Here is a list of how to get different archetypes in space and what each empires archetype is from what philosophy they say they follow as well as how to unlock change archetype missions as well as the missions themselves:

Table of Contents:
-Stage Traits
-Space Archetypes
-Alternative Ways
-Philosophies
-Super Powers
-Unlocking Change Archetype Missions
-Change Archetype Missions
-Consequence Abilities
-Backgrounds
-On Knights and Wanderers

Stage Traits:

Cell

Herbivore- Green
Omnivore- Blue
Carnivore- Red

Creature

Social- Green
Adaptable- Blue
Predator- Red

Tribe

Friendly- Green
Industrious- Blue
Aggresive- Red

Civilization

Religious- Green
Economic- Blue
Military- Red

Space Archetypes:

Shaman- 3 Green 1 anything or 4 Green
Trader- 3 Blue 1 anything or 4 Blue
Warrior- 3 Red 1 anything or 4 Red
Zealot- 2 Green 2 Red
Knight- 2 Red 1 Blue 1 Green
Bard- 2 Blues 1 Green 1 Red
Wanderer- Start on space stage
Ecologist- 2 Green 1 Blue 1 Red
Scientist- 2 Blue 2 Red
Diplomat- 2 Green 2 Blue

It does not matter what order you get the colors in just the combination of them (BBGR, BRGB, BBRG, etc. will all be Bards using that combination of colors)

Additional Ways:

These are for if you don't start on cell how to get each archetype-

From Creature:

Shaman- 3 Green Or 1 of each color with Civilization Green
Trader- 3 Blue Or 1 of each color with Civilization Blue
Warrior- 3 Red Or 1 of each color with Civilization Red
Zealot- 2 Green 1 Red Or 1 Green 2 Red
Scientist- 2 Blue 1 Red Or 1 Blue 2 Red
Diplomat- 2 Green 1 Blue Or 1 Green 2 Blue

From Tribe:

Shaman- 2 Green
Trader- 2 Blue
Warrior- 2 Red
Zealot- 1 Green 1 Red
Scientist- 1 Blue 1 Red
Diplomat- 1 Green 1 Blue

From Civilization:

Shaman- Green
Trader- Blue
Warrior- Red

(You can't get Knight, Bard, or Ecologist if you skip Cell)

Philosophies:

Harmony- Shaman
Prosperity- Trader
Force- Warrior
Faith- Zealot
Force- Knight
Chance- Bard
Life- Ecologist
Science- Scientist
Order- Diplomat

(Knights don't actually follow the stones of force but it is given to them as a place holder as there is not set programmed for them)
(You can not find NPC empires that are Wanderers or Knights just your own save files)
(Knights have a different background from Warriors to tell them appart although you cannot do a change archetype mission to become a Knight)

Super Powers:

Shaman- Return Ticket- Returns you to your home planet instantly
Trader- Cash Infusion- Instantly fills trade meter on trade routes
Warrior- Raider Rally- Summons a fleet of pirates to the planet you use it on
Zealot- Fanatical Frenzy- Converts All cities on an empire planet to your empires beliefs *
Knight- Summon Mini-U- Summons a smaller you to help in battles
Bard- Soothing Song- Calms empires to delay attack until it wears off
Ecologist- Safari Vaccum- Collects samples of plants and animals from a planet
Scientist- Gravitational Wave- Destroies all structures on a planet *
Diplomat- Static Cling- Disables all turrets and ships on an empire planet

(Wanderers have no super powers)
(Powers marked with a * break Galactic Code giving you -50 with nearby empires after each use)
(Normally you can only have one power at a time however, if you have the Galactic Adventures expansion pack it is possible to unlock more then one at a time)

Unlocking Change Archetype Missions:

As I've seen people having trouble with this I've decided to add it,

1st: The empire needs to be a different archetype then your own

2nd: It needs to be a level 4 or higher empire, this can be checked when orbiting one of their planets by the number inside the star by their name and is determined by its size;

Level 1: 1-3 systems
Level 2: 4-5 systems
Level 3: 6-8 systems
Level 4: 9-12 systems
Level 5: 12+ systems

It is possible to increase the size and therefore level of an empire by going under the Diplomacy screen and paying them to attack and capture a nearby empires system and can help them win the battle if they aren't on their own, if the only nearby empires are allies you don't want to lose you can also simply uplift an empire by using a monolith on a nearby planet that has creatures tribes or civilizations.

