What is rate decay ectually? There are many "theories" like this one: If you rate a creation up when it has rate decay you will actually rate down. I really don't know what to believe. I think that the rating decreases every day by a small amount. This sounds REALLY stupid! It seems that the old creations that were made before the rate decay aren't losing ratings, like Charles Darwin. It's really impossible that that's still on number one! I can think about a positive thing of rate decay, but still.. I don't like it. The things I think about it:

Positive thing(s):
1. The Most popular page is full of creations every time.

Negative thing(s)
1. It's not fair that your creations are rated down because of rate decay.
2. It's really not fair that older creations made before rate decay won't lose ratings because of it (if this is true!).
3. You can't be really proud of all your ratings for a long time because they will vanish slowly.
4. It's not really as hard to get in the Most popular list like it was before, because all creations will be downrated.
5. When your creation gets on page one of the most popular list you maybe are like WOW! I DID IT! But you don't see your creation there anymore after a few days.

I can think of much more but I don't really know how to tell it (i'm dutch ). Anyway. Rate decay really stinks if you ask me. So my question is:

I want to know the truth about rate decay. I want to start a petition if many people don't like it. So please reply on this forum and let's see if we can do something about it if people want to!

There are alternative ways of handling rating decay.

Most users would be satisfied if it happened, but didn't affect the highest watermark smily the creation achieved. In other words the internal rating could decay, and allow for the rise of new creations, but the "green face" on the creation would remain green.

The only problem with rating decay, really, is that it is unfavorably exposed to the owner of the creation, who looks that the color of the creation's face as an achievement.

The proof in this is that most creators rant at people who inadvertently expose the decay by rating old creations and "changing my green face back to yellow!".

That said, this probably belongs in feedback, where there are some other threads, as well as other, more elaborate "fixes".

Oh, I've talked my fingers off about this, and posted in feedback.

Sometimes people don't believe in simple solutions. But when I was programming, I've often found then work pretty well.

The reason rating decay confuses so many people is because there's no real-time updating of a creation's current rating. It only applies accumulated rating decay whenever the creature is rated by another user. This can cause a creatures rating to drop even with an up-rate because the unapplied decay is greater than the new user's up-rate.

But to have the Sporedia update the ratings for decay on millions of creations every day would require way too many resources. So we're stuck with the system as-is.

A general rule-of-thumb that I've seen before is to never rate anyone's creation that's over 2 weeks old. That way it retains the old rating and never gets hit with rating decay.

But the main thing wrong is not the mechanics of it -- it's the tying them to an exposed visual that most creators see (right or wrong) as an award.

The disruption of the "award" is the problem.

Not the internal revision of "place among all creations" that allows new creations to accrue value and be visible in the welter of older ones.
