JoeyBagOfDonuts didn't post a screenshot of his awesome work in progress.
So I will take the liberty of doing that.

This is a totally awesome app:

Sporenament is already addictive, thanks JoeyBagOfDonuts for putting it together!

Some feedback:
Sometimes I'm indecisive and wish I could change a decision after making it.
I love spoints and the fact that they're both awarded to the judge and creator
Can't wait to play with level 2 and 3 when they're up and stable
Can't wait to be able to interact with the creations by navigating from the app to the SPD page to comment on a creation!

This is a promising looking app.

JoeyBagOfDonuts wrote:Sporenament:

A way for you to "find" new content by pitting one person's creation against another in a tournament. There are 3 Spornaments (Level 1, 2 and 3).

At level 1 you compare 16 random creations (although you have the ability to filter by Buildings, Creatures, UFOs or Vehicles [or any combination]) until you reach one ultimate winner at the end. The winner will be saved so that it can compete in a Level 2 competition. [That part has not been started yet].

At Level 2, you compare 8 Level 1 winners until you reach one winner at the end. That will be saved for a Level 3 Sporenament.

At Level 3, you compare 4 Level 2 winners.

At each level, both the Author of the creation and the person who judged the Spornament will be awarded "Spoints" which will be used to determine what you are allowed to do. I plan on putting some sort of leaderboard by Spoints.

Any of the assets can be right clicked and you will have the option to visit several of the Maxis webpages related to that asset. If you are logged in, you could do anything you would normally be able to do, such as add asset to a Sporecast or make comments on the creation.

For now, the only part that is 90% complete is the Level 1 Sporenament. Once you start the app, click the blue level 1 button at the bottom. From there, filter your assets, then just click on which asset you like best in each of the groupings. If something isn't implemented, a messagebox will explain what the plan is for the thing you clicked on.

The app requires the .Net 2.0 runtime. It will prompt you to install it if you don't have it but for some reason the link takes you to the 3.5 runtime (you have to choose 2.0 runtime from the right-hand menu).

Feel free to provide any constructive feedback!

Just downloaded and played this! Very cool. So is the idea that every "win" from a level 1 tournament will be tracked by your server somehow? And only those are allowed into level 2 tournaments, and so on? I think it's a great concept and it's very fun to make the choice between two assets

Great work, keep it coming!

I've been tinkering around with auto-generating a signature based on achievements. This is what I've got so far...

Spore Signature Generator
http://files.pc-3d.com/Spore/spore_sig.zip

Takes a player name and makes an image like this one out of resources supplied by the Spore API

I took the guid map from here: http://www.spore.com/data/achievements.xml
and the achivement list from here: http://www.spore.com/rest/achievements/Awesim/0/200 (replace Awesim with any player name). Then I download each achievement picture by guid name from here: http://www.spore.com/static/war/images/achievements/0x0cc8b2c9!0xbae19486.png (replacing the guid as needed). Then I composite the entire thing together - all with a simple python script (source_code.py provided).

I was hoping for something that could update itself somehow - but I'm not much of a programmer.

Great work Awesim!
I really like how you show the full range of achievements and then gray out the ones that haven't been unlocked.

One way I can think of to make it dynamic is to make it in Flash and have it query the user's achievements each time it runs. There is an achievement sample in Flash here: http://www.spore.com/comm/samples which is perfect for extending into a Flash version of your "Spore-Sig" app.

Actually.. I just took some time and did that!
Here is the sample modified to load achievements dynamically... (source code is below)

Lone helper... The example above is only a simple demonstration of dynamically loading achievements.

It serves as a starting point for making something more sophisticated that would take care of formatting if someone had too many achievements.

Here's a link to some Flash tutorials to get started.

I've been working on something sort of similar to that over the last few days. Mine is a PHP script that displays the latest few achievements in a row, rather than a grid of all of them. It's intended mainly for signatures.

It's online at http://www.sporebadges.com, so anyone can use it in their signatures and get an auto-updating image. You can see it in action in my signature right now. I also plan on adding another script to generate an image of your latest creations.

You can still look at the actionscript source, which could give you some idea of what to do in another language like Python.
