34 and Spored out after about three weeks. Although, I must admit, I haven't had a game keep me enthralled for 14 straight hours since highschool, and Spore did just that on the first day I bought it.

But then I got three archetypes into space stage and interest dwindled. It plays like an MMO (like a very very dumbed down version of Eve Online, specifically), except that I have no online community to play with. It's all the boring repetition without the social life to distract me from how boring it is.

That said, it's still more interesting than what's on TV right now.

I am now where man will be, approximately one million years from today.

I too am a 51 year old dad with a grown son. We both like playing video games together, he is 30, but he has no interest in playing Spore and I have no interest in playing Soul Caliber. But we both love the Lego games, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and now Batman.

I haven't even had a chance to get through Civ stage yet because I only have a few hours a week to play. But I have been taking my time and so far I have enjoyed the game. I am trying to build strong effective cities and figure out how to make better / more effective vehicles to fend off my attackers or convert them to my side. I am looking forward to getting to space stage because it sounds like it will be a lot of fun.

I don't know if the success rate is aligned with age or just that people of all ages have different ideas about what is entertaining to them. Some people need the excitement of running and gunning to be entertained, whild others are just as happy spending time building great buildings that not only look good in their cities but are effective in motivating their sims. I think it is just a matter of personal perspective on what you think is fun.

Remember, no matter where you go, there you are.

This was discussed before a little bit, but Spore is weird in that it strikes a chord with only certain individuals. I don't even think it's a group. It doesn't really seem to have anything to do with age. Like one poster said, her child loves it, another said their child was board in a week. I'm 35 and look forward to playing it every day. The true followers though are somewhat rare. Many fans couldn't get over the fact that it wasn't what they expected, or they can't get past it's current shortcomings. Those that like it seem to like it for very different reasons. Some like the editor aspect, some like certain stages but not others, some do nothing but play with other people's creations, while some do nothing but create. I myself am fascinated at the scope of the game. Not so much how long it takes from beginning to end, but how long it could take from beginning to end. I still haven't even to begun to scratch the surface of space. I have empires of medium size, but still within my control. I sometimes go back to creature stage and work my way up, sometimes I start at Civ. It's not that there is really anything different to do each time, but I find it interesting being able to make different decisions that will affect the game down the road. Knowing that my Creature will have a future, and not knowing exactly what the future will bring intrigues me. And then there is the fact that the game is well, rather easy to play, and I understand what is going on. It really doesn't depend on razor sharp reflexes, knowing all the secrets, having the right combination of stats and so on. That and the endless variety of in game content is staggering. If you just open up the doors and let it roll in, you never know what you might stumble across, good, bad, or indifferent. As stupid as I think flying toilets are, when I'm in a dogfight with 10 ships whipping every which way, lasers pulsing, turrets blasting, parts flying, alarms blaring... the struggle to take down the flying toilet empire just plain makes me laugh, even days later when I think back. I guess the game just suits certain personalities. Anyway, I thoroughly enjoy the game as is, and I see too the awesome potential, just as long as the post release dev team gets their act together.

They way got the target age wrong on this. Complexity is that for a 6 year old or less.

Reply to StevenMC, I agree, that is what I like about it, but in the overall run, decisions do not affect much past what bonus you will get in the next stage, it was promoted as a long history run. As for nothing blasting you, wait till space stage when every 5 seconds something attacks

Oh I've been to Space several times, and every time I have a very different experience. From a plundering war monger, to an incredibly rich economic mastermind. The game responds to your play style, so attack and you get attacked. Focus on something else, and rarely will you be forced to fight. And I suppose the history is solely for my entertainment as I'm the only one that knows the creatures life story, but decisions in one stage affect more than most people bother to realize, at least, that's what I'm starting to discover, which is why it has such an extended replay value for me... I keep finding new things that I haven't explored, and directions I haven't taken, so it hasn't gotten old .....yet.

EDIT:

I used to climb cell towers for a living and once in the dead of winter I caught my boot on a piece of steel and ripped the toe of my boot wide open. When I got back to the truck, I found a caulk gun in the back seat and decided to give it a try, not sure what kind it was, but it's still holding today, about 4 years later.

I have two younger sisters and both have lost interest in playing Spore and hav gone back to the Sims (and I don't really blame them).

As a lot of you have already noticed, the editors in Spore are astounding and fun, and I still sometimes have the urge to go on and build some new vehicles or buildoings that I just thought up.

Sad thing is, the editors were not supposed to be the spotlight of Spore. The gameplay concepts seen in earlier Spore demos are what hooked me so early on, and I continue to hope that Spore will go in that direction where gameplay is as complex and creatice as the editors.

Hellgaze wrote:Nope your just a believer....like me I believe that somehow all these complaints about spore will go away and be replaced by praise because EA/Maxis did something awesome.

Yes, Spore is good now, and Maxis most certainly had the right idea. It's just that Spore is only a fraction of what it should have been, and I feel that people should continue to voice their opinions so game companies will finally realize that dumbed down gameplay does not equal casual gameplay (see SimCity4 and SimCity Societies).

But this still has yet to be fixed (also make spore like it was supposed to be!)

27 and fed up of the direction the gaming industry is headed. Parallels Hollywood...

I like Spore. Have had lots of time invested in just creating creatures with no regrets. I'm no Maya man so this is the closest I can get to creating something using my hands. Too many FPS' and MMOs clouding the market anyway. Even though Spore kinda trickles into the latter, it's still a very detailed creative experience.

No, EA did not pay me to say that

An intresting point the OP raised...

They dumbed down the science aspects of the gameplay and gave it cutsier graphics and cut out the blood in order to make it marketable to pre-teens, which increased their target audience about about 18% giving them an 18% (roughly) bigger initial sale

However, the expansions are (or should) be where the real money lies, essentially selling a second or even third copy-worth to the players who buy the expansions. However, because they dumbed down the original game, there are now less people likely to buy the expansions.

It makes me wonder, have EA screwed up their own marketting model, trading off long-term profit for a slightly larger initial profit? - If they have lost more than 18% of their customers over the cutsification (Naturally some players will leave anyway), but if their design decisions lost them more than that, then the cutsification actually backfired