3rd: You MUST be allies with them

4th: Open the communication panel and go to missions and there will be another option below the normal mission for changing to their philosophy

5th: Pay the amount of money they ask for which will be 2.5, 5, or 10 million based on the archetype and then do the mission that follows

Change Archetype Missions:

Shaman- Paint or sculpt 150 on different planets, Cost- 2,500,000
Trader- Sell 5000 items, Cost- 2,500,000
Warrior- Conquer 20 systems, Cost- 2,500,000
Zealot- Create 15 new colonies on different planets, Cost- 5,000,000
Bard- Collect 25 rare objects, Cost- 10,000,000
Ecologist- Fill out 50 ecosystems, Cost- 10,000,000
Scientist- Explore 20 non-planetary systems (Blackholes, Protoplanetary Disks), Cost- 5,000,000
Diplomat- Make 5 new alliences, Cost- 5,000,000

(Taking missions from Wanderer save files will give you Diplomat archetype)
(Missions from Knights will give you Warrior archetype)
(Doing a change archetype mission will make you lose your original super power and get the new one)

(When you change archetypes you will get the ______ Passion achievement for whichever you are switching to if you don't have it already, if you are Omnipotent when you switch however you will not get the _______ Hero Achievement however you can get it by switching before you are Omnipotent and then getting it.)

Consequence Abilities:

Cell:

Green: Social Suave: 20% Discount on social tools
Blue: Gentle Generalist: 20% Discount on standard tools
Red: Power Monger: Increases weapon effectiveness

Creature:

Green: Pleasing Performance: makes colonies happier
Blue: Speed Demon: Makes spaceship faster
Red: Prime Specimen: Increases spaceship health

Tribe:

Green: Gracious Greeting: Increases relation with empires
Blue: Colony Craze: 20% Discount on colony tools
Red: Arms Dealer: 20% Discount on weapons

Civilization:

Green: Green Keeper: Reduces rate of bio disasters on your colonies
Blue: Spice Savant: Increases spice production
Red: Pirate-B-Gones: Reduces rate of pirate raids

(Only the ones that affect the space stage are listed)

Backgrounds:

These are the backgrounds of each philosophy, sorry about the size but it was either small or huge:
Shaman- ...............Trader- ..................Warrior- ................Knight- ...................Zealot- .....................Bard-

Wanderer- ..............Ecologist- ..............Scientist- ..............Diplomat

Grox-

On Knights and Wanderers:
Thanks to Ryuujin for getting definite proof of the fact that you can NOT find NPC Knight or Wanderer empires as I and many others had already suspected.
Ryuujin wrote:

This list are the spawning weights for each archetype and the chances of them having sub-traits (unused) this XML file was pulled from Spore's very own data files (Patch 1.05 edition)

All archetypes have an equal chance of spawning by default (you can edit these) except for Knights and Wanderers, who have no weight entry, therefore it is absolutely impossible to encounter one. Frankly, the proof doesn't get more solid than this

before you suggest I add one, the text is translated for human readability, Spore uses hex values to ID variables,so it's not just a matter of me writing "archetypeKnight 10" because it has no foundation in the actual list of variables used by the engine

Hope this helps some people

You have both Zealot & Diplomat as 2 Green 2 Red.
Do you know what they are meant to be?

You CAN find knights. You can only tell them apart from warriors by the background. They are force.

Well they must be extremely rare as I've never found an NPC Knight empire or read about anyone that has but I know what their background is from my knight file so I'll keep looking

Has anyone else found NPC knight empires? I still can't find any.

Edit so not to confuse anyone and people will stop trying to telling me: You can't find NPC Knights when this was first posted in 08 it was still uncertain but since then has been proved that you can't as is currently stated in the OP.

I have found them several times, the main difference is in that warriors have a 6-sided silver door behind them with silver/chrome background overall, whilst Knights have a purple glow, and the door is more of the top half of an oval, with no real corners, kinda Jedi style, DoYouReadThis has a guide that has screen shots of the background, the easiest way to tell is warrior is more silver and light, while knights have a purple glow that adds a show to the top, like when you shine a flashlight up from below your face.

"What is Harder to Imagine, Space Being Infinite, or a Finite on Space?" I mean Really, a Wall of Bricks? Or a Glass Screen?
Also, Cute & Creepy price down with, well, You-Know-Who, and Tom Riddle isn't anywhere near here...

The order of 'colours' is important, since each phase you finish gives different abilities later on.

For example, Blue Green Blue Red for bard could give better bonuses in space stage then another order.

When i aimed for making the "ultimate" creature, i looked carefully at phase bonuses and picked the best route for me.

Although true the order does not affect the archtype you get only the colours themselves
