Spore Hero

Q: Is the game a sandbox like the PC game or does it have a definite ending and goal? – LadyM (Gaming Steve)

A: Spore Hero is a story-driven action adventure game with a very strong narrative element to it so we do have a very definite ending. Since this is Spore we made sure there are many roads you can chose to get to that ending and different ways for you to overcome the challenges along the way. Also, in this story, you decide what your hero will be, with total customization in the Creature Creator, made just for the Wii.

Q: Are you limited to one creature per game or can you change out to a different one during the game? – LadyM (Gaming Steve)

A: At any time during the game you can go to a nest and access the Creature Creator to change your hero into something different. You will have access to all the parts you unlocked so far, but you might not be able to equip them all right away. You will have to collect shards of the blue meteor scattered throughout the world as they are your currency in the Creature Creator. How many you have will dictate which combination of parts you can have on your hero and therefore which abilities are available to your character.

Q: Will you be able to use the online capability of the Wii to visit other galaxies from other players? – LadyM (Gaming Steve)

A: This is one of the elements where we are different from the PC game. Since Spore Hero is storyline-driven, we quickly realized that sharing wouldn’t make much sense. Whenever you make a game you have to make choices and one of those choices was to put our energies on making sure that the story was compelling and the game was fun.

Q: Is the Creature Editor with Spore Hero Wii the only customization we will have, or did you happen to include say, a plant editor or any other editors? – Judhudson (SporePrograms.com)

A: I have to be careful not to spoil anything from the story here, but I can tell you that you will be editing more than just your hero in Spore Hero. We already showed in some interviews that you would be able to edit some of the NPC’s in the world to help them with their problems, but that is not all. I really shouldn’t say anymore about this here.

Q: Any plans to have either a Wii specific Sporepedia to where we can download other people’s (or our friends’) creations to use them in our game or even share screens or videos? - Ballightning (Sporedum.net)

A: We do have a Sporepedia in the game where you will be able to collect your creations, but we had to restrict this to your very own console for many reasons. This Sporepedia is also where you keep all the characters you want to use in our VS mode where you can battle your friends.

Q: The Paint mode in Spore Hero Wii - can we now paint our creatures bodies in specific areas using the Wii’s motion controls or is it similar to Spore PC’s version where we just pick default skins and adjust the color? - Ballightning (Sporedum.net)

A: It is a lot closer to the PC game where you pick from some skin paint schemes. The fact that you can create any sort of crazy creature made this the solution that was best received by people who tried the game. It’s a simple and efficient way to get your hero to look just the way you want it.

Q: What type of customization is in Spore Hero? – Connor (SporeOperations)

A: We worked really hard to be able to bring the full editor from the PC game to the Wii. We have all the functionality and all the parts from the PC game as well as all the parts from the “Cute and Creepy” expansion pack. That leaves you with over 280 parts to play with. We made some changes to the interface and the controls to make sure that it would be easy and fun to use with the Wii remote and Nunchuk too.

Q: Does Spore Hero require any other Wii stuff? or will we just need the controller? – Connor (SporeOperations)

A: Spore Hero uses the Wii remote and the Nunchuk. For even more fun I suggest you get a second set of controllers and a friend for some frenzied “VS-mode-combat-action”!

Q: Is Spore Hero multiplayer? – Connor (SporeOperations)

A: We had so much fun with our combat system that we decided to add a VS mode that you can access from the main menu. You and a friend can each grab a Wii remote and Nunchuk, create your very own creatures (or use one of the pre-made ones) and battle it out! There are not many things as satisfying as creating a small pink ball with just a little leg and a beak and winning against your friend’s demon-looking predatory beast full of teeth and claws.

Q: Spore Hero for the Wii and Spore Hero Arena for the DS - any plans to link the two together to swap/view content between them? – Judhudson (SporePrograms.com)

A: This was another one of those tough decisions where we had to decide what we wanted to concentrate on. On this subject we decided it was a better investment of our time and energy to go for a deeper, funnier story and well-balanced and exciting gameplay. We did make sure that the story we were creating in the Spore universe would work in both games so that we would both benefit from a rich and interesting storyline.

