Well they tried to get his soul, but he already sold it to make the SIMS successful.

There's a little press release going out today as we speak (well actually I'm not speaking, I'm typing... (and I guess you're not even listening, you're reading (unless you're having your new Kindle read this to you in which case you are listening) but you're definitely not reading this "as" the press release is going out, and I'm certainly typing this hours before the fact....) anyway. (I suck at writing)

The gist of the story is that I'm leaving EA (well, not really, I'll explain) to start (well, not quite start, it's actually been around for quite a while in a rather different form) ... let's say dive into a new venture, The Stupid Fun Club. The Stupid Fun was actually started many years ago by myself and my friend Mike Winter, we met while competing in Robot Wars and Battlebots. It was apparent to us that one day the robots would take over the world and we decided we wanted to be on the winning side, so our initial charter was to do whatever we could to usher in our new mechanical overlords.

Along the way we ending up building and prototyping a lot of... odd stuff. People would come by our shop and get interested in this stuff for various reasons. Some of this stuff sparked new creative ideas, even (*gasp*) ideas that may have "commercial, entertainment value" (this is how you talk when you've been around lawyers and MBA's too long).

At some point we started showing some of this stuff to the people at EA. They got excited by the prospect of us pursuing these projects commercially (or that's what they said anyway, I think they just want to be on the winning side of the coming robotic revolution as well). So we started talking to them (EA, not the robots, though we do talk to them as well, but the robot responses are cryptic at best) about getting involved and investing in The Stupid Fun Club (we asked the robots first but they're all broke).

So as things worked out I decided to jump into my work at the club more or less full time. But at The Stupid Club we'll be working on new games (along with EA) as well as other kinds of projects with different partners.

I can't talk about specific projects coming out of SFC just yet (alas, the robots won't let me), but as things develop I'll find a way to keep those of you who are interested informed about what we're doing (but not with a blog...I'll never have a blog). A major aspect of the projects I've worked on has always been the player community, that won't change.

Well I doubt you will hear this (rather read this), but let's have a go anyways for the sake of futile customer hope.

To start I have been with you since simcity 2000. I have the sims and their expansions, the simcities (even societies), simearth, simant (one of your best), and naturally, I have Spore (otherwise how I am here would be quite odd wouldn't it?)

Now, Spore. Yes, if I recall correctly back a few years I remember hearing about a great project called Spore. Heck I even remember seeing one of my favorite game developers testing the game out on youtube. I watched the video in awe and wonder, even showed some of my pals who ended up buying your game (approximately a meager 8 extra sales for you.) I do admit, geeky as it is, I watched the 35 min. demo video at least 20 times. Got Spore Creature Creator immediately and heck that was a game in itself, it still carries much of the game.

Then Spore released. For a solid two or three months I was very much content. Then naturally, things got monotonous, but this is to be expected. CC came out but, personally I wasn't really inclined to pay 60 dollars for a few extra parts when the Creators in the game now are all ready innumerable in potential.

Then GA was announced, and this immediately captured my interest again. For Spore the game has all ready laid down a breath-taking groundwork. I know that if GA is done properly it will be a breath of revival into Spore. Possibly setting the game to unprecedented popularity. For it could mix elements of multiplayer (in terms of many people working to make a game/mission.) As well as the amazing wealth of potential such as whole games, stories, etc. able to be made and played by people worldwide. If done right the player will be able to make the content of the game and so several possibilities and flavors will be available. Much like with StarCraft or WarCraft III online, GA coupled with the fact that YOU can make the characters, the triggers, the maps, etc. means that Spore could potentially be a game of limitless possibility.

So now I am very much confused. Why does one of my favorite game creators suddenly abandon his greatest project on the cusp of the expansion to revive it? Is EA pressuring you? Is the GA project not going well? Am I perhaps just confused, and though you are leaving EA, you will still be able to help build Spore? What am I to expect from Spore if you are not still on board?

Even if you choose not to respond to this, but just read this. Please, as a loyal customer, and a believer that Spore, the project you set out to make the greatest will be the greatest, do not abandon ship. You are our captain after all, even if none of us have ever spoken to you or will ever speak to you. Your very presence keeps us here in hope that this game is not a waste of time and money.

I don't really know you very well, and being relativately new and on the outside didn't know you existed, I still would like to say for all of us that you will be sorely missed.

I hope you find success in the Stupid Fun Club!

Dude, check out my sig images, and then more importantly, go to your Achievements page and download all the various images from the different stages of Spore. There are approximately 6 different types of "icons", which all have different color palettes. Just browse through your achievements and download all six varieties. Load them into PS or GIMP or whatever you use, and then BAM! Get to work making your own icons... to reverse an old cliche, it's way easier done than said.

I know that Will sits a few rungs above God on the ladder of importance, and I know that he is (was?) a super big honcho at Maxis and EA, but does this thread really rate a valuable and scarce sticky spot?

Not only is this old news already, but being stickied into the number one slot makes it difficult to tell if anything has been added to make it new news again.

I only come to this site now and then in hopes of finding a "fooled you! here's an expansion to play Real Spore" announcement. And, I'd gladly shell out another fifty bucks for the "Science Spore," as some have called it.

Reading earlier in this thread, I see that's just never going to happen. In the list of upcoming projects from the Maxis person, there is "Spore Creature Keeper." I googled that and guess what..

"Spore Creature Keeper has players nurturing, training and playing with their own personally-created creature. With lots of toys, clothes and gizmos to play with, players can pamper their pets to perfection! Fans can play with their creation alone or have a play-date online for endless creature fun."

Clothes. Toys. Online play-dates. You have got to be kidding me.

The other upcoming titles weren't even worth bothering to recall correctly.. one was "Arena." Whoopee-dee-do, take the creature you made and play some Warcraft with it. Swell.

The saddest thing here is that it actually IS possible to make a game that can appeal to kids and hard-core science nerds. I'm reminded of the old game "Creatures." From the looks of it, you'd guess it were intended for maybe four year olds. But the deeper elements were there, for those who chose to explore them. Virtual DNA you could tinker with, evolution (of sorts), and learned behaviors.

So, Maxis could have done it. They had the money, they had the talent, they had the time.

Anyway.. I'm hoping Sims 3 won't be a repeat of the Spore debacle. One thing is for sure -- I will not be buying on day one. I'll be reading the reviews first.

At least they started the spore series with Spore (which is a large step for video games) and GA (which is also a huge step for video games) but still. If that is the true future i don't believe EAxis will have as much business because they think most of their audiences are little kids, when it's really about fifty fifty between young and old (I imagine). That's just such a stupid route to go both fianacially and aesthetically...
