So: After making sure I had hefty funding available (63 million) and having plenty of every necessary contraption, I decided to move inwards and make war with the Grox. Definitely a long term endeavour, but I've run into what seems to be an insurmountable snag:

They own worlds that are impossible to get to!
After cutting a huge swath out of their territory, I was irked to discover a scattering of planets which are out of the range of my level 5 interstellar drive, and are nowhere near wormholes. Thus, it seems like at best I can beat the Grox back to these worlds, but they can hang out there indefinitely, and launch attacks.

At this point the issue is somewhat academic, as I have a long way to go before I defeat them, but I'd like to think that it's at least possible.

Am I missing something? Has anyone else enountered this problem?

Someone once suggested planting a monolith nearby, and then paying the newly-minted empire to attack the Grox. Not sure if that works though.

I found that problem too. Getting to the Grox is like being in a maze - if you enter their empire from the wrong place, you will hit a dead end. I had to go back to my saved game and start again at another entry point to get to the centre of the universe.

Yeah, I hear you, it took me a while to find a good route to the center. I've been there and back, my current issue is with wiping the Grox out. I can wipe 'em off any given system fairly quickly, but it's frustrating to have systems I can't reach that they're on.

I'll try out PariahDog's suggestion, and post whether or not it works.

Yes please let us know what happens.

I too am in the middle of my preparations for war with the Grox, in the middle of the gather money and tons of tools stage, then I'm off to hunt them down. Err...I should say hunt down where to start...no missing them, they are huge!

I heard there was some planets unreachable and so far I'm assuming someone will find a way to get to them, or a patch from Maxis might fix it if its some kind of game error.
(I personally can't believe they would make planets that way on purpose, in the universe I'm supposed to have a chance at running)

I've noticed that some stars are actually moving and this is one of the ways I lept into what I though was an unreachable grox cluster. Of course I was just at the right place at the right time, but at least there is hope.

This is, oddly enough, true. I believe I actually have a video of this occurring and I've only seen it happen with Grox systems.

That happened to me, only I ended up stuck in a barren system with one star, and one gas giant, so not even a way to kill myself to respawn t my nearest colony.

made me mad.

And here we are, a moving Grox system:

Yeah, I've come across the moving star systems, came in very handy. Also there do appear to be stars owned by the Grox that are too far away from any other stars to reach. After reaching the center, I started clearing a path back out so my other races would have an unmolested throughway to the center and noticed there were outlying stars that were just out of reach of the interstellar drive and there didn't appear to be any moving stars in the vicinity either.

i heard somewhere that you CANNOT ask another empire to attack the grox

have you guys tried using the fact that vertical distance is not calculated? only horizontal. maybe there is a way to get to them OVER or UNDER them

You can ask other empires to attack the Grox, that's how I've been taking out my second side/arm area in one of my games.

Try slingshotting, click a planet and before you arrive, click another, and another, etc.

to gain extra range it is very difficult to do, you gotta change direction at the last second so that you overshoot the planet which will give you tiny bit of extra range.

Still, it might be worth a try.. It'd be cool to have a fire-and-forget planet buster. 20 parsec range.