Q: Please elaborate with the differences between Spore Hero for the Wii and the creature stage of Spore from the PC. How many more creature customizations are there between the two and are we limited to staying on one planet or can we visit others? – Judhudson (SporePrograms.com)

A: Spore Hero is a big departure from the PC game. On the PC you are slightly detached as you oversee the long evolution process of a species. In Spore Hero you are inhabiting a creature, you are living the life of this one hero out to save the world and you have an amazing ability to evolve and change at any moment. There are no limits to how often you can go back to the Creature Creator and what you can change when you do.

There’s also a fun storyline, which is all about how and why you crashed onto this planet and most importantly about how you go about saving it. I could tell you what happens when you’re done saving it but then it would spoil the fun, wouldn’t it?

Spore Hero Arena

Q: Is the game a sandbox like the PC game or does it have a definite ending and goal? – LadyM (Gaming Steve)

A: The game is an entirely new adventure, set in the Spore universe. All the galactic arena champions have fallen under the powers of dangerous red meteors. After your ship is peppered by blue meteors, you find that you are immune to the corrupting power of the red meteors. Now, only you can save the galaxy! You will be able to create your creature heroes with the Spore Creature Creator, and it’s in 3D (a first for Spore on the Nintendo DS)! There are over 150 parts and new Bio-Powers for you to collect and use to evolve your creature. You will get to jet around the galaxy, exploring new worlds and fighting enemies in your quest to find out who is spreading the red meteors and how to stop them.

There is a great story to experience as you find out more about where the red meteors came from, and how you can stop them from corrupting the whole galaxy!

Q: What type of customization is in Spore Hero Arena? – Connor (SporeOperations)

A: Spore Hero Arena will allow you to create your own creature using the new Nintendo DS 3D Creature Creator! The parts you select for your creature will determine its strengths and abilities, so every creature will fight in its own way. In addition, you can attach over 15 bio-powers to your creature to give it special moves to use during arena battles. These bio-powers are not connected to specific creature parts, so you can look good AND be powerful.

Q: Is Spore Hero Arena multiplayer? – Connor (SporeOperations)

A: Spore Hero Arena was build from the start to include multiplayer arena battles. Players can select from a number of different arena battle types, select their favorite creatures and then compete with up to 4 players over local wireless. You can also connect using the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection to play against friends or strangers from just about anywhere!

Q: Are you limited to one creature per game or can you change out to a different one during the game? – LadyM (Gaming Steve)

A: You will be able to collect over 150 unique parts and power bio-powers during the game. You can evolve your creature to overcome new challenges and face off against bigger and fiercer enemies as you jet from planet to planet and explore new worlds. You can save up to 50 creatures in the Sporepedia for use in quick battles or multiplayer matches.

Q: Any plans to have either a DS specific Sporepedia to where we can download other people’s (or our friend’s) creations to use them in our game or even share screens or videos? - Ballightning (Sporedum.net)

A: We do have a new Sporepedia where not only can you see creatures you meet (and beat!) in the game, but you can also download your friends creatures. All creatures that you download will be available to use in quick battles or multiplayer matches too!

Gamespot, on Spore Hero wrote:During the past few months, we've had plenty of opportunities to check out Spore Hero, including at a recent Electronic Arts press event in San Diego. The game has come a long way since we first checked it out in May, and now that we have our own preview build, we've had a chance to spend some quality time with it. For those who haven't been following our coverage, Spore Hero is an action role-playing game built from the ground up for the Wii. It doesn't play like the PC game Spore, but they do share some similarities. They both have a robust creature creator and excellent animation, which gives the game a ton of personality. But Spore Hero is primarily targeted at an audience that is looking for a lighthearted adventure in which they can ultimately save the day.

