At the time of this writing, the Spore Universe has over 60 million creations and almost 2.5 million creators.
The Spore API is a means of accessing this tremendous database through simple web services.

Our web services are cross-platform.
You could develop applications in any language and for any platform, be it something that runs in a web browser, a standalone app for a desktop or even something for a web-enabled phone!
All of those can access the data on Spore.com using the same API.

There's three main types of data to access:
1) Creation Data:
PNG thumbnails
XML file that contains all the information about the creation
The Spore game uses this XML file to reconstruct the creation
2) Creator Data:
creations, buddies, achievements etc. for any user
3) Common Game Data:
- achievement icons, pictures of various rigblocks etc

At Maxis, we develop and use this API internally to make applications for our website and beyond.

We are constantly improving and extending the Spore API.
