If you go to a planet and place a colony, then select the "Colony incredi-pack", leave the planet (but not the solar system), and return to the planet immediately. You will still have the 'incredi-pack' out and will be able to place it extremely close to other planets.

I have found this to be very useful in defending my planets against attacks (only when I am physically there of course)

I started putting my colonies in a three-point configuration with the Uber Turret and such right in the middle. But putting them closer together is a useful trick!

having colonies really close to each other helps a lot when fighting enemy invaders, as it lowers the distance the uber turret needs to travel to meet them head-on... im SO gonna be using this now

I have found it only helps when you are actually ON the planet, if you are not on the planet the game's logic doesn't factor "colony proximity" into it's defensive equation.

But it sure as hell helps during those annoying Grox attacks! The Uberturret has less ground to cover and the turrets will shoot close by Grox too!
