So I had my creatures decide to move on without me (as usual), and decided just to ignore them for a while and go exploring as I didn't want to evolve right away anyways.

Running around checking everybody out, I come across a rather oddly familiar species .... MY OWN!

It's got a green '?' like it's a new colony I haven't explored yet. A couple of regular "Ytsejam," a baby and an alpha. As soon as I get close enough to it where the '?' would go away, it turned into my nest icon!!

Is this supposed to happen?

I'm not sure if you found a duplicate of your species or your actual nest, but yes your nest moves. Typically you can check your lower map and it will have a "house" icon for where your nest is. It moves two or three times in the span of my average creature stage play-throughs.

Spore Wiki for your ease of reference. And here's the GameFAQ references.

Yes, it is suppose to happen. There are other nests of your species beyond your own. You can change to a nest you've found without needing the migrate mission if you feel a given nest is better.

You should do this before you start tribal stage. If you start near the ocean you can build ship from the beginning on.

Well, There isn't only one bird nest on earth is there? Your species normaly has somwhere from 2 - 4 nests. And once you "Find" one. It counts are your new one. Where you spawn, mate etc.

I have noticed that the arrow pointing to my new Nest will change as I get close to an alternate Nest, so if I don't want to go really far to the south, for instance, I strike out in another direction until the pointer on the minimap changes.

Hehe yeah, I had sort of assumed that since I just evolved legs and all my critters wouldn't have crawled too far from shore without me.

Anyways, thanks for the replies! It's good to know that I've got at least a little bit of "sandbox" mobility in this stage ;p

I think this happened to me once, I didn't want to evolve right way so I went out for a look. I was looking at my map every so often, and knew that I wasn't exploring in the direction of my new nest. Eventually I came across some of my own species. I am pretty sure that they're put there so getting lost won't be too bad.

It was kind of weird though, because of course there's always the one who wants to mate right away - Hearts a flutter and whatnot. I said to myself.."listen, I don't know who you are - I just came over to see who you were, I'm not sure I wanna know you like that right off the bat". "You're not even my peeps, you just look like them..". All was well in the end.

You don't have to enter the Tribal Stage if you don't want to. You can continue to explore and socialize (or predate) the World you can reach. And mate. And evolute. You just don't push the lower-right button

Indeed; what's nice is that time still marches - the billion/million year counter still goes. So if you wanted, you could say your creature really did take 32 billion years to evolve to sentience and be some of the oldest creatures in the book.

You only change nests in two instances:
1) Your flock moves on. It will only do this twice. Now you need to go to a new nest--it doesn't matter which one, just one your flock hasn't been at. You can go where your actual flock went, or you can go to one of the auxillery ones. Both methods will induce the cutscene and automatically set this to your new home.
2) If you find an auxillery nest, or other nest that isn't abandoned, you can make this your home. It does NOT do this automatically. You have to:
2a)Mate at this nest.
2b)Click the nest. It will ask "Do you wish to make this your new home?" You may select yes.

When you enter the tribal stage, your tribe will be at your home nest. If your flock has migrated and you haven't reached it yet, the primary nest that your flock ran off to will be where your tribe will be located.

Yes, I've experimented a lot with this, how can you tell?

Among other things. The only drawback is that you can't no longer check if your current path leads to Predator, Social or Adaptable. You must guess based on your gameplay only. That's one annoyance

Just save your game, click the button to go to next stage. If it's predator and you want adaptable (neutral), just quit to main menu (without saving), and reload, you will be right back in the creature stage, and do some more socializing.

Hit T. Brings up the Timeline and you can close it out, both without triggering the next stage.

That works too. I like T better.
