Good luck. At least the grammar and spelling are simple. It's memorizing the vocab that's tricky.

The hard part of irish is that the language was pretty much "feral", as you know. So the surviving vocabularies and pronuciations are all pretty much discrete. And then in some other languages, you can pretty much learn "words" to say what you mean.

Like in spanish or german, if you literally repeat the words in english (like babelfish) it's still intelligible.

Celtic languages -- no such luck. THey are full of allegorical sayings and ways of saying things.

For instance Tá an oíche ann == There is the night == It is night time

But I love it very much and can blunder through the news passably.

I think the variety of languages here is one of the most wonderful things about the sporum!

On technical boards, I talk to people mostly from the USA, Ireland, India, Brunei, China and Japan.

Here people are from EVERYWHERE! I especially like being able to meet and talk with all the Germans and Dutch here, as well as the other countries like the Slav, Croats, Israelis, Greeks and so many others.

The mutli national nature of this board is a JOY! and that's why I get so BENT when someone natters about "proper english".

Breathe out, so I can breathe you in, hold you in. MinionJoe, grá mo chroí.

What has aluminium got to do with British humour? If I think of British humour, I think of John Cleese doing his Silly Walk...

Strictly speaking... I have a terrible time because my little welsh mother taught me to spell... colour, behaviour, zeroes...

I prefer an extra U in words like that, words seems less "colourful" without it.

I don't care either way if its spelt with a 'U' or not. The American ways is the American way. The Euorpean way is the European way.

Don't worry, it's just a running joke this side of the pond because everything in Windows comes defaulted to the American dictionary, needless to say it's a point of irritation when Windows tries correcting an English person on how to speak English (They did afterall invent the language, so surely their version should be "default")

*In so far as languages can be invented, but it does at least predate the formation of American by many centuries

Ash: Don't forget Wales (Bwnci) and Spain.
Brit humour is the best; I do spend a lot of time with the best Brit TV shows, when they're on. ("Waters of Mars" airs in the US on the 19th! Don't miss it!)

Well, since the UK is a few rankings below Microsoft as a world power ...

German grammar is tough at first. For past tense, you always have to put the verb at the end. For example, "I went to the train station".

It is said like this:

"Ich habe zum bahnhof gegangen," or "I have to the train station gone."

But it's pretty fun learning German.

الجنون؟ هذا... هو... سبارتا!