epresentatives from EA stopped by to walk us through some of the changes that they've made to the game. The opening cutscene was tweaked a bit to help tell the story better. Two meteors, a blue one and a red one, are streaking across the sky, heading straight for a lush and beautiful planet. Each meteor carries an egg, but when they crash into the planet, blue and red meteor shards are scattered across the planet. We learn from the start that the red meteor bits have some kind of evil hypnotic effect on the locals, but the blue ones don't. You play as the little Sporeling that hatches from the egg of the blue meteor and quickly befriend a local creature named Meejee. The creatures around you realize that for some reason you are immune to the red meteor's strange effects, so you're now in charge of helping them with all of their problems.

It's a simple story, told through written dialogue and a garbled alien language. The voices are cute, and the animations add a lot of personality to each of the tribe members that you'll wind up meeting. We were able to create and customize our own adorable little Sporeling, and new parts were constantly being added to the inventory. Fossils are located throughout the world, and by shaking your Wii Remote at them, you can excavate more parts for some cool new upgrades. Each of the six areas that you explore will have a variety of quests for you to undertake. There are quests in which you will need to fight, but not everyone on this planet is violent. There are singing and dancing challenges, as well as evolution quests, in which you help a particular creature evolve a certain way. For example, we came across a creature with no ears or wings who was trying to obtain a delectable moonfruit from the top of a tree. The quest will direct you to the creature creator, where you can provide the helpless critter with the appropriate parts so that it can fly and find its meal. The dancing quest is like a rhythm minigame, in which icons will appear onscreen to tell you what to do with your controller. Singing is similar, but it involves tilting your remote and holding the A button at the right time.

Fighting is not a huge part of the game--unless you want it to be--but you will have to evolve and build up your hero to fight the evil Zarkhator (the guy from the red meteor) who is also evolving. The battle mechanics involve shaking the nunchuk and remote for certain maneuvers, which is fine initially, but you'll have to change up your tactics if you don't want to end up waggling your way to victory. Battle mode was added so that you can create your own creatures and fight against a friend whenever you like. Even though you're limited to a small ring in each of the fighting arenas, there are some beautiful views to check out in several of the stages. As you get new parts, you'll gain new abilities, like gliding and swimming, which will allow you to go back to previous locations and explore further. The level designs are nice too because it feels like you're in a large valley or huge cavern, but in reality, it doesn't take that much time to run from one end to the next. The areas aren't linear, so you'll find a lot of winding paths and higher platforms, which can make it easy to get lost, but a map is available for your reference. All the quest checkpoints are highlighted to help you keep track.

From our play time with Spore Hero, we were quite happy with the pacing and were impressed with how it all came together. The music and sounds that the creatures make really add to the overall experience. The game is obviously targeted at a younger audience, but it has a lot of charm, and you're constantly being rewarded, which motivates you to keep going. As soon as you get a new part, you'll want to run back to your nest to access the creature creator to see what you got. With more than 250 parts to find, it'll keep you busy for a while if you're looking to collect everything.

It looks like Spore Hero has taken the quirky and lovable creatures from the original PC game and created a lighthearted RPG on the Wii for those who are looking for more exploration and interaction in the Spore universe. Be sure to check back for our full review when Spore Hero is released on October 6.

IGN on Spore Hero Arena wrote:
August 18, 2009 - For those that thought you could only experience the creative concepts behind EA's Spore on PC you're a bit behind the times. We love you, but as a friend we figured we'd hit you with the truth, and it's true. EA is morphing the Spore franchise into a full-on platform-defined property this year by not only continuing to give players entertaining world population gaming with the original on PC, but also by expanding that world through the Spore Hero and Spore Hero Arena titles on Wii and DS specifically. With new footage and info hitting out of the German games conference EA snuck over to our office last week and gave us a bigger look into what both of these games are about.

