I've dated a lot of English majors, linguists, and even one high school English teacher. They know all the "rules" in English far better than I, but they were also quick to point out that English is a living language, and "accepted practice" can change these rules.

Like, remember when you shouldn't end a sentence with a preposition? It doesn't seem to matter now.
