Not to be too picky, but birds see into infrared. Google for pictures. There is a reason that parrots ALWAYS bite you on an artery. They can see them.

I do think he means less "vision" (albeit what he said...), and more the type of infrared sensing that pit vipers are capable of. If they are blinded, they can still hit you, due to the sensory capability of the pits.
