It makes more sense, if you are all still trying to get a manned mission to mars.
Then again, a manned mission would make the man or woman stuck on mars for months because of the orbits from what I have read.

But they would have everything we think they would need to survive on Mars for the three to six months they would be required to.

Would it be plausible, though? Wouldn't the degree of radiation they are exposed to in that period of time give them a (roughly) 20% chance of developing cancer directly related to the trip?

Go sunbathing for a couple of hours and you run a much higher risk of developing a fatal cancer. 20% risk is, by comparison, tame.

the numbers may be off, but I think the chance is ridiculously inflated from that.

We already have an idea for the spacesuit they will wear when outdoors and not in the habitats. They protect from radiation with no problem.

Also, its probably best to remember that if the radiation could come into contact with them enough to cause an elevated risk of cancer, then the radiation would kill them before they even got back to Earth.
