Can I save a game on my laptop and then continue the same game on my desktop?

When I log on on my desktop I can see my creation, but I can't continue the game where I left off on my laptop. When I hover over every planet all I see is "New Game" instead of my existing game (and planet name) from my laptop.

Anyway to do this? (even if I have to manually copy some files from one machine to the other).

You probably have to transfer the saved game files, which I haven't done and can't tell you how to do it. I think I saw it somewhere so if this doesn't get answered by someone else, I'll try to find it for you.

I THINK that trying to do something like this will make the DRM overlords very upset unless it is two seperate licenced copies of SPORE.

However I may be completly wrong so please correct me if I am.

Thanks sporemasterladym, you put me on the right track. I searched for "transfer saved game" and found this thread:

http://forum.spore.com/jforum/posts/list/1737.page#13378

I'll give it a try and see if it works.

I copied the files manually and it worked like a charm!

I then had an idea and added both of the folders above to my "Live Mesh" (www.mesh.com).

I now can run Spore on any of my Live Mesh devices (laptop, desktop, etc...) and I can pick up where I left off from any of my computers - at home or at work (without having to copy anything manually)! I also have an automatic back-up of my Spore games and creatures on my "Live Desktop" (up to 5 GB).

For more information, check out my post on the "Live Mesh" at http://screencasts.ehuna.org/2008/09/cloud_computing_today_not_tomo.html (I have links there as well).

If you try this out:

1) Make a backup of the two folders above before you start. It's easy at the beginning to override the wrong files on conflict and loose all of your games.

2) Only run Spore on one computer at a time - otherwise you'll have conflicts where you'll have two versions of the same file on your mesh folder - and you'll need to make a decision on which one you'll keep.

Copy "\My Documents\My Spore Creations" from old computer to new computer

Copy "Spore" directory from old computer to new computer

In Windows XP
\Documents and Settings\(Username)\Application Data\SPORE

In Vista
\Users\(Username)\AppData\Roaming\SPORE

The Application Data directory may be hidden. To display hidden files:

In the menu Tools->Folder Options->View
check "Show Hidden Files and Folders"

sporemasternumerator: thanks - that's exactly right and it worked great.

It also works when I add these two folders to Live Mesh and let them synch up across multiple computers. I can then play my game and pick off where I left off on any other computer - automatically. without copying any files! (of course Live Mesh is copying the files for me).

See my post above for more details.

I decided to write up instructions on my blog for anyone interested in playing their saved Spore games on any of their computers -

http://blog.ehuna.org/2008/09/continue_playing_saved_spore_g.html

Update: I got a couple of emails with comments from folks who tried this out, so I updated my blog entry with more detailed instructions. Basically, I now avoid Live Mesh conflicts on first setup by making sure saved Spore games are copied (and not merged) the first time you add a device to the Mesh.

Good times!

Disclaimer: you do this at your own risk. It's working for me, but if you do the wrong thing and overwrite the wrong files you may delete saved games, crash Spore or create a black-hole that will destroy the Universe.
