is securROM good thing? not good, but as bad as the uninformed believe.

here is a place to get you started at leaning what it is and does:

Love listening to this...
SecuROM is a malware...causes programs to stop working, is installed without permission from the gamer...especially because it is NOT mentioned in the EULA or any downloading screens (ie: Nothing pops up saying "We are going to install SecuROM on your computer. Is this OK?")

Do some research yourself. California law states that you muct inform the consumer of EVERYTHING you're installing onto their computer.

so in california, does the game have to tell you every single file it is installing aswell. its part of the dvd. It says in the eula that it contains a form of copy protection software. I mean if you have to state everything its installing on your computer you'll have a very big list of files and explanation to those files.

i've had securom on my system for years, no malware type problems here, no slowdown, no programs not working

I was generally stating it. If you'd like I can go through and find it on the internet.

In any case, this isn't protecting the game. Nowadays, if I play SPORE, then close it AND the EADM, I can't open any other games (ones NOT made by EA) without restarting my computer.

#1 yes i would like to see it.

and to those who say that sucureROM is just making crap up on their site...

sue them, because that would be false advertising. not spore and its rumor mill. so many people complain becasue spore is not the game they saw in 2005, but that was not advertising, it is conceptual work. so not false advert. but if ANYONE can PROVE that secureROM is doing all the evil they say (but in truth just hear people make up[, and assume on forums). then there is a lawsuit right there,

secureROM says what it does, and if does something different, there is a case.

I think the real rub is more along the lines of the number of installs and the fact that minor changes for some reason can use up another install, even if they are not supposed to. Having to call EA and work through the mess that they call customer service to play a game you legally paid for is pathetic. I don't normally see anyone defending the mailware, do you happen to work for the company or something?

Maybe you missed this thread
http://forum.spore.com/jforum/posts/list/6800.page

I don't have nor ever had issues with this hidden application. However, that's not to say others haven't had issues for whatever reason. The install limit is just taking it wayyyyy to far because I am sure if you hit it for what ever reason and had to go though what the guy above did you yourself would be pretty pissed off. I don't think at that point you would be on the site posting how great secureROM is now would you?

So do me a favor, just because you are the uber god like person, and your pc never has any problems with the application, don't assume everyone is in the same boat.

I think the main issue with Securom is the 3/5 install limit. I buy a game and expect to use/install it on one computer at a time for all accounts on that computer (only one can play obviously at any time). However there are lots of rumors flying around which are not substantiated or true both about securom and other issues and I can see people trying to correct them without being part of any grand conspiracy.

I don't normally see anyone defending the mailware, do you happen to work for the company or something

Is typically the resort of someone who doesn't like to admit they may have been wrong. Lets see how the courts find to determine the legal situation and progress from there in regards to if it can be classified as malware. Until that time lets pressure EA to produce a system that works for everyone who simply wants to play games they have paid for.

It won't come to that because EA will do everything they can to settle out of court just so the decision will never be made. Just wait and see.

I disagree with that. EA is in a no win situation on this one.

IF they settle EA would open themselves up to not just a few lawsuits, but many. The flood gates would be open, EA cannot settle unless the settlement is a good one such as offering refunds for those that don't want to keep the Disney game anymore. The flip side of course is losing in court. If that happens they will appeal and the process will go on for a long time.

I have two installs sucked up by nothingness, and if I change one part of my computer the third one goes away and I am screwed.

I am NOT PAYING to CALL THEM to fix it. That means, when I hit that limit, Spore is a coaster for my glasses of lemonade.

Once you un-install it, your supposed to get an that install added back onto your limit, right? That's what I had heard originally. So if you are upgrading your computer, uninstall spore. When you're done, reinstall it. It's most likely a pain in the a.. but at least you have more installs.

The last we heard, they're still trying to figure out how to get that to work. As of right now, no, that does not add an install back to your limit.

You guys think Securom is bad? You haven't read this then:

http://kotaku.com/5070957/backtalk-in-eas-forums-get-banned-from-your-games

Remember that incident on the forums a month ago with MySporePage being kicked out of being a moderator for threatening to ban people and thus making their game inaccessible? Remember how Maxis and SporeMasters rushed here to tell us he was wrong and that it was safe to discuss? Read the article. MySporePage was actually telling the truth. For saying something EA/Maxis doesn't like in Spore, you can get banned from Red Alert 3 and vice versa is also true. If you're banned in Red Alert 3, you can't play Spore either. Things are linked and forum actions carry over to the games in which you've purchased, despite what has been said in the past. In short, we've been lied to.

For those who don't remember the incident from a month ago, here's some background:

Just for future reference... A thread from SporemasterNumerator pointing to the SecuROM FAQ and uninstall information http://forum.spore.com/jforum/posts/list/10677.page as I thought it may be relevant.

This program has bunged up mine and my daughter's computer to the point that we had to call customer service TWICE! Long Distance, on a cell phone...

They somehow "fixed" it by changing something on THEIR end. Now my daughter is getting a new computer but our installations are used up, so I can sit on the phone with customer service yet again and try to prove to them that I am the one that purchased MY game.

Eekwotsthat wrote:Everyone now apparantly has 5 installs.. Can't remember where the thread was..

Not true, if you purchased one of the first copies (which I did, Galactic edition at that...$80) you don't get 5 installs, you get 3. Also, if you buy it now, instead of when it was first released, not only do you get your FIVE installs, but you get Creepy and Cute absolutely FREE!

It doesn't add it back. You have to call Customer service.