Both Spore Hero and Spore Hero: Arena have the same overarching concept, though their execution and finer story points are all their own. Both games focus on the concept of red crystals that have fallen from the sky, and you – the hero – evolving as you explore the world and collect them all. With Spore Hero: Arena, however, the gameplay is far more… well… arena-based. After you're forced to crash on an alien world you discover that the solar system has been shrouded in evil, with the power of myseterious red crystals being harnessed by the galaxy's strongest fighters. After a little prep and training the game kicks you into a quest to track down the greatest fighters in the world, defeat them, and harness the power of the red crystals. This, of course, is done through the game's self-titled arena combat.

For those that played Spore Creatures already on DS you'll be pleased to know that the experience is entirely 3D this time around, and it certainly makes for a better pocket Spore offering. Creating creatures is extremely easy, using the touch screen for camera manipulation, part movement, and also movement when in the actual game. The game's story progression also lends itself well to unlockable content – namely new parts for your creature – so as you explore you find new pieces, can then go back to the creature creator and evolve, and then use your new powers against bigger and tougher foes. Each time you find a piece or complete a challenge – be it in the game's stage-like adventure portions or in the arena battles themselves – you'll not only have a chance to acquire new pieces but also more DNA points. If we learned anything from Jurassic Park, it's that Mr. DNA is an important person, and that rings true here as well. You won't be borrowing code from frogs – at least I haven't personally come to that part yet – but each collection of more DNA means you can equip those larger pieces you find.

There's also a nice bit of depth and strategy to the whole "unlock and customize" aspect of the game. True, you'll gobble up new parts all over the world, but once you get into the creation tool you can't just shove the best stuff in there right away. Since you've got that DNA count to watch out for you need to balance what pieces you want not just from a visual standpoint, but also how they affect your stats. Each piece does different things for your creature, so while you may dig a certain body, arm, mouth, or horn you may change your strategy after a few battles if it isn't doing you good when it comes to arena play. As for my lovely abomination – a scorpion/t-rex abomination called "Skorprex" – strength is sacrificed for more speed, but I use the game's special abilities to even that all out.

And speaking of the special abilities, a new three-power system is worked out specifically for the game's arena battle emphasis. As you progress through the game new powers become available and don't take up the space of parts or added body modifications. Instead, your creature inherits three types of attacks and can freely assign one specific power to each of the three types. You've got a single enemy attack – which can be a projectile, dash move, or stat buffer – a multi-enemy attack – similar, but auto-seeking and more of a buffer in most cases – and then a persistent or area attack. For the third one players will initiate it and then reap the benefits for a short amount of time. At the beginning you've got two main options – either to equip a strange wind-based cyclone attack or have a berserker buff to all stats – and they of course increase in options from there. When I was finished tweaking my character I had fire breath, a shock ability which would stun all enemies on screen, and the berserker power-up that effectively doubled all of my stats. Skorprex is a beast to be sure.

I'm still extremely early on with the game, but already I've had a chance to try my hand at the actual arena combat as well as the adventure mode, and both are pretty entertaining. With the general adventure itself you move around the world like Phantom Hourglass, using the stylus to move your character. All actions – slash, bite, projectile, and then block – are pulled off with the d-pad in different directions. Each attack an also be charged for a more devastating version. When in actual arena battles the game puts a larger emphasis on creature-vs-creature, with up to four people in the action at once. Various modes are also included based on the type of battle, so you've got a free-for-all Battle Royal, team games, "Capture the Egg" which is like a two-on-two version of capture the flag, a mode called King of the Planet where everyone battles for a single crown, a survival variation, and a unique mode called Hoard and Hatch, where each creature tries to crab and protect an egg for the round.

I haven't had a chance to jump into the multiplayer aspect of the game yet, but Spore Hero Arena supports not only four player local battles, but also Wi-Fi enabled fights, so those that pick up the game this fall will have some good competition to look forward to when they step into the area.

Spore Hero looks like a quick cash-in for those who don't have a PC... witch, in todays world, is rare. Why would I buy this when I have the full Spore on my computer? Still, this looks intresting enough to buy, no, rent.
