instruments required to calibrate the instruments they'd need to build the instruments that will build the manufacturing hardware.

That's where we're at with the Alcubierre drive. We don't even know where to begin. We're not even close to knowing if it's even plausible or possible. It exists outside of our current mathematical models of how mass and energy interplay.

But the atomic bomb eventually happened, right?

It turned out to be possible. Nobody knows if that's the case for the alcubierre drive. The proof conveniently ignores the inertial effects of actually moving the mass required to create your warp effect and assumes that negative mass is a thing.

Ancient people also thought it would one day be possible to transmute lead into gold. 1000 years of science confirmed that it's impossible through chemical means.

I'm not the most educated on the subject, but it would be EXTREMELY hard to colonize Mars. Even if we had proper resources. We would have to ship food there, and we have to aim a ship right so it actually hits Mars. The solar radiation would also be fatal, meaning we would have to work quickly to develop underground homes just to be remotely safe.

(If a thread is necroed and stickied, does it matter?)

Colonization of Mars would be very difficult unless we invented faster spaceships. Flights to Mars are somewhere between 60 to 80 years in length with our current technology. There's a large chance that the first colonists to arrive would die of old age before the trip was over. Then there's the issue of equipment and food. Unless Mars was inhabitable as a planet in more ways than just size and elements, there's a very slim chance of us colonizing it. Plus, people would probably fight over who it belongs to.

it's more like 500-600 days to Mars. As far as space things go Mars is pretty close. If you catch it on a close approach (every year or so) the trip isn't terribly long.

Mars, I think it is the goal of this century. Exploring, and, maybe permanent habitation, it just seems we should take care of earth.
