I don't get it.... thinking on this subject last night. They can make shiny creatures so why can't they make a shiny ship. Also the direction of the ship is the same as the direction of a creature right? They have to know the front and back of a creature so why can't they know that on a ship? I wouldn't even want a creature that looks like the ship you recieved.

Wife's reaction to this was -- you paid how much for that piece of dren? You must be crazy! Are you getting senile?

LOL

Reminded me that this is a bit like the sixties when kids would order something that looked really neat on the side of a cereal box in a large picture with bright colors. What you got was a little thing that didn't look nearly as good in real life, was cheap, lasted a few days and then got tossed.

I wrote the review of the creature creator on Replicator about the Spore Creature Creator. A few comments on this thread:

1. The dusty look is inescapable and an unfortunate by product of this technology. It doesn't use a laser as one person mentioned, but rather squirts a mixture of ink and glue onto a bed of powder. Some of this white powder sticks giving it that characteristic look. To see a step-by-step account of the process see this post http://replicatorinc.com/blog/2009/01/3d-printing-step-by-step/. It is a factory that produces the WarCraft figurines, but they use the same underlying ZCorp technology.

2. It is unfortunate that two companies who pride themselves on ease of use made it so had to preview designs and avoid simple problems like this. I bet if you designed your ship in "Blast Off" mode where it was pointing upwards it would have come out much better. The way to get better resolution is to make your design larger relative to the envelope they allow, however they don't let designs cantilever too much over the edge of the disk otherwise it might break in shipment. Figureprints (The WOW guys) warn about this. My figure was as tall as it was wide so it came out bigger and the resolution looked better by comparison. I've been using 3D printers for a while so I knew the limitations. If EA and ZCorp hope to make this a mainstream business I hope they better educate potential customers.

Best of luck on a refund and if they let you reprint it in a different orientation I'd love to cover it on my blog http://www.replicatorinc.com

Best,

Joseph

...and a Grox ship and a Grox City Hall...great, the Grox could take over my bedroom.

$75 a pop for the slightly-low-quality things seems excessive, however.

Sigh...tired of Spore, moving on to BF2142 and TF2. I might come back later, maybe not.

I just got mine in the mail today, and it looks amazing. I guess it just depends on the creation, relative to the sculpture.
