I do both. It depends on the kind of creature I'm hoping for. Sometimes I plan each stage and each part I need before I advance, and other times I just see where I end up, sometimes with one of the three common archetypes in mind.

Sometimes, I'll have a certain archetype in mind, and I'll plan out the evolution for the best stats. Most of the time, however, I'll just fool around and see where it takes me - that's how my creatures started stealing eggs.

I stole them because while they feed carnivores, they don't count on the killing scale.

Which brings up a whole philosophical avenue best abandoned before it starts
