Just in time for the holidays, Valve announced that Spore™ and Spore Creepy & Cute Parts Pack are available now via Steam, a leading platform for PC games and digital content with over 15 million accounts around the world.

For more info or to get Spore from Steam, visit www.steamgames.com.

This will make quite a few people happy, I think.

I love good news!

In response to a few questions I've been getting, Spore from Steam does not have SecuROM. It uses the Steam DRM.

I don't suppose there is a way to convert our Securom purchases over to Steam?

Seconded. Get this EA Download Manager out of my face and let me use a DRM scheme that actually adds more functionality than it takes away!

At this time it doesn't look like a Spore registration key can be imported to Steam:

I was all ready to purchase this again on Steam (especially as it appears the SecuROM DRM may not be used), but what a surprise. It's North America only. Again. Why is it so difficult to simply sell games worldwide on the Internet these days? =(

If EA will allow owners of Spore and other DRM'ed games to freely register for Steam's DRM-free versions, I will forgive all of EA's DRM sins, and I'm sure a lot of other people would too.

i dont think it will be too hard for steam to setup to allow it but i dont know exactly how they work im gona be hopeful though would make me play spore more knowing that if my computer crashes or dies that its on my steam account or if i lose my disc i never have to worry i would purchase more from ea if it would allow me to do it.

Bah! it's just a rant and not important...

One question about steam though... do I HAVE to be online all the time in order to play the game? I have periods of up to a month on the road where I don't always have an internet connection. It seems with steam I'd only be able to play spore at home when I have an internet connection.

How steam works all the games product keys are tied to the steam account i believe as long as you have a computer that has an internet connection you can play the steam games on any computer. There is a offline mode to play the games via steam with out an internet connection and they have instructions on doing so via steam's website.

I got that part... but like with Stardock's games. I just have to have an internet connection to install (and it activates at that time) after that if the game is or has single player I can disconnect from the internet and go on my merry way able to start up my computer and play weather I have an internet connection or not. From what I gather about steam you have to login just to start the game every single time. That will kill Spore for me as my next trex is going to be about 20 days without internet (SecurRom requires re-activate every 10 or it disables the game yes?)
