A big part of getting on the MPN is getting seen and rated, of course.

So the single biggest factors are building fan bases who will rate for you, and getting rates from people who are not part of your fanbase (and reminding your fan base to vote).

That boils down to comments. I'm talking LOTS of comments. Many days of commenting rather than creating, or commenting more than creating. Almost everyone I've talked to says that's how they got started. Getting out there and making or returning 2 or more hours of comments a day.

You have to do less of that if you have a fan base who vote for you whether you comment or not.

It takes surprisingly few votes to make MPN. I mean not many at all. 25, 30.

That's why purple blobs make MPN fairly often. If you get all your buddies from school to download the trial, or the ones who have Spore to get their alters to vote, you can get to the front page in a heart beat.

Lest anyone think my comments were merely to get "votes", I am not so cynical and "cheap" as that. I only comment when I think the creation deserves it, and I enjoy what the creator has made.

My observations are the result of commenting and rating, without regard for my creations -- it was a surprising side benefit that I saw my creations then shoot up to MPN several times.

I stand corrected about clubs mass up and down rating people.

Oh, I know clubs rate for each other, and this is fine, but the idea that it's acceptable to throw all of my available alters at rating is one that is foreign to me. I just did not believe that it was accepted practice and I apologize to all of you who argued with me and told me that it happens.

This is not condemnation of anyone, per se. I'm just reposting this as affirmation to anyone naive as I was to think that the norm was different.

Neither of these are "bad" people. But I do think it's a bad practice.

People are constantly crying that "everybody" does it, but I've never yet had to employ such means

I accept now that an ethical stand of the implied one user/one vote is not correct and that by saying something in a "protected area" I'm likely to have every creation I ever made downrated to the nether regions.

I really don't care, since I play for the game, and with myself in mind, but I"m a little ashamed by association. And have lost quite a bit of respect and regard as well.

@ashkelon: I am not aware that Becks uses her alts (when spore.com allows) to mass uprate creations. I took it to mean that she thought my creation deserved more than one vote per person (i.e. it is awesomeness) I would not dream of asking people to mass uprate using alts, and I have only used my alts once to mass uprate (it is a time consuming business, logging in and out) and as you say, ethically wrong.

Making the MPN can be arduous, as it seems only a handful of people will consistently comment and/or rate stuff anyway. I was shocked at how many rates some of my creations get, whether they deserve them or not.

Is it not implied by the fact that one can make five alts, that one is entitled to five votes per person? In fact, one might view multiple uprates as a means of more accurately expressing favor - like rating a youtube video. With one account, you have merely a "yes," "no," or "abstain" vote. With multiple accounts, you have the option of 1+, 2+, 3+, etc. I personally don't see a problem if you're consistent how you do it.

Personally, if I said I would "mass uprate" someone, I would mean exactly that.

I have occasionally told people that their creation "deserved better than a green face", which I think is expressive of thinking it superlative.

I clearly stated that I am not saying you, or anyone else, is a "BAD PERSON". I'm saying MASS UPRATING by ONE PERSON is a BAD PRACTICE.
At least one other person in your club recently posted that they had to create many alters to mass uprate a creation of his that get downrated.

THey were very clear about it.

I figured that point would be lost in howling about me bashing PEOPLE. I am not.

I have 5 licenses that are in use. I can afford at least 4 more on a whim.

I have 9 PCs where I sit.

So what you are saying is it would be ethical for me to bust out 45 votes on one machine, + 5 each for alters on the 8 other machines on every creation I think should be up or down rated?

I guess everyone is either lucky I'm too ethical or too lazy to throw a hundred or so votes wherever I want.

I don't even ask my KIDS to vote for my stuff.

And I've only downrated once.

But since it's easily POSSIBLE for me to put 100 votes out there every day, for every creation, is it RIGHT to do it?

I know you are not bashing people, ashkelon, you are not that sort of person. Some people use alts consistently for this, others don't.

I cannot speak for any of the Euroclub members, or anyone else, but downrating is also a problem (which is confiused for ratings decay sometimes). I think the whole practice started because of downrating, and has expanded since then.

The problem is that not everyone thinks you do ashkelon - there is no consistency, mores the pity.

All I can say is I meant maybe 2 or so rates for one single creation, just to help out a good friend. And that's when spore.com allows me to even use the website, which glitches very often for me.

Only once? I thought it was a couple times. Maybe you ended up back in third or fourth before you had a chance to notice. I swore I've seen you at #1 at least one other time.

I've been #1 a couple times (UBD Decayote, Angelus Cryr, Endless Spiderman, Zorlok Gathering, etc even MrFisto got a #1 using my Hollow template with his HollowKnight), but I am happy just getting onto the first page of MPN. I am getting used to a new 6 am job... so its been rough trying to find time and comment people and work on adventures... commenting people is definitely the best way to get high on MPN unless your brand new creation gets featured (it does sometime happen)
