I was thinking about Dune as well when I first reached the civilization stage and was told to harvest 'spice'. That was all good until I reached the space stage. Where did yellow, blue, green, pink, and purple spice come from? It's ironic that red spice is worth the least, since that's as close as it gets to the 'real' spice as far as I'm concerned as a Dune fan.

Heh, I loved Dune, but I wish the "uses" as explained in the trade window were not so silly.

Too bad there arent any real deseart worlds that lack large trees and have flowing sand dunes along with sand storms etc etc

As soon as I read that Spice was going to be the main commodity I said to myself "oy, Dune much?" Too bad there isn't a race as good looking Kyle MacLachlan.

I must not fear the Grox.
Fear of the Grox is the mind-killer.
Fear of the Grox is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear of the Grox.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when the Grox have gone past I will turn the inner eye to see their path.
Where the Grox have gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.

In all seriousness, spices (and salt) were a major commodity in the early days of human trading and comes in a variety of types so maybe that's where the excuse comes from?

Hydrocarbons like oil and gas while obvious actually only form on planets with active plate techtonics (rarer than you'd think) AND a carbon based ecology (even rarer), oil might be practically unique to Earth due to that, while more variable commodities like metals, rare metals, optics etc are more confusing to handle and less kiddy-friendly and requires specialised factories... which quite frankly would've given colonies a lot more depth sop I don't know why they didn't roll with that option ¬_¬

Edit: Of course, they could just let you specialise a colony, or factories to manufacture specific items like anti matter missiles or terraforming tools and also allow you to trade them to other races, ban selling stuff to yourself. Throw spice in the bin and suddenly colonies have got both purpose, functionality and a more realistic economic model than "sell spice to yoursefl"

Dune 7?

Yes the creature to tribal video is a very good 2001 parody. Laughed good then he ended up getting the branch in his head and was knocked out.

Hehe that gave me a laugh. Nice one.

It is by will alone I set my mind in motion. It is by the juice of Tea leaf that thoughts acquire speed, the lips acquire stains. The stains become a warning. Never. Ever. Touch my teacup. It is by will alone I set my mind in motion. My mind in motion I boot Spore and create. Let the creations be determined. My calculations perfect. My mind in is motion.

Awww. Man my avatar was removed. Pewp.

It does lend itself to Dune. Just watery seas instead of dangerous sand wastes. No worms but Epics prowl. Lot of analogies.

The entire Grox plot actually reminds me of Benford's Galactic Center cycle, with old mechanical race occupying center's surroundings and bent on wiping all life forms n the galaxy.

The spice must flow!
Pity it needs to be collected by hand on my lousy ornithopter... I would gladly let The Combine Honnete Ober Advancer Mercantiles take care of that... Guess my Space Guild is not prescient enough?

Ok 2001 for the tribal bit. The cross between mission to the moon and flash gordon for the rocket launch.

The born free moment when the herd moves it's nest.
The beast that is very like the Clash Of The titans Kraken in the water and scaring the fish.
There are a lot more. I'm forgetting.
