I think I have worked out what spice is for!

"There are several different kinds of spice in the known galaxy; they are all grouped under the spice rubric not because of any chemical derivations, but rather because they "spice up" the user in some fashion, either temporarily boosting physical strength and stamina, making the user feel invincible, or heightening awareness or creating euphoria. These "spiced" up abilities do not last long and the user eventually needs another dose of the substance and quickly becomes addicted."

That is a quote from Wikipedia. Spice is a substance from the Star Wars Universe!

Here's the link for the page- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glitterstim_spice#Glitterstim

Cheers.

Don't anyone know Dune anymore?

In this book "Dune" by Frank Herbert (more than 10 years older than Star Wars) spice is a substance that is harvested with mining equipment from below the ground. Spice is needed for space travel, because the navigators (mutated humans) need the spice to use psychic powers to fold the space, and move ships.

So here it's kind of a drug too, but it's also an equivalent for fuel.

It's not fuel, melange (or spice as it is known colloquially) in the duniverse "is the most essential and valuable commodity in the universe, melange is a geriatric drug that gives the user a longer lifespan, greater vitality, and heightened awareness; it can also unlock prescience in some subjects, depending upon the dosage and the consumer's physiology. This prescience-enhancing property makes safe and accurate interstellar travel possible. Melange comes with a steep price, however: it is addictive, and withdrawal is a fatal process."

Prescience is the ability to look into the future.

You fail comprehension of melange.

Dune FTW !! Yep I agree that Spore Spice is probably a "throw back" to the dune spice. However, you'll notice that spice is actually useless outside of currency in Spore. This seems kind of shallow, but they couldnt make a game that makes the player deal drugs if the game is rated E. So we are left with the equivalent of money trees. Money (spice) grows out of the ground, is used for currency since there's no other use for it in Spore and the wierd thing is that it is limitless. Unlike our natural resources on Earth, spice never runs out.

And I think the worms were awesome. People could even ride them.

Each spice has an in-game description of it's use, and it appears to be all about cooking. The Dune reference is obvious, but spice in the spore game is not used as fuel. The star wars reference is a little more apt I suppose, but like I said according to the game it's all about flavoring.

In the in-game descriptions, spice is just used for household and culinary purposes. Why it is a valuable commodity is because of it's tastiness. Spice selling was meant to seem like the Colonial Spice Trading where Europe bought edible spices from Asia and Africa because they made food tasty.

I play Spore just for fun.

Melange wasn't used for fuel. Pilots used it to be able to navigate foldspace - without it, travel was catastrophically hazardous.

Goodbye.
