In recognition of player feedback regarding DRM and SecuROM on Spore, Maxis is offering a standalone download so that users can now "de-authorize" a computer if they would like to make that authorize available for another machine.

Machines can be de-authorized or re-authorized at any time. The total number of machines on which Spore can be authorized concurrently will continue to be five. To de-authorize a PC download and launch Spore_deauth.zip and run the Spore De-Authorization Tool.exe file.

You can de-authorize at any time, even without uninstalling Spore, and free up that machine authorization. If you re-launch Spore on the same machine, the game will attempt to re-authorize. If you have not reached the machine limitation, the game will authorize and the machine will be re-authorized using up one of the five available machines.

Thanks everyone for your feedback, we hope you find this tool useful.

I am glad they finally did this but I still think securom is really dumb in light of the fact that it failed as epicly as any anti piracy measure could ever fail.

Thank you maxis for giving us a means of keeping our games from turning into coasters, I realize the whole securom thing isn't really your decision. As for EA can we please stop pretending this prevents piracy? you'd have to be deluded to believe that. And with deauthorization Securom isn't even a good way to reduce resale unless you count people not wanting to put it on their computers as a good way to prevent resale.

Now if only spore were something I'd want to install more than 3 times

the only question I have is.

I am upgrading my system in the new year, New motherboard and Quadcore . I am keeping the same Harddrive and video card. WIll I have to de authorize even though the hard drive is the same or is this not required?

It seems from what I have read points out that a MB upgrade would use a authorization so I would be better of to use this tool then restart the game when the new MB was in.

You should run the de-authorizer when you are ready to tear down your pc to do the rebuild. A new motherboard will definitely be recognized as a "Different" computer since changing the mobo will be seen as a major hardware change. EA looks at your basic components when it registers your game; mobo, cpu, graphics card, sound card, hard drive, DVD / CD drives, etc. I believe that I remember an upgrade to something link adding additional memory or changing monitors wouldn't trigger a new registration but changing out a major component would.

Remember, no matter where you go, there you are.

My computer died at the end of October and I had to buy a new one, well is there a way to deauthorize that old PC with this tool?

Or does it only work for the current installation? If so does that mean you STILL lose an authorization.
It would be nice if you can choose what to deauthorize...

i have to agree to that, a list of activated computers and a checkbox in order to de-authorize 1 or more would be nice

but then you should be able to name the computer authorizations in order to identify them..
