I'm wondering about this myself. My guess would be no, no, and a double extra helping of no.

It, like an invasive weed, merely reinstalls itself if the game is still installed and in-use.

SecuROM cannot be completely removed from your system without a total reformat. All other manual means of removal leave traces behind.

It is rather like a worm.

a clean install of the OS gets rid of securom since that also clears out the registry

If you remove Securom, and there are several third party websites that state they are able to do so completely however I can not vouch for the safety or success of the processes they recommend, you will not be able to play Spore or any other Securom game. There are at least 3 dozen titles that use Securom, some of them very popular games.

Not true, Kaliena....You can get rid of SecuROM using these instructions:

http://reclaimyourgame.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=68&Itemid=40

Problem is, because of the games connection to the servers (i'm assuming) SecuROM reinstalls itself upon game startup.

I KNOW it's the servers because I installed a no-cd crack so I could shelf my disc (I don't like swapping discs, so sue me :p) and it STILL reinstalls itself.

Its either that, or the game's programming itself has some sort of self-install when the game starts up that's part of the files installed on the computer by the Spore setup process.

Then again, it could be the EADM that reinstalls it. I dunno.....matter of fact, i just uninstalled EADM....I'm gonna give the removal a try again. I'll report back in a bit.

You do not need a crack to shelf the disc, spore does not require you to have the disc in.

Well don't i just feel like a fricken dork...

Either way, I just removed SecuROM again, and reapplied the "crack" that was released with the pirated version.....now, either that is incompatible with the retail version of the game, or it's just that it doesn't work with the patched version of the game.

Either way, removal of SecuROM and use of that crack caused the game to crash before the splash screen could load.

I'll update again if I can find a way to remove SecuROM and play at the same time.

What a joke. So once again the legitimate buying customer gets royaly screwed over and the people that torrented it are able to play.

Well one more person is going to be torrenting that tonight I can tell you.

The crack provided with the base torrent only works with 1.0 Spore, I think there was a 1.01 crack released but at least some of the torrents contained trojans or other malware so... be careful with that route.

I'm not yet that desperate to download a pirated copy and run it instead of the original I bought. Still waiting for a patch.

TRIUMPH! AT LAST!

the 1.01 crack works!

just follow those instructions I linked, find a non-virus copy of the 1.01 crack (i don't want to get banned or anything, so i won't link to the crack), and then start up the game.

Viola! No re-installed SecuROM! NO SECUROM! YAY!

Excellent I shall be getting hold of that tonight.

Fingers crossed I'll finally be able to play the game I paid for a month ago today.

Incidentally I assume that I can only use the Maxis content that comes with Spore if I use a crack? Or am i able to still use my legit install of the game WITH the crack to remove securom?

Right now I'd happily settle for playing the d@mn thing with maxis only content, rather than not play at all. Even if it does mean losing my 50+ creations.

thanks

I'm using the copy of the game I bought.

Connecting to servers and all, no problems.

Matter of fact, I think that things are still downloading to my game.

I actually would like to point out that the game starts up MUCH faster and logs into the servers MUCH faster now that SecuROM isn't on my computer.

If I can get permission from a SpoerMaster, I'll post a link to this "no-cd crack" for the 1.01 version of the game so that people may play without SecuROM

From my pov I don't care if you want to verify I'm a licensed user.
I do however strongly object to your trashing my registry and OS files by the use of NULL/Invalid data.
And whatever happened to me today was inexcusable.
An instruction from a registered EA address instructed EADM to request my OS to trash the .exe headers of both my antivirus and registry watchdog executables.
45 minutes after this was prevented another request attempted to revoke my admin privileges.
Upon inspection the only program that had attempted to establish superior credentials was SecuROM.
So don't even try to justify this piece of crap with me.

That's excellent!! I did wonder if you could just get the crack and that's all. Fingers crossed I'll be playing this within 30 mins of getting home then.
