I can't seem to get the new widget to display properly in IE, Firefox or Chrome (I know you don't support Chrome).

In IE, it shows up blank. In Firefox and Chrome, all the text is jumbled and doubled.

I just logged into my Spore page and the widget seems to be working now.

Impressive work! However, my comments no longer refresh automatically. I have to arrow across to approve them.

Just started developing it, but basically a Sporenament is a Spore Tournament.

When you start the app, it will get 16 random creations and put them into a tournament grid. You will then pick the winner of each matchup so that you end up with one winner at the end

After I get that part working, I want to create my own webservice so that the winner of your spornament will be eliblie to compete in a Level 2 Sporenament where the competition will be between 8 Level 1 winners.. Once there are at least 4 level 2 winners, you will be able to put the winners into a Level 3 Sporenament.

You will be awarded points for completing Spornaments. Maybe 8 Level 1 Spornaments will allow you to pick a level 2 spornament winner. 4 Level 2 Sporenament winners will allow you to pick a Level 3 winner.

The winners (the creations themselves) of each level will be awarded badges (Level 1 Winner, Level 2 Winner), etc, and maybe the owners of those creations will be be able to pick a winner of a higher level tournament.

Eventually, you will be able to choose the types of the competition (for example, Only Spaceships... Right now I can't do this b/c the REST service does not allow me to specify the asset type returned)

Feel free to share any ideas of your own. This is a work in progress where I wanted to learn how to use an existing REST service and to create my own services.

Hey Snobau,

This app looks like it's going to be great! Just FYI - the REST feeds now include the type and the subtype of the asset. Check out this feed for an example: http://www.spore.com/rest/assets/search/FEATURED/0/10
The type is just text, but the subtype is a number, corresponding to the list that MaxisDangerousYams posted about here.

Any questions while you're making your app, don't hesitate to ask.

MaxisEditorDan:

Can I filter my random list by subtype / type? and do you have an ETA on the fix for RANDOM returning 20 results when requesting a smaller number.

Edit: I see the feed also has a rating element. How does that work, (ie, what goes into that rating) and can I [now, or if you have an ETA] filter by that as well? It would be great to say, I would like to Sporenament all factories who have a rating over X.

KUDOS, posting here, just to point out that I'm getting the no-refresh comments Dizdo pointed-out, but comes from a couple days sooner. When the sporecast-add-overlapping (now fixed) begun to occur.

(edit) about Snobau's post... sorting, yes, please...

Hey Snobau,

In terms of filtering, we provide the raw data, it's up to your app to filter it. So what you can do is request whatever feed you want, and then parse through the returned XML and do your own filtering at that point (ie. don't use any creations with rating < X, or only accept UFO's, etc). If you run out of assets then you can always request more until you've filled your needs. The strategy I used for the "Buddy Activity" app is to get a list of your buddies, and then get the most recent 5 assets (/0/5) for each of those buddies. Then I use the creation date inside the asset XML to sort all those creations. If you need help with any of these steps don't hesitate to post and we can help you out.

I'm pretty sure the random feed will be fixed soon.
